I try aplay and cannot reproduce channel swapping. I think this doesn't
mean that bug is just in speaker-test. When I run speaker-test I interrupt
it with ^C. At this moment driver can be in some state that leads to
swapping channels on next run.
I believe this bugs could be closed. If someone can reproduce "random"
channel swapping in app other then speaker-test there should be separate
bugreport.
About resource exhausting - I post complete logs. Before is just
initializing logs, similar to
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:04:01.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 225
Vortex: init.... <6>done.
Only interrupts and PCI address are differ. If you want more research I
think you should open new bug.
P.S. If you think that I should test another issues with au88x0 cards you
can mail me to lkabanov at mail dot ru.

Raymond - 02-17-06 04:28
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Steps to reproduce the problem with alsa-1.0.11rc3 for au8830 (STAC9708)
1) use alsamixer to turn "Sigmatel Surround Playback Switch" off, it mix
the front and rear channels
numid=19,iface=MIXER,name='Sigmatel Surround Playback Switch'
; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw---,values=1
: values=off
2) aplay -D hw:0,0 out1lq.wav ( you should hear the sound only from left
speaker of out1 at first run )
3) aplay -D hw:0,0 out1lq.wav ( Do the sound come out from left speaker of
out2 with alsa-1.0.11rc3 on second run? )
There may be some difference in MX300, since Win9x can detect one/two
jacks are plugged into out1 and out2 using GPIO

Using the graphic equalizer and the following plugin which route 2 channels
to 4-channels.
pcm.test {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
channels 4
}
ttable.0.0 0.5
ttable.0.1 1.0
ttable.1.2 0.75
ttable.1.3 0.25
}
The left peak is supposed to be always one half of the right peak.
aplay -D test stereo.wav
mplayer -ao alsa:device=test stereo.wav
left peak is 3 times of right peak indicates swap of front/rear channels
It's interesting that random swapping of channels can be reproduced by
speaker-test
speaker-test -D test -c 2 -t sine

> When run speaker-test several times in a row it swaps channels in that
order:

> For reproduce this I just run "speaker-test -t wav -c4 -D hw:0,0" for 3
to 17

This seem to be an odd behaviour of speaker-test -t wav as described in

ponchick,
I have uploaded a diff(alsa-driver-1.0.11rc4) which implement the
"subdevice playback volume" in
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1835 , this allow a true
"front" and
"rear" device for au8830 with 4-channels codec.
The following "front" device can only be used by au8830 with 4-channels
codec.
<confdir:pcm/front.conf>
AU8830.pcm.front.0 {
@args [ CARD ]
@args.CARD {
type string
}
type hooks
slave.pcm {
type hw
card $CARD
device 0
}
hooks.0 {
type ctl_elems
hook_args [
{
interface PCM
device 0
name "Subdevice Playback Volume"
index { @func private_pcm_subdevice }
value [ 0 0 -64 -64 ]
}
]
}
}
Please note that the modified "front" and "rear" device cannot be used
with your another au8830 with stereo codec

ponchick,
I have uploaded a diff(alsa-driver-1.0.11rc4) which implement the
"subdevice playback volume" in
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1835 , this allow a true
"front" and
"rear" device for au8830 with 4-channels codec.
The following "front" device can only be used by au8830 with 4-channels
codec.
<confdir:pcm/front.conf>
AU8830.pcm.front.0 {
@args [ CARD ]
@args.CARD {
type string
}
type hooks
slave.pcm {
type hw
card $CARD
device 0
}
hooks.0 {
type ctl_elems
hook_args [
{
interface PCM
device 0
name "Subdevice Playback Volume"
index { @func private_pcm_subdevice }
value [ 0 0 -64 -64 ]
}
]
}
}
Please note that the modified "front" and "rear" device cannot be used
with your another au8830 with stereo codec

As hook function is called when snd_xxx_pcm_open(), using hook and
subdevice volume control cannot provide a true "front" and "rear" device
since the hardware mixer is allocated at snd_xxx_hw_params() and
snd_pcm_get_channels_max() is still 4 not 2.

I try to describe more cleanly:
1. Front/Rear swaps bug reproduced with any tool that use four channels
including speaker-test, aplay, xine and mplayer.
2. au88x0_surround40.patch fix this issue completly
3. There is another similar issue when channels swap almost randomly
(https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1726#0008085). It's
reproduced by speaker-test but I cannot reproduce
it with at least aplay and mplayer. au88x0_surround40.patch does not
affect the bug at all. If someone can reproduce it with any tool other
than speaker-test I think there should be separate bug report.
4. This bug is fixed and could be closed.

