I have a hard time parsing this.
More importantly having two modes seems very error prone going down
the route. If the premapping is so important, why don't we do it
always?

I have a hard time parsing this.
More importantly having two modes seems very error prone going down
the route. If the premapping is so important, why don't we do it
always?
