Summary: alsamixer crashes system when snd-ioctl32 is loaded
Description:
alsamixer crashes system hard when snd-ioctl32 is loaded.
System still responds to some sysrq commands (sync remount boot show) -
sysrq (term killall) has no effect.
There's no chance to do any other keyboard input. No logs, no traps, no
oops. Machine still responds to ping,(even port 22 stays open) but login
via ssh is not possible.
alsamixer, of course, is useless without the ioctl32 wrapper loaded - but
does not crash the system then.
So I suspect a problem in the ioctl32 wrapper.

it works fine with AMD64, so i guess the problem should be in sparc arch
implementation...

Just an update to say that this is still valid up through 2.6.7-bk12

That mailing list thread refers to an ALSA patch that fixes the problem and
which was not posted. It would help if you could get that patch and post
it here.

A patch for one fix can be found here:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=44333&action=view
That is sufficient to get 'amixer' working.
I'm going to go through and fix the other IOCTL now, and after it's
tested, I'll post the final patch here for you.

All that's left is pcm32.c... hopefully I'll get to it sometime this
weekend...

With this patch i can get sound out of my U5 :).. Although the quality
isn't very good, some kind of background noise in alsaplayer. A friend of
mine told me that he also had that when using alsa's oss emulation, so
that's probably the driver not the emulation layer..
I've not put #ifdef sparc everywhere like eradicator does.. Using user
pointers directly from get_fs() == KERNEL_DS is wrong everywhere. It just
happens to work on some architectures
Also the function _snd_ioctl32_ctl_elem_value now always returns -EINVAL
when indirect data is used. I couldn't find out how that works..

sound/control.h is included a few lines up, so no need to duplicate... and
the syscalls.h I am assuming is for this change here:
- err = file->f_op->ioctl(file->f_dentry->d_inode, file, native_ctl,

+ err = sys_ioctl(fd, native_ctl, (unsigned long) &data);
why was that made?

will cause -EINVAL to be returned when a workaround is possible... it also
kfree()s something that was never allocated...

Also, I argue that it is best to leave in the #if defined(__sparc__) ...
#else ... #endif because the code works on other architectures (even
though it is of bad form) in a more optimized way... perhaps a better
option would be #if defiled(__x86_64__) || defined (__ppc64__) ... (I
think those are the right symbols for those archs)... does anyone know if
it works on mips?
I'll get a "next itteration" of my patch which incorporates the changes to
pcm32.c and the test for data.count > 0 which I missed (hopefully when I
get home in about 4 hours)... but please comment on my comments above so I
know what direction I should take on those issues.
Thanks,
Jeremy

- data->value.integer.value_ptr =
compat_ptr(data32->value.integer
.value_ptr);
+ if (data->indirect) { /* FIXME: this is not correct for long
arrays */
+ /* FIXME Broken because in get_fs() == KERNEL_DS all __user pointers
should
+ * be in kernel space */
+ err = -EINVAL;
+ goto __end;
+ }
...
+ kfree(indirect);
will cause -EINVAL to be returned when a workaround is possible... it also
kfree()s something that was never allocated...
---
Also, I argue that it is best to leave in the #if defined(__sparc__) ...
#else ... #endif because the code works on other architectures (even
though it is of bad form) in a more optimized way... perhaps a better
option would be #if defiled(__x86_64__) || defined (__ppc64__) ... (I
think those are the right symbols for those archs)... does anyone know if
it works on mips?
I'll get a "next itteration" of my patch which incorporates the changes to
pcm32.c and the test for data.count > 0 which I missed (hopefully when I
get home in about 4 hours)... but please comment on my comments above so I
know what direction I should take on those issues.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Ok, I uploaded alsa-driver-1.0.7.ioctl32.patch:
This basically incorporates the changes in sjoerd's patch as well... I
return -EINVAL if indirect is used (like he does), but I show what I think
would be an acceptable workaround if I understand what it's doing (but
like him, I'm not entirely sure what that IOCTL is doing, so hopefully
someone else can provide a better fix for that one).
That all being said, I still can't get alsa sound output using my
ens1371... oss emulation still works fine, and with the patch alsamixer
works well, but the machine is still hanging on pcm playback using:
aplay /usr/kde/3.3/share/sounds/pop.wav
This is true using both my patch and sjored's, so I think we're still
missing something...

Your right about the cp++ bug ofcourse. But note that kfree(NULL), just
like free(NULL) is an perfectly valid operation. So the cases you pointed
out aren't bugs, it's ment to work that way :).. The indirect value does
indeed always do kfree(NULL), i started fixing that one but couldn't find
out what it was ment to do. So i stopped, but never cleaned up the
start..
Also note that on the sparclist i posted a patch against 2.6.9 and here
one against the alsa CVS. I never did test the patch against alsa CVS, but
it was trivial to forward port. But that's why there are little
differences
On the matter whether to do the extra buffers on all architectures. I
don't think you gain a lot from different codepaths for different archs,
because some are just a minimal amount faster.. If you really want that
though, i would only do the ones in pcm32.. The others are afaik just done
on application startup most of the time.. The big downside of the ifdef
stuff is that your code doesn't get as well tested as with just one
unified code path (and we know how well the original code was tested on
sparc..)... Ofcourse if you do the ifdef way, special case the archs where
you know it does work, so it will at least work on an untested arch :)
As last thought for now. Both our patches allow one to specify in an ioctl
how much memory the kernel should allocated.. That's not very good, so
there should be some upper limits added. But i'll leave that to the alsa
people, because they probably know what sane limits are for these
functions.

