I don't want to merge too much, but I did merge net-2.6 into
net-next-2.6 periodically.

Basically my main impetus to merge is when I know or sense that merge
conflicts are building up.

I would recommend that people work on the tree that is appropriate
for the work they are doing. And outside of a merge window that
means net-2.6 for a bug fix and net-next-2.6 for new work (or bug
fixes to new work).

Inside of the merge window, like we are now, will have everything
going into net-2.6

	Actually, I did, which was why I thought my succinct sequence
was sufficient. Here's what I meant to convey, in words: use the
millennium as the major version number, the year-of-millennium as the
minor version number, and (by implication) the usual release and
stable suffixes.

	This sequence had not been proposed yet in the thread, perhaps
for some reason like it's a stupid idea, since it will soon violate the
largish meaningless number rule in the year-of-millennium.

	In case you think I'm mistaken in my assertation that it
hasn't been proposed before in the thread, the rest of this message
summarizes the pertinent posts in the thread:

In <alpine.LFD.1.10.0807141914280.3017@woody.linux-foundation.org>,
Linus Torvalds proposed two possible new patterns:

yyyy.month
decade.year.release

In <alpine.LFD.1.10.0807141939410.3017@woody.linux-foundation.org>,
Linus Torvalds proposed this pattern:

2.8.release in 2008, 2.9.release in 2009, 3.0.release in 2010

Linux also expressed a dislike for large, meaningless numbers.

In <alpine.DEB.1.10.0807142048260.6370@asgard>, David Lang expressed a
preference for yyyy.release, and expressed a dislike for yyyy.month on
two grounds: 1) it's hard to predict the release month, so how should
the -rc's be named, and 2) some people don't understand that 8.10
comes after 8.9. He then proposed:

yyyy.r.s (r=release, s=stable, as at present)

In <20080715053101.GJ1369@1wt.eu>, Willy Tarreau proposed:
y.r.s (y = yyyy - 2000), e.g. use 9.r.s in 2009, 10.r.s in 2010

In <487C4646.7020905@gmail.com>, Rafael C. de Almeida seconded 8.x,
9.x, 10.x, and commented that neither Linux nor any of us would live
long enough to worry about 101.x. [I eschew such pessimism. :-)]

There were some comments that didn't propose alternative sequences
(which I may skip mentioning from here on), then in
<87skubxxtq.fsf@basil.nowhere.org> Andi Kleen proposed using a single
number like Solaris.

In <20080715133801.546338c1@the-village.bc.nu>, Alan Cox commented
that 2008 is specific to a particular Western calendar (which leads to
amusing trains of thought about Linux having different version numbers
in countries that have different calendars. Version number locale,
anyone?). He proposed Unix epoch time: 38.x

In <1216125715.10312.4.camel@localhost>, Kasper Sandberg said he likes
the current system, with the major number changing when something
important happens. [He didn't define "important".]

In <200807151518.59338.info@gnebu.es>, Kasper Sandberg proposed
avoiding largish numbers for a while by going to 3.0 in 2009, then
incrementing releases by a tenth, with the stable version coming after
that:

3.1.x, 3.2,x, ... 3.9.x, 4.0.x

In <20080715163652.GA12728@lgserv3.stud.cs.uit.no>, Tobias Brox proposed:

YYYY.r#.s# (meaning that the letter "r" would preceed the relese number, and
the letter "s" would preceed the stable number)

In <487CE70B.9070506@greyfade.us>, Charles grey wolf Banas proposed
using a Linux epoch decade as the first number, with the minor number
being the year in that decade. I think this is the same as the y.r.s
proposal, except maybe off by one, given that Linux was first released
in 1991 and not 1990.

In <487D7781.6000407@keyaccess.nl>, Rene Herman proposed [somewhat
arbitrary] transition to 2.8 and 2.9, and specified that 3.0 should be
until when world domination by Linux is near.

There were discussions about feature-based numbering. In
<alpine.LNX.1.10.0807160951000.26724@fbirervta.pbzchgretzou.qr>,
Adrian Bunk suggested that the major number should jump whenever there
was a big flag day.

