Thank you for this contribution! We certainly need more defconfigs.
Below are a few comments on your patch. Please consider them and if
necessary re-post it. If you will not be able to re-post it, let us know
so someone else can adopt it.
We will certainly need a Signed-off-by tag on your patch, i.e. a line saying
Signed-off-by: Your Name <your@email.address>
This is a short way for you to assert that you are entitled to contribute
the patch under buildroot's GPL license. See
http://kerneltrap.org/files/Jeremy/DCO.txt for more details.

What does 'Binaries blob' mean?

The processor is called "i.MX53", I believe. We also usually don't
include the vendor name in the processor identification. So something
like configs/imx53loco_defconfig is probably more appropriate. OTOH,
Freescale themselves seem to call i.MX3x processors "imx" and i.MX5x
processors "mx5"...
> diff --git a/board/freescale/mx53loco/linux.config b/board/freescale/mx53loco/linux.config
Personally I'd prefer to use a kernel defconfig (mx5_defconfig), but
perhaps this one is more appropriate.

I think it is better (more predictable) to specify an exact version instead
of the latest HEAD. Either a git sha or a tarball, e.g.
http://git.freescale.com/git/cgit.cgi/imx/linux-2.6-imx.git/snapshot/rel_imx_2.6.38_12.01.01.tar.gz
(if that is a relevant snapshot at all).

mx53loco was afaik the internal code name for the board. Officially it's
called the i.MX53 Quick Start Board
(http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=IMX53QSB),
but the mx53loco name is also used other places, like E.G. the kernel.
I don't really feel strongly about mx53loco vs imx53qsb though.

I agree if possible, as that's one thing less to maintain.

I think the main difference is that the mx5_defconfig includes several
BSPs, not just the loco. So this custom one will probably result in a
(slightly) smaller kernel.

Which imho isn't a big priority for a defconfig (compared to the other
issues for maintenance overhead, platform/driver support included, ..)

There are two differences between mx5_defconfig and this defconfig :
- mx5_defconfig include several BSPs which result in a failure in uImage
building (multiple load addresses).
- CONFIG_MMC_BLOCK is set as module in mx5_defconfig. Since mx53 has no
nand memory, this seemed relevant.

Fair enough. It would be good to document this in the log message.

By 'Binaries blob' I mean Freescale Multimedia Codecs. Current buildroot
configuration will probably not allow users to use them.

Ok for the vendor name.
For imx53/mx53 it seemed appropriate to name it mx53 since it's the name
in kernel and u-boot.

Buildroot config and Linux Kernel config.
Freescale binaries (xf86 video driver and multimedia codecs) not supported yet.

Hi,
So, finally, I realized there IS a good kernel defconfig in freescale
git, I just had to look in the right branch, not in master... sorry.
I hope I fixed all your comments about my patch (except maybe about
mx53/imx53 name, I'm still not shure what is better). If some changes
are still needed, please say so.

Given that this is the u-boot board name, I think mx53loco_defconfig is
indeed a good name.

I haven't looked at it, but isn't this a defconfig that requires a
device tree blob? Or is it just one that includes a number of
devboard BSPs?

Committed to next, thanks.
The freescale git-over-http is horribly slow though :/
