Hi,

how about to gather the bugs of the current driver and list them as
known bugs on the web?
it would be nice to see such things on alsa or wiki's card page,
so that users can know that you are not alone :)

known bugs i know of (and am working on) are:

OSS emulation
- Wine OSS (mmap) is not working. (A workaround already known.)

nm256
- driver often hangs up at boot time.

intel8x0
- driver hangs up at "alsactl restore" on SMP (ICH4 only?)
- master/master mono mixer elements disappear sometime on ICH4.
- no 2nd/3rd codec support.

powermac
- playback is not audible on screamer until mic-boost is touched.

opl3sa2
- on (some?) notebooks, pcm is not audible until pcm mixer is
  touched.

cmi8330
- is broken.

trident
- pcm is not audible on some SIS7012 notebooks.

ice1712
- frontbox of TerraTec DMX 6-Fire not working.

via8233
- (possible) noises. (VIA8233A only?)

usb-audio
- ambiguous control names on some devices.

emu10k1
- MIDI on SB live drive not working properly.
- wavetable drops notes sometimes. (a good test example wanted.)

if you know more bugs, which is reproducable, please let me know.

Takashi

I have an idea for how to do this nicely. We can have a seperate page
and also embed them into the alsa-docs. I will get back to you.

the problem is basically on wine, so the "right" way to fix wine.
but the short way is to apply the following patch.

wine tries to mmap with the 8bit mode first, and gives up the whole
sound when it doesn't work.
alsa oss emulation accepts 8bit mode as long as it's accessed via
read/write, because plugin can handle it. but, mmap cannot. so the
application can be confused.

the attached patch has an obvious drawback, that application can run
mmap even with the wrong parameter.

hmm, i got:

Fatal error: Failed opening required '../../components/head.php3' in /home/alsa/www/alsa-doc/index.php3 on line 2

> PHP is sooo kewl.

that's true :)

ok, the new additions to buglets:

from Jack Howarth

powermac
  - alsaplayer crashes with a message (on rc2)
	alsaplayer: pcm.c:5692: snd_pcm_unlink_ptr: Assertion `0' failed.
	AlsaPlayer interrupted by signal 6

from Steve Harris

korg1212
  - doesn't work with jack - appears to work with other alsa apps, could be
    jack bug
(not tried in last few weeks)

from Pau Davis

hdsp
   - cold+warm boot required to get output working
   - 96kHz and 88.2kHz not accessible via PCM interface

rme9652
   - 96kHz and 88.2kHz not accessible via PCM interface

wavefront
   - cs4232 PCM output does not work at all (produces white noise)

Could you add these items?

- interaction between number of channels and sample rate
(setting one should restrict the other to the "legal" values)
- could not get it to work with external sync, tried both adat and
word clock (I sent a message to the list about this).

perhaps it depends on the wine version.
IIRC, alsa WORKED on the older version but not on the newer.

anyway, there is another better solution for such a situation.
you can set the running mode for oss emulation

	# echo "wine 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

so that wine runs on the "direct" mode without plugin.

ciao,

Takashi