In <alpine.LNX.1.10.0807171920010.12734@fbirervta.pbzchgretzou.qr>,
Jan Engelhardt proposed the rule that the minor version number should
be incremented every 6 to 8 releases, within the current scheme.

In <20080717195625.GC6777@isi.edu>, Craig Milo Rogers proposed using
the millenium as the major version and the year-of-millennium as the
minor version, with the implcation that they would be followed by the
usual release and stable numbers. The main disadvantage of this
proposal, as I see it, is it will suffer the "largish meaningless
number" problem in another decade or two.

In <487FC213.9030604@altrux.me.uk>, Alastair Stevens proposed dropping
the ".6" and proceeding with a three-level numbering scheme:

2.6.26.s, 2.27.s, 2.28.s, ...

In <200807180823.m6I8NIo27365@inv.it.uc3m.es>, Peter T. Breuer
proposed switching to a three-level numbering scheme and resetting the
middle number when useful [which I suppose might mean a major feature
change or just a desire to avoid largish meaningless numbers]. I
assume this sould give a sequence like:

2.6.26.s, 2.8.s, 2.9.s, 2.10.s,

I'm not sure about this comment, being not very sure about the semantics
of late_initcall but shouldn't late_initcall (level 7) wait for 6s to
have completed?

A little btw. question: I know you are busy now with more serious
problems and it's not for now, but: after the last net-next-2.6 git
policy change most of the time neither net-2.6 nor net-next-2.6
could be treated as current net state. I tried to stick to net-next,
but it was idle most of the time.

Isn't it possible to create the third git tree maintained the old
net-next way i.e. net-next-2.6 with immediate bug fixes from net-2.6
(and of course rebased from time to time)? I guess you could be doing
something like this privately, so it's not necessarily a lot of
additional hassle?

Thanks,
Jarek P.

The old code will copy 4 extra bytes totally on some platforms, the new code
is correct. The old one queue like this:
struct ...(excluding the padding bytes)|4 padding bytes|4 padding bytes|data

Disabling vmexits on external interrupts will certainly lock up your
host. As soon as the guest pages in enough memory to run a loop waiting
for an interrupt, nothing will cause it to come out.

I have a truly marvellous patch that fixes the bug which this

By "Drm itself" I assume you are referring to libdrm.

IIRC it is just waiting for browsers to add cacert.org to trusted root
certificates, it should be fine to accept.

These look funny. Did you build your kernel from the same source tree
the DRM is using (/lib/modules/2.6.26/source)?
I haven't seen these errors before, but my first guess would be an
unconfigured or never-compiled kernel source tree. Hmm, yes, at least
include/linux/bounds.h is a build-time generated file.

If you are using a precompiled kernel image from your favourite
distribution, you might need to install also another package which allows
building custom kernel modules. This is distro specific.

Hello,

$ grep nfs /etc/fstab
flyhigh:/home/mako/linux/lkt    /home/mako/linux/lkt    nfs     noauto,rw,user  0 0

$ mount lkt
$ mount | grep lkt
flyhigh:/home/mako/linux/lkt on /home/mako/linux/lkt type nfs (rw,user=mako,addr=192.168.1.3)

$ cd lkt/
-bash: cd: lkt/: Permission denied

# cd lkt/
bash: cd: lkt/: Permission denied

$ ls -al | grep lkt
drwxr-xr-x  6 mako mako     4096 Jun 29 10:40 lkt

This nfs share works perfectly fine with earlier kernels.
Do you want me to bisect or is this a known issue?

Pulled and pushed back out to net-2.6, thanks!

Hello,

$ grep nfs /etc/fstab
flyhigh:/home/mako/linux/lkt    /home/mako/linux/lkt    nfs     noauto,rw,user  0 0

$ mount lkt
$ mount | grep lkt
flyhigh:/home/mako/linux/lkt on /home/mako/linux/lkt type nfs (rw,user=mako,addr=192.168.1.3)

$ cd lkt/
-bash: cd: lkt/: Permission denied

# cd lkt/
bash: cd: lkt/: Permission denied

$ ls -al | grep lkt
drwxr-xr-x  6 mako mako     4096 Jun 29 10:40 lkt

This nfs share works perfectly fine with earlier kernels.
Do you want me to bisect or is this a known issue?

