At last some sound from my speakers!!!

Thank you very much jcdutton!

I only had to adjust the volume of the Analog Front control from
alsamixer.

Is there a way to make the volume come up on boot or remember the value
set before the last shutdown or be settable by the gnome desktop controls?

Use the alsasound startup script.
It is a standard /etc/init.d script that runs at start up and shutdown.
At shutdown is stores the mixer settings, and start up is restores them.
