Hello,
I am not at all expert in these matters - please forgive any omitted
information - I will be happy to provide more / carry out tests.
I use Arch Linux. I have a compaq nx6325 laptop with a BCM 4311. I have been
using the standard kernel module(s) and version 5.100.138-2 of the b43-firmware
from the Arch User Repository. I connect to my home router (TP-LINK
WD8960N) using netctl as follows:
Interface=wlan0
Connection=wireless
Security=wpa
ESSID=geoffnet
Key=<my key here>
IP=static
Address=('10.0.0.2/24') Gateway='10.0.0.138' DNS=('10.0.0.138')
Authentication at the router set to "WPA2-PSK (best)"
Everything has been running perfectly until the kernel was upgraded from 3.14 to
3.15 a couple of days ago. I can still bring wlan0 up and down with "ip link
set", but I can no longer connect to the router. netctl fails. The output of
status netctl at geoffnet.service is :
* netctl at geoffnet.service - Networking for netctl profile geoffnet

If I try to connect using wp_supplicant rather than netctl the the output is an
endless loop of "CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-STARTED".
I have confirmed that reverting to kernel 3.14 cures the problem.
I have found one other bug report which involves the same machine and
4311 card. It appears to be treated as an issue with the closed Broadcom module.

Additional information as per your bug report guidelines is appended.
I am not subscribed to this list, please copy me in on any response.
Thanks in anticipation for your help.

First reported in:
[0] Linux 3.15: WLAN regression on WRL54GL/B43?
Fixed by:
[1] b43: fix frequency reported on G-PHY with /new/ firmware
The patch has yet to hit Linus's tree, then I'll be applied to older
(stable) trees. So hopefully you will see this fix in 3.15.2 or
3.15.3.
For now you have to stick to 3.14, or temporarily replace your
firmware (in /lib/firmware/b43) with the older version 478.104 (if you
know how).

Many thanks for the prompt response Rafa?. I had read the list archive, but I
could not tell if that was my issue, and I had no idea that reverting to older
firmware was a possible fix. That is probably within my capabilities (I used
to do many such things when running Linux From Scratch, until Arch made
me lazy), I will give it a try.
