Dang... I would think it would be incredibly good to "support" UltraSparc
machines... I would certainly have a market for UltraSparc/Linux for my
customers. They need to have a $39 version though :) Most of us with
UltraSparcs don't need 'official support' :-)

I guess you have a choice right now. Either you go for the $0 version
(either install from FTP/HTTP or burn your own CD - these two are the only
options in UltraPenguin you had), or you go for a $40 version, or $80
version (I don't know how much does it cost exactly but think I've read
those two numbers for CD sets without/with installation support).
I really don't think it would make any sense to cp -a redhat-6.0 ultrapenguin-1.2
and with the exception of tape install and maybe two or three little other things
everything what was in ultrapenguin is in redhat, plus redhat 6.0 is based on
glibc-2.1 and many things have changed since rh5.2 ultrapenguin-1.1.9 was
forked from.
Cheers,
Jakub

I meant from a marketing standpoint:
"Red Hat 6.0 runs on UltraSparc!"
I would think that this would be something worth advertising :)

They don't have the $40 version for alpha or sparc yet...

I hope that Ultra Linux will continue, in some form, so that we can finally
get support for some of the sparcs RedHat is not currently supporting in
6.0 (i.e. sun4/330). We may be a minority among all sparc users, but we
are out there.

Is there still going to be Ultrapenguin 1.2 ? Based on RH 6.0 ?
As stated in my email which started this thread, UltraPenguin is dead
now and is of historical interest only. User's will benefit more from
Jakub and myself concentrating on one single distribution instead of
multiple ones.

So the previous issues concerning the memory limitations on the AXmp and AXdp
are resolved in RedHat 6.0? Also has RedHat done any work on peripheral support
for the Ultra line? I do not believe it would be effective to release 6.0
without supporting the newer Sparc Linux peripherals.

Don't worry, I'll be making sure rh6.0 and above runs on 4/300 and when time
permits the other sun4s.

So the previous issues concerning the memory limitations on the
AXmp
There are no memory limitation on AXmp, we support the maximum
configuration of 2GB and 4 processors, I've had it running here
myself.
Also has RedHat done any work on peripheral support for the Ultra
line? I do not believe it would be effective to release 6.0 without
supporting the newer Sparc Linux peripherals.
There is nothing "newer" than what was shipped in RH6.0, up until the
very last moment fixes were constantly being made up to date in the
release, I made sure of this.
I cannot parse what you are saying though, anything which is supported
in _any_ Sparc/Linux kernel available is supported in RH6.0, what
exactly are you particularly after?
Jakub and myself are still the two people doing any of the work, so if
we've added support for the peripheral, the distributions will have it
as well.

Cool. Out of curiosity, how hard would it be to make SILO or any of the
other Sparc loaders work on sun4? My SunOS disk has died, so I can now
only boot via tftp. (Handy trick for other sun4 people - drop the kernel
image in / on a SunOS partition and then you can "b/vmlinux" instead of
messing around with tftp.)
Matthew.

There are other options. CheapBytes is selling Redhat 6.0 Sparc or Alpha CDs
for $4.99 (plus shipping, of course), and there should be other sources to get
'burned' copies of those CDs at similar cost. Try your local Linux user group,
there might be someone with the CDs who's willing to burn them for you, or lend
them to you....

Another option are the Debian sparc and ultrasparc distributions. Check out

Watch Cheap Bytes - www.cheapbytes.com - They have it available
pretty soon, and their prices are "competative." :)
