Dear Guru

What are the meanings of the statistic fields? For example:

qdisc tbf 8020: rate 256Kbit burst 10Kb lat 190.7ms
 Sent 941500 bytes 11288 pkts (dropped 33, overlimits 0)
 backlog 770b 9p

 qdisc cbq 1: rate 10Mbit (bounded,isolated) prio no-transmit
 Sent 969153 bytes 11632 pkts (dropped 33, overlimits 22419)
 backlog 9p
  borrowed 0 overactions 0 avgidle 624 undertime 0

What "dropped 33" means? Packets I presume.
"Overlimits 22419"? What this mean? Were all these bytes discarded?
Backlog? What is this?

Any1 could point some documentation about statistic fields?

Thanks a lot.

941500 bytes and 11288 were actually sent, and not dropped. 33 packets were
dropped.

> backlog 770b 9p

9 packets are waiting to be allowed to be sent, totalling 770 bytes.

22419 times did cbq throttle itself because it was exceeding its rate.

> backlog 9p
> borrowed 0 overactions 0 avgidle 624 undertime 0

avgidle is described in the manpages on ds9a.nl/lartc/manpages

Hi all,

I'm experimenting with HTB and IMQ and I'm wondering if there exists a
tool to graph the throughput of traffic through my router.
I now I can setup iptables to count packets and read/reset these with a
script , but maybe there is allready something MRTG alike but for
shorter periods of measurements.

Thanks alot,

Try with 'monitor*' at www.docum.org Stef Coene's website about Traffic Control.

See Stef's rrdtool-based tools [1] or if you need something more like
real-time stats, the Java-based stuff [2], or even his perl tools [3].

You might find my snmprtg useful for this, but you will need to be able
to query it using SNMP. It can run on most platforms too. Its still very
young, but quite usable. Currently the Poll Interval, and the number of
minutes to display is hard coded (5 secs, 10 mins respectively), but
should be easily changed.

http://nzgeeks.org/cameron/progs/snmprtg.php

Runs on anything with Perl/Tk and the SNMP module. (Developed on Linux,
tested with Windows NT and ActiveState Perl)

Helle everybody,

I am finishing a computer science degree and I would like to know how you
use qos on Linux.

Please take a few seconds to answer my questions

I would like to know :
 - what type of qdisc you use
 - if it is only for tests or for a "real" use (what use)
 - how much qos box do you use
 - do you use anything else (Cisco, Unix ...)

I don't know if it is better that you answer to me or to the list, so do as
you want. Anyway i will send the result to the list.

Thanks in advance
Emmanuel

Hello, Emmanuel,

Straight to the question:

1. Personally I'm using mostly HTB.
2. Yes, it is in real use - that way I'm controlling traffic in the ISP I'm
working in.
3. I didnt get this question. If you're asking about the HW parameters -
PIII/1Ghz. If you're asking about the quantity of QOS boxen I'm using - 5 of
them, 4 GNU/Linux and one FreeBSD.
4. Yes, I'm using Cisco policers, but not for smth serious. Besides I'm
using FreeBSD altq with CBQ as a shaper (cause that's what it is).

allready 2 answers, thank you
the 3rd question don't seem clear :
 - I am not asking about the HW parameters, but about the quantity of QOS
boxen you are using

thx for the 2 first and please go on