A friend of mine just tried both my patches on his blade 100. The cvs patch
against 2.6.10-rc2 did indeed freeze his machine. Linux 2.6.9 with the
patch that was on the sparclinux list worked fine.. So either i forgot to
forward port something or something else was broken..
On a side note, his sound didn't have any distorsions. So the bad quality
i'm hearing is the alsa driver for my card and not the 32 bit emulation
layer

So the bad quality
i'm hearing is the alsa driver for my card and not the 32 bit emulation
layer

ok, good point about the code testing on different archs, and you're right
about the speedup being minimal... I'm just alays nervous about changing
something for other architectures when I can't test it... I still want to
leave in the #ifdef stuff around the indirect code as we didn't really
"fix" that so much as forced it to return an error...
I'll try out 2.6.9 with your list patch and compare to see what's going
wrong...
Also, I'm not familiar with "__attribute__((packed));" What does that do,
and why was that removed from the ends of the structs?

Ok. You apparently hit another problem. Just to very sure you could try my
patch on the sparclinux list on a vanilla 2.6.9..
__attribute__((packed)) requests the kernel to pack a struct, which means
that there is no padding added. Normally a compiler can choose to add some
padding between the fields for better alignment, which can cause some
speedup.
The ioctl code encodes the size of the argument, thus the size the kernel
has and the size userspace has must be the same otherwise the ioctl is not
recognized. More important if the offset of the fields differ between user
and kernel space, nasty bugs can happen (which the reason for encoding the
size)
Using the packed attribute in kernel space and not in userspace can cause
a
size difference, that's why it was removed..

The other problem seems to be related to pcm_hw_params. I've got a patch
against alsa-driver.1.0.7 which changes pcm_hw_params to
DEFINE_ALSA_IOCTL_BIG(pcm_hw_params) like in the 2.6.9 kernel sources...
I'm guessing this was recently changed, and reverting back to the old way
causes it to work on sparc...

Hmm... it would make sense to me to change the userspace struct to pack
rather than the otherway around because we are using 2 different compilers
for kernel and userspace code, and those different compilers may padd
differently. The latest patch doesn't address that issue (and I'm leaving
it up to the alsa devs)...
The latest patch applies cleanly against alsa-drier-1.0.7, and it produces
working modules with linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r14 and vanilla linux-2.6.9. You
need to first apply the patch in bug
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=658 to compile sparc
modules with
the alsa-driver package.
This final patch is now being used by Gentoo.
sjoerd: Thanks for all your help =)

Hmm... it would make sense to me to change the userspace struct to pack
rather than the otherway around because we are using 2 different compilers
for kernel and userspace code, and those different compilers may padd
differently. The latest patch doesn't address that issue (and I'm leaving
it up to the alsa devs)...
The latest patch applies cleanly against alsa-drier-1.0.7, and it produces
working modules with linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r14 and vanilla linux-2.6.9. You
need to first apply the patch in bug
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=658 to compile sparc
modules with
the alsa-driver package.
This final patch is now being used by Gentoo.
sjoerd: Thanks for all your help =)

If I understand correctly, this problem can be better avoided by allocating
the 64bit struct via comapt_alloc_user_space() and calling ioctl callback
without set_fs(KERNEL_DS)? In this way, you can reduce the extra kmalloc.

Ah... there's no EXPORT_SYMBOL(___copy_in_user) in 2.6.7... Unfortunately
sparc has stability issues with kernels >2.6.7, so most people are still
running patched 2.6.7 kernels on sparc... I'll try it on 2.6.10_rc2, but
this should really work with older kernels as well...

ok... I'll try again once you get that wrapper written... 2.6.10-rc2 is
locking up for me on boot (but it's not snd-ioctl32's fault as it's not
loaded...) so I can't test there for you...

So I suspect a problem in the ioctl32 wrapper.

ok... I'll try again once you get that wrapper written... 2.6.10-rc2 is
locking up for me on boot (but it's not snd-ioctl32's fault as it's not
loaded...) so I can't test there for you...

copy_in_user() is available on other architectures (at least x86-64 and
ppc64) with 2.6.7, either exported or inlined.
I found some thinkos in the last patch. The new patch is attached.
If this still doesn't work, please check via strace which ioctl fails.

So I suspect a problem in the ioctl32 wrapper.

copy_in_user() is available on other architectures (at least x86-64 and
ppc64) with 2.6.7, either exported or inlined.
I found some thinkos in the last patch. The new patch is attached.
If this still doesn't work, please check via strace which ioctl fails.

Hmm, the lockup seems happening because of stack shortage.
Your patch is doing wrong: convert_from/to_32() can't be used for
conversion between kernel and user spaces. They are for between user
spaces.

Hmm, the lockup seems happening because of stack shortage.
Your patch is doing wrong: convert_from/to_32() can't be used for
conversion between kernel and user spaces. They are for between user
spaces.

Thanks for checking. Just to be sure, could you try snd-dummy driver and
timidity on sparc64?
Since it works on x86-64, I guess it's driver-specific. (EPIPE error
means usually the buffer under/overrun.)

It happens with snd-ens1371, snd-sun-cs4231, and snd-dummy

and for the record, it doesn't work with my original fix as well, so it
seems to be a different issue...

Ok, I commit the changes to the ALSA CVS. The final patch (hack4) is
attached. (In the ALSA CVS tree, the sparc-hack is removed in the main
source for submission to linux kernel tree, BTW.)

So I suspect a problem in the ioctl32 wrapper.

ok, will the sparc patch be included in the alsa-driver tarball though as
one of the backwards compatibility patches that get applied?
I'm testing the new patch now

Yes, the sparc64 hack is in alsa-driver tree.