	Mariusz

* [PATCH] firewire:queue the right number of data
From: JiSheng Zhang @ 2008-07-19 7:35 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: stefanr; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi,

There will be 4 padding bytes in struct fw_cdev_event_response on some platforms
The member:__u32 data will point to these padding bytes. While queue the
response and data in complete_transaction in fw-cdev.c, it will queue like this:
|response(excluding padding bytes)|4 padding bytes|4 padding bytes|data.
It queue 4 extra bytes. That is to say it use "&response + sizeof(response)"
while other place of kernel and userspace library use "&response + offsetof
(typeof(response), data)". So it will lost the last 4 bytes of data.This patch
can fix it while not changing the struct definition.

Sorry for open a new ticket.

kvm allows writing into the bios; qemu does not. I thought it was a kvm
bug, but turns out that it's a qemu bug...

(though to be fair, true emulation ought to start out read-only, then be
enabled by the bios ram shadow mechanism)

Hmm, those were spurious RTOs indeed or a sign of perverted TCP "proxy"
(or whatever they call them), longest delay spike I've found so far is
this:

11:27:28.454827 172.16.1.131.56060 > 80.152.31.131.25: . 3989187:3990587(1400)
...
11:28:00.188835 80.152.31.131.25 > 172.16.1.131.56060: . ack 3990587 win 65535

That's 32 seconds? :-D What should TCP do with that :-) ...disregard that
measurement because some other TCP variant would not be able to use the
same measurement due to ambiguity problem(?), I don't think so... It seems
that non-FRTO TCP just misses those signs and acts _too_ aggressively ;-),
which is well known to happen when spurious RTO occurs.

...Also, those duplicate ACKs I pointed out earlier are a sign of
unnecessary retransmissions (they occur both with and without FRTO).
I actually doubt you have any real losses there, I'll probably next
calculate RTTs based on that assumption in the non-FRTO dump too...

* More ethernet port same ip address
From: Michele Petrazzo - Unipex srl @ 2008-07-19 7:34 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netfilter

Hi all,
this is a very strange ask (I don't find any other on the net)...

I need to setup a linux box with more than one ethernet ports and every
one must have the same ip address. I, of course :), already tried to do it
with a lot of solutions that linux offer (iptables+mark+ip route, bonding,
a vlan every port), but with the same result... Packet come into
the right port but go out through the "last" that I have set, so it will
never arrive.
An iptables rule that are something like (-t mangle -A OUTPUT -j LOG) says:

IN= OUT=eth2 SRC=172.16.0.1 DST=172.16.0.10 LEN=84 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00
TTL=64 ID=19468 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=0 CODE=0 ID=41003 SEQ=902
IN= OUT=eth2 SRC=172.16.0.1 DST=172.16.0.3 LEN=60 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00
TTL=64 ID=8117 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=0 CODE=0 ID=512 SEQ=37888
IN= OUT=lo SRC=172.16.0.1 DST=172.16.0.1 LEN=88 TOS=0x00 PREC=0xC0
TTL=64 ID=8112 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=3 CODE=1 [SRC=172.16.0.1 DST=172.16.0.3
LEN=60 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=8117 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=0 CODE=0 ID=512
SEQ=37888 ]

Here the server have the two ports with 172.16.0.1 and two clients,
connected into the two others has 172.16.0.3 and 172.16.0.10

It's there a solution for achieve this?

Thanks,
Michele

Instead I changed the code to use the host's anon_inodes when
available. I also introduced a couple of bugs but the list fixed these
quickly.  Thanks list!

Sure. It should have been there already :(

Please change this to store the buffer in vcpu->arch.something, and free
it on vcpu destruction. If this path is called at all, it is called
very often, so it's fine to "waste" those 512 bytes.

Might even allocate it as a field in vcpu->arch, since it's only 512 bytes.

Please keep the code inlined in kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl(), as this is a
-stable candidate and I want to keep the patch obvious. A later patch
can break it up.

Please separate the vm ioctl, vcpu ioctl, and pv_mmu_op thing into
separate patches, for bisect goodness.
