Yes, please, send me your patch. I hope this patch works for
module-init-tools-0.9.3

I had same problem with pre 2.5.51. With 2.5.51, kernel now boot and I'm
able to get login prompt using ramdisk. Only catch is I've to specify
root=/dev/ram0 instead of /dev/ram for it to boot.

OK, I went thru the process of creating a modified
ASL (diffs from the original attached) for this
laptop.
Basically, I cleaned up the original so that the
errors
from "iasl" went away.

I now have a working AC module.

This is a stopgap measure though, correct?  The goal
should be for the Linux kernel to support the existing
AML in flash (the AML apparently comes from Microsoft)
on these laptops.  The BIOS on these machines is about
as fresh as it gets (Nov, 2002).  It seems to me that
the Intel ASL compiler and interpreter needs to be
changed/relaxed to accomodate what has become a
defacto
(de-gates-o) standard here.

As a practical matter, I can't imagine non-programmer
types having to modify their ASL code to make Linux
work on their laptops, and I can't imagine that Ducrot
wants to be the single, worldwide point, for modified
ASL code.

Would the ACPI developers be receptive if I made the
changes necessary to allow the kernel ACPI code to
accept the existing AML in my laptop as-is?

its only once in log - then the software raid made
that disk fail and removed from the array:
Nov 28 17:54:24 fileserver kernel: raid5: Disk failure on hdn1, disabling
device. Operation continuing on 8 devices
I don't want anymore disabled drive, that is good.

Hi all.

Let me begin by saying I'm quite new to kernel hacking, and will freely
admit that I've lots still to learn. Please, therefore, cut me some slack if
I show previously unsurpassed ignorance!

First, some background:

I've done some work on the suspend-to-disk code in the 2.4 series kernels.
The mainstream suspend-to-disk code in 2.4 essentially eats all the memory
it can, makes a copy of the remainder, and writes that copy to disk. I
prepared a version that eats far less memory and writes a bigger image,
thereby resulting in a more responsive system on resume (although it takes
longer to read). The target, of course is to eat [virtually] no memory at
all and store as close to a perfect image as possible. To get closer to
that, I implemented a crude reverse mapping (assuming I understand the term
correctly) which makes a bitmap of pages ('pageset 1') that are only used by
processes which have been stopped (ie processes not needed for writing the
image), writes the contents of those pages to disk and then copies and saves
the remaining pages ('pageset 2') using pageset1 pages and free memory. It
works well, and will probably work better once I put it in a kernel where
drivers are properly quiesced!

Which brings me to my question. I want to start trying to get this going in
a 2.5 kernel, and have seen people talking about reverse-mapping patches for
a while now. I'm wondering if you have managed or are preparing to merge
such patches into the 2.5 series, whether they would be helpful to me in
identifying those pageset1 pages. If so, how I use them.

Of course you might want to bag the whole method in general :> I'll happily
try to implement a better method if you suggestion one!

No it is not in 2.4 nor 2.4-ac.

I doubt it will be back-ported but who knows.  Linus and Jens would know

So the urban legend goes that gcc-3.2 compiled kernels may infact
produce mildly incorrect results in the networking code.

I have yet to verify this, and JDA seems to indicate that he has working
kernels with gcc-3.2. While I've only recently tested gcc-3.0.x and
gcc-3.1.x based compiles.

Yeap. The idea of check_var is to validate a mode. Note modedb uses just
check_var. It is okay to READ the values in your par. You shouldn't alter
the values in par.

Correct. Check_var is always called. Now if you wanted to just test a mode
via userland with the FB_ACTIVATE_TEST flag then only fb_check_var is
called. If you pass in FB_ACTIVATE_NOW then both fb_check_var and
fb_set_par will be called. Fb_set_par actually sets the hardware state.

Actually you can look at info->var. Info->var has been validated so it can
be trusted. You don't need to stuff everything into par. You DO need to
change info->fix if the hardware state has changed.

    Depends on what you want to do.  Are you look to do something with
mostly reads and few writes, an even mix, or mostly writes?  For speed, you
can't beat MySQL so if you are going to be doing mostly reads (like a web
site), it works great.  For an application with a fair bit of writes, I
would go with Postgres just because it has some more advances features and
tends to scale better.  I know that Postgres just released a new version 7.3
(http://www.us.postgresql.org/) recently that is supposed to be pretty
slick.  MySQL has also fully integrated the InnoDB code which adds truly
ACID compliant transactions to MySQL as well as some other features.  They
are getting pretty close in features, but I would still seperate them by
speed and scalability.  I don't have a great deal of experience with either,
but at my last job we used MySQL to run our entire web site (a newspaper)
and never had any problems with it, even without the new feature set.  It
was mostly reads though, but very fast.  I put a couple of links in below.
First one is a comparison chart from a year ago.  Probably changed a little
bit, but will give you a good idea.  Second one is a Slashdot discussion on
the topic, see what others had to say.  Last is the link to MySQL's site for
the new 4.0 version and descriptions of the new features in the different
flavors.

Some say that if it's just a small scale database
then MySQL is the way to go but if you're planning
to put up a large database then postgreSQL is the answer.

Davide,

I really cannot think of a good reason why eventpoll_init() should print
a pointer value to user-space - especially the value of current?

I do not think this is good practice and someone might even consider it
a security hole.  Personally, I would prefer to remove the "successfully
initialized" message altogether, but at the very least can we not print
current's address?

James, I appreciate all your hard work.  I hope my bug report
isn't too upsetting for you.  I think you are making great progress.
It is also a shame that so much of the driver porting has fallen
on your shoulders.  If I were a programmer.  I'd help, but my skills
are in software testing, for the most part.