Summary: Front and Rear channels swap after first play when
playing Surround40 on au8830
Description:
The front and rear channels are correct for playing Surround40 only at the
first time after the driver is loaded.
The front and rear channels (Surround40) always swapped afterward using
speaker-test or xine.
Playing stereo sound is OK.
speaker-test -c4 -D hw:0,0
speaker-test 1.0.11rc2
Playback device is hw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 4 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2 to 8192
Period size range from 1 to 512

Raymond - 02-17-06 06:09
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Steps to reproduce the problem with alsa-1.0.11rc3 for au8830 (STAC9708)
Immediately after the driver is loaded.
1) use alsamixer to turn "Sigmatel Surround Playback Switch" off, it mix
the front and rear channels
numid=19,iface=MIXER,name='Sigmatel Surround Playback Switch'
; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw---,values=1
: values=off
2) aplay -D hw:0,0 out1lq.wav ( you should hear the sound only from left
speaker of out1 at first run )
3) aplay -D hw:0,0 out1lq.wav ( Do the sound come out from left speaker of
out2 with alsa-1.0.11rc3 on second/third/... run? )
Repeat the about test with out1rq.wav. out2lq.wav and out2rq.wav (you need
to reload the driver in order to have the sound come out from correct
speaker on step 2)
MX300 Win9x can detect one/two jacks are plugged into out1 and out2 using
GPIO, but other au8830 cannot detect.
The only side effect of the au88x0_surround40.patch is the "vortex: IRQ
fifo error" appear in the system log when play/capture sound which is not
mono.
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1840
The "vortex: IRQ fifo error" only appear once in alsa-1.0.11rc3
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ponchick - 02-26-06 07:22
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to describe more cleanly:
1. Front/Rear swaps bug reproduced with any tool that use four channels
including speaker-test, aplay, xine and mplayer.
2. au88x0_surround40.patch fix this issue completly
3. There is another similar issue when channels swap almost randomly
(https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1726#0008085). It's
reproduced by speaker-test but I cannot reproduce
it with at least aplay and mplayer. au88x0_surround40.patch does not
affect the bug at all. If someone can reproduce it with any tool other
than speaker-test I think there should be separate bug report.
4. This bug is fixed and could be closed.

Before is just
initializing logs, similar to
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:04:01.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 225
Vortex: init.... <6>done.
Only interrupts and PCI address are differ. If you want more research I
think you should open new bug.
P.S. If you think that I should test another issues with au88x0 cards you
can mail me to lkabanov at mail dot ru.

I test this patch with 1.0.11rc3 on my Monster Sound 2. Without patch
channels swaps after first use. Patch fix this issue but there is another
one. When run speaker-test several times in a row it swaps channels in
that order:
Front Left become Front Right
Front Right become Rear Left
Rear Right become Front Left
Rear Left become Rear Right
For reproduce this I just run "speaker-test -t wav -c4 -D hw:0,0" for 3 to
17 times in a row. On next run it restores channel order.

Just use alsa-1.0.11rc3 to test whether the swapping of front/rear occur is
due to bug in driver instead of different hardware revision as your au8830
chip is B0AAAA.
#ifdef CHIP_AU8830
.channels_max = 4,
#else
speaker-test -t wav -D hw:0,0 -c 4
Do your hear the female voice "front left" and "front right" after the
driver is loaded ?
You will need to quit the speaker-test and run it again.
Do you hear the the female voice "rear left" and "rear right" ?

ponchick - 02-16-06 05:37
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I test this patch with 1.0.11rc3 on my Monster Sound 2. Without patch
channels swaps after first use. Patch fix this issue but there is another
one. When run speaker-test several times in a row it swaps channels in
that order:
Front Left become Front Right
Front Right become Rear Left
Rear Right become Front Left
Rear Left become Rear Right
For reproduce this I just run "speaker-test -t wav -c4 -D hw:0,0" for 3 to
17 times in a row. On next run it restores channel order.

I see very little diffrece between peaks. First time front left/right
sounds a little louder (peaks are little higher) then on second run. Rear
channels always sounds almost equally on any run (peaks are same).
At home I have another au8830 on 32-bit UP (no hyperthreading) pentium4
but it little outdated. Today I get up-to-date kernel, alsa-* and this
patch and try to play with it a little.
