Broadcom 4303 HP Pavilion zv5000

Hello, i have an older computer from my father (HP Pavilion zv5168ea) 
and i decided to install a Xubuntu distro (tried 11.10, now 11.04) for 
my personal use, but i can't get a wireless connection to my router (i'm 
using WPA-personal encryption but tried with open and nothing). The 
driver is installed, i can see wifi essid on NetworkManager but the 
connection is never carried out. I've installed 
firmware-b43legacy-installer because it has the driver for this card but 
nothing...

Not sure what you could do to debug this. As quite try you can swith to PIO
rmmod b43legacy
modprobe b43legacy pio=1

If that's not going to help, you could try to dump wireless traffic
with another machine. It would be good idea to at least check, if your
BCM4301 sends any packet at all.

Also, have you tried connecting to any other networks? Would be also
nice to try.

The channel info reported by firmware isn't valid.
1) PHY type is not set:

This shouldn't be critical, as it seems only single packet was
corrupted. However it may point some general problem with hardware
calibration, or sth.

This make unavailable wifi at all. It only makes light on and off wifi 
led constantly.

How can i do this? Wireshark? I need some help to know how to do this 
if it's possible.

Well, at this moment i can't do this, i need someone with another 
router to try connect. My router is an Asus RT-N16.

Not driver - the driver is part of the kernel. That package installs the firmware.

I have snipped the rest of your posting - it looked normal.

Check the settings on your AP to make sure it is not set for "G - only". The 
BCM4303 is an 802.11b device (note above), thus you need the "802.11 B/G" 
setting, whatever it is called for your AP.

My BCM4303 works fine with WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption.

For unknown reasons, wireshark fails to capture data on my computer as well abd 
my BCM4303 works. Use kismet.

In general, do not drop the mailing list from the distribution list. ALWAYS use 
"reply-all". All of my debugging is made available on the list. If you do not 
accept that restriction, then I will be unable to help you.

You can analyze the .pcap file produced by kismet with wireshark. Look for probe 
requests from your BCM4303 and the response from the AP. If you cannot analyze 
the data, it is OK to send the pcap file to me privately. I will limit the 
traffic to just your ESSID and post it on the list if I cannot figure out what 
is wrong.

Uhmmm....my bcm4301 is not sending any packets. In fact, using kismet if 
i execute dmesg i don't see any message trying to connect on the 
output...there is only inizitialization of the driver.

Is the kismet*.pcap file empty? After starting kismet, you will then need to

The only extension that i can open with wireshark is .dump. But there 
i've only seen wifi stations sending packets, my wifi router sending 
broadcast packets, but nothing from my broadcom device.

On my system, none of the packets from my BCM4303 are captured, even though the 
interface is working fine. You will need to use another computer to capture the 
packets.

My version of kismet makes a pcapdump file.

There is a wireshark version for Windows. As I never run Windows, I cannot say 
if it works. Try it and find out.

It will not matter if the Windows machine is connected to the router. All it 
needs is a wireless interface whose driver allows promiscuous mode.

Ok. I've used wireshark on other laptop (windows 7) and i can't see any 
packets from my bcm4301, i've filtered by eth.addr and there isn't any 
packet.

Just to make sure that Windows wireshark is working, please boot Windows XP on 
the machine with the bcm4301 and redo the test. Do you see the packets?

It would appear that the radio is being blocked. Does that zv5000 have a 
wireless switch? It should show up in rfkill, but it might not.

I'm going to be out of town for a few days starting this morning. To get on the 
air, you might try blacklisting ssb and implementing ndiswrapper using the 
Windows XP driver. That will work only if you are using a 32-bit Linux system.

Yes it has a switch, but light is on, and i can see wifi essid, 
sniffing...i think that i put rfkill list output here, and it has all 
unblocked (soft and hard).

I'll try it with ndiswrapper. Thanks for your helping, i'll send a mail

1) Linux + b43 = RX ok, TX broken
2) Linux + ndis = RX ok, TX broken
3) XP = RX ok, TX ok

Jes?s: I could try debugging if we got any working Linux driver. Even
ndiswrapper is alright, we could grab MMIO dumps from ndis na b43 and
compare them.
Could you try using some different Windows driver with ndiswrapper?
Maybe some another one will work with this BCM4301 device?

The Windows driver you've loaded in ndiswrapper don't seem to work.
Could you try finding another (newer?) one and use it with
ndiswrapper?
I don't know the name of Windows driver, no idea if it's called
bcm4301, bcm43xx or whatever else.

i can't find any new driver for my laptop. I've tried with this one

but on ndisgtk says that hardware is not present, so i think that this 
driver is not good for my laptop.

That driver link above was horrible. I had to download the awful media manager 
software just to get to actual driver package downloaded.

Once I got that stuff, the .inf file contains lines with PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4303, 
but not PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4301, which is what your device needs. At least I think 
the output of 'lspci -n' should have a line with "14e4:4301".

One thing you could try is to edit the inf file and change "DEV_4303" to 
"DEV_4301". It might work.

Kernel freeze with what? If it is ndiswrapper, remember that we do not debug
