Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1694
Category: PCI - intel8x0m
Reproducibility: always
Severity: block
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: Debian "Sarge" with kernel and alsa from "SID"
Kernel Version: 2.6.14

Summary: snd-intel8x0m unable to initialize the Modem device
ICH6
Description:
Dear Maintainer and Reader,
I couldn't get the modem in my Notebook "Acer Aspire 1692WLMi" working.
I found a lot of things recommended in different Mailing lists and blogs
but they did not solve my problem. I use alsa Ver. 1.0.10-1 with
kernel Version 2.6.14 with source from Debian "SID".
The current status is that two modules are loaded during boot,
snd-intel8x0 and snd-intel8x0m. When both modules are loaded
the sound doesn't works. Only when snd-intel8x0 is loaded alone the sound
works fine.
If I additionally load module snd-intel8x0m sound does not work anymore
and error messages in syslog are printed.
So I think the error messages are a buck in the snd-intel8x0m module.
There is no /proc/asound/Modem present when I load the snd-intel8x0m
module.
In the "Additional Information" Section I paste some debugging output.
Regards
Guido

Yes, or to investigate how it works and extend driver to support this hw,
but this will not be easy task.

So let's resume:
I can now load snd-intel8x0 and snd-intel8x0m at the same time and the
sound
output still is working.
I have a conexant modem chip and a intel ICH6 modem controller.
For the conexant modem chip I will need the hsf codecs from linuxant.
So is the snd-intel8x0m module for any use for my type of hardware
combination?
What can I do with this module?

Regards
Guido

guido - 01-12-06 23:43
----------------------------------------------------------------------
here is what I did:
- Downloaded the alsa-driver-1.0.11rc2 source package
- Unpacked it
- made ./configure from within the alsa source directory
- executed "make" and "make install"
so the newly created modules have been installed into my kernel
modules package.
- rebooted
- looked at /var/log/syslog and found the following alsa message:
ALSA
/home/guido/software/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.11rc2/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:2002:
MC'97 0 converters and GPIO not ready (0x1)
- Improvements to Version 1.0.10:
Sound works now from boot with snd-intel8x0 and snd-intel8x0m module
loaded
at the same time.
A valid modem device "/dev/ttySL0 -> /dev/pts/0" is now created.
(before I used alsa driver Version 1.0.10)
- Now I did the same things with the patch provided from you for
intel8x0m.c
but the /var/log/syslog output was the same.
- See attached syslog File The output looks everytime the same with
patched
Version or original 1.0.11rc2.
- Sound works but there is no modem dialtone. I think because of the
ac97_codec error in syslog.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
sashak - 01-13-06 00:21
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This modem (CXT30) is unsupported and will not work.
The only good result is that sound is ok.

sashak - 01-07-06 01:56
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think there is Conexant's AMC (audio/modem codec) - CXT30, Conexant modem
codecs are not supported by intel8x0m (due to lack of docs), so this will
not be helpful anyway.
Of course intel8x0m driver loading sould not lead to problems with sound.
This problem may be investigated. If you are with recent version of
alsa-driver could you send output of 'dmesg' after snd-intel8x0m loading?
