Hi,

I've hit a bug in using the combination of bsrange and verify.
Basically I want to do a random write test with a variable block size,
and then verify the content after the write. But for some reason, the
verify phase fails consistently.

Linux distribution:
Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS, Linux version 3.5.0-23-generic
$ fio --version
fio 1.59

Conf file:
[global]
thread=1
ioengine=libaio
buffered=0
direct=1
runtime=5400
write_iolog=./w_iolog2

[rand-write]
bsrange=512-32K
filename=disk.raw
iodepth=1280
size=256M
verify=meta
verify_pattern=0x33
rw=randwrite

The output complains as the following:
Jobs: 1 (f=1): [V] [50.5% done] [0K/0K/0K /s] [0 /0 /0  iops] [eta
01m:40s] verify: bad magic header 0, wanted acca at file
/home/maohua/test-clone/softwareCache/qemu/iscsi_sdd2/disk.raw offset
1179648, length 0
fio: pid=6118, err=84/file:io_u.c:1477, func=io_u_queued_complete,
error=Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character

Fio 1.59 is ancient. Please try and reproduce on a recent version and
report back what happens.

Recreated with fio 2.0.11-35-g8428, the version was checked out from
https://github.com/axboe/fio.

I read a little bit of the source code, it seems to me the randwrite
option gets the LBA without specifying the IO size. With that said,
for a bsrange option, it is likely one random IO can step onto another
IO if they happen to be adjacent. For example, request A has LBA
of 1024 and size 8K, request B has LBA 1016 and size 16K. Without
checking the request size, request B can overwrite content of request
A.

Is that the right interpretation? Do I miss something? Thanks.

2.1.4 is the latest, but I don't think that would change anything for
you.

Fio is supposed to handle that, the job file should work. I'll take a
look at it.

Works for me with the 2.1.4 release. It's actually broken in current
-git, due to the numberio patches...

You mean all of the "verify_only" support patches or specifically this patch:

commit da0a7bd224bb9331f27bb4b20394dd5c8fa3acb0
Author: Juan Casse <jcasse@chromium.org>
Date:   Tue Sep 17 14:06:12 2013 -0700

    Adds check for numberio during verify phase.

I can take a look at this tomorrow... let me see if I have the job
file in another email.

thanks,
grant

It looks like it's actually catching the issue, when I take a closer
look. I'm afraid there might be overlapping ranges for bsrange=. You can
use the job file that was posted earlier in this thread. I reproduced
with that one, just changing the min bs to be 4k instead (to avoid btrfs
slowness...).

OH. Got it. :) Good. Had me worried for a moment.

BTW, it looks like there is also a bug in "random_pattern_fill"
support. When specifying verify_pattern the problem went away. See
this bug:
    https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=337651

my workaround is here:
    https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/#/c/183813/

(should probably start a new thread for that)

> I'm afraid there might be overlapping ranges for bsrange=.

I can reproduce with fio-2.1.2 + verify_only patches (output below).
It's always a 512 byte long corruption which in fact would suggest
"off-by-one" overlapping ranges.

Got job file and didn't change anything - just ran it on a raw partition.

But another bug has been uncovered. If you run this:

[global]
filename=fio.ver
loops=10
verify=crc32

[random-rw]
size=31457280
rw=randrw

fio will complain about unmatched seeds in later iterations...

Please do :-)

Note that the print is actually wrong. It's verifying in extents of 512,
but does verify the whole thing. But yes, there's a bug there, but the
length print is not correct.

Puthikorn just posted a patch that fixes 4 issues that he's found so
far which can cause this symptom. Let's continue the conversation on
that thread.

cheers,
grant

ps. I've already teased him about the C++ style comment in his patch. :)
