hi all, new to the buildroot list - I have some free time, and I've been
using buildroot for a while in projects with my previous employer, so I'm
keen to repay some of the time and effort it has saved me in the past. This
list of bugs looks like a great place to start ;)
Shall I just begin to submit patches or are there likely to be people
already looking at these issues ?
The fan-ctrl failure for all arches looks like it might have been a
sourceforge problem. The package is fetched from a sourceforge svn
repository (regular package tarball downloads from sourceforge look OK).

Some people might be looking at them, so if you start working on an
issue that seems to be a bit long to investigate/solve, don't hesitate
to reply to the autobuilder e-mail saying on which issue you are
working on.

Yes, it's a download problem. Just ignore for now, hopefully
SourceForge will be back soon.

Welcome. Looking into autobuild issues and posting patches is a great way to
start. Make sure to read
http://nightly.buildroot.org/manual.html#_analyzing_and_fixing_autobuild_failures
before you start. An overlap in autobuild issues fixing happen at times, but
it's quite rare. Anyone is allowed and encouraged to post build failure fixes,
as well as run-time failures, though the autobuilder currently doesn't catch
failures of the latter type.

It most likely has to do with recent sourceforge infrastructure issues
(http://sourceforge.net/blog/sourceforge-infrastructure-and-service-restoration/).

I noticed there are around 200 packages that download from sourceforge. I
didn't do an exhaustive investigation but noticed that zlib is fetched from
there. Might it be better to fetch this (and other packages) from their
authoritative site, where one exists ? (in zlib's case,
http://zlib.net/zlib-1.2.8.tar.gz ?)
[sourceforge has been in the news for other reasons lately .. I get the
general feeling that it is a resource that is not long for this world .. ]

Yes, generally speaking identifying all our packages that are still
hosted on SourceForge or Google Code, and finding if there is an
alternate download location would be very good. Patches going in this
direction are welcome. However, beware that the new location should be
somewhat "official": we don't want to use some random Github fork as a
replacement for a Sourceforge / Google Code download.

Understood, it makes no sense at all to use Joe Bloggs' zlib fork :) I
think we should use whatever the project owner's website specifies as the
authoritative sources (in a few of the cases I checked, though, this is
still sourceforge - nothing we can do in those circumstances).
I'll take a look into this as well as looking at some of the build bugs.

Take the configuration, run menuconfig and exit, you will see:

The problem is that nfs-utils selects libtirpc without properly caring
for the thread dependency. This is caused by a patch from Maxime
Hadjinlian that added a "select BR2_PACKAGE_RPCBIND" in
nfs-utils/Config.in.
Since we probably don't care much about using nfs-utils in a
non-threaded scenario, maybe we could simply do:
comment "nfs-utils needs a toolchain w/ threads"
depends on BR2_USE_MMU
depends on !BR2_TOOLCHAIN_HAS_THREADS
config BR2_PACKAGE_NFS_UTILS

We could try to be smarter and use portmap when no threads are
available, but really this is too much complexity for such a corner
case.
