Is it really needed to declare those variables outside of a function
in this case? This scheme makes difficult reusing the code from other
builtins, rewriting it for libification, calling it many times, or
even understand if they were declared that way with a purpose or not.
I just don't know why they are that way in this case, is there a
reason for it?

Okay, I suppose we will end up using the big macros then. Though I had a
look at diff_opt_parse and setup_revisions, the move isn't for tomorrow.

  The current code is heavy (at best), and has some logic that parseopt
is not yet ready to deal with (mainly the --not flags).

That's an example of mixed-mode UI, but what you are suggesting
is quite different, isn't it?

There is no other officially supported single-command-way to
checkout paths out of the index.  "git checkout paths..." does
not introduce a confusion because of that.  The user learns the
way git supports that concept and that's the end of the story.
The same thing can be said about "git checkout <commit>
paths...".  That's _the_ way to checkout paths out of an
arbitrary commit.

In the case being discussed, we already have the concept of
checking out paths from the index, which has an officially
supported way to express.

You are proposing to give it a synonym "git revert paths...",
which superfitially sounds friendlier.  But I actually think
allowing a mistaken

	git revert path...

to be burned to users' fingers and brains is doing the user a
great disservice.

The next person would say "Why doesn't 'git revert HEAD path...'
work?", and you would add the synonym to do 'git checkout HEAD
path...'.  Up to that point it is sort-of Ok (but not quite).
You already have "git checkout" that let's you do so, but you
introduced new concepts that are "revert paths to the index" and
"revert paths to the last commit".

Which may make you feel good, but you just introduced a narrower
synonym the user needs to learn, than a more established and
wider concept that we already have: "checkout paths out of X",
where X are either the index or an arbitrary commit.

The reason I think the narrower synonym is bad and will lead to
more user confusion is because after that point you will have
a few issues.

Another newcomer would say "I like the fact that 'git revert
HEAD path...' works but why doesn't 'git revert HEAD~12 path...'
work?".

 - You may further allow "git revert <arbitrary-commit>
   path...".  But what does that _mean_?  "revert the path to
   the twelfth commit"?  You may implement that _anyway_.

   Then, the user would say "eh, why do you have both 'git
   checkout path...' and 'git revert path...' that seem to do
   the same thing?  There's no difference?  Why Why Why, git is
   so hard to learn".

 - You may instead not to do so, and explain that the "arbitrary
   commit" form is not supported and tell the user to use "git
   checkout <commit> paths...".

   The user will say: "but you earlier told me to use revert --
   you could have taught me to use checkout from the beginning
   and saved me from great confusion instead".

Giving the same concept two different names is bad unless there
is a compelling reason to do so.  Labelling an initially
narrower subset of an existing concept with a different name,
and having to extended that 'new concept' ending up with the
same as the existing concept is even worse.

While still not convinced about that "unnecessary", i had to admit the risk
of breaking something with my addition was too high. What about a compromise?
I have improved the documentation about shared repositories. A patch coming
shortly.

If I remember correctly there is/was some preliminary work (at most 'pu'
stages) about adding --dirty option to git-merge, git-pull and git-rebase.

I thought files were always numbered, but the [PATCH m/n] wasn't. Have I
missed something?

If your --numbered-files is supposed to affect only file-numbering, I'd
suggest *not* using --numbered, as it's ambiguous with "number-subject".

Why is missing "cur" (or "new", for that matter) a fatal error?

I think the current behavior is more odd. We mark some errors, and then
if there were any possible pushes, we replace the marked errors with the
status of the actual push, forgetting about the previous errors. Thus
the behavior where if 'next' needs pushing, then we don't mark any errors
at all (even though we spewed an error to stderr), but if it doesn't,
then we return an error.

I don't mind being conservative with updating tracking refs; they really
are just an optimization to avoid an extra git-fetch. But the most
sensible behavior would be to mark errors for _each_ ref individually,
try to push or update tracking branches where appropriate, and then
return an error status based on all refs (whether they had an error in
prep time or at push time).

Which I guess is what you were trying to accomplish by removing the
peer_ref, though I think that doesn't distinguish between "didn't match
a remote ref" and "had an error." Perhaps we just need an error flag in
the ref struct?

I would also be fine with that: if your intended push has _any_
problems, then abort the push.

I don't necessarily agree, just because the notion of "we" and "somebody
else" is sort of pointless in a distributed system. I consider local
tracking ref updates to be a "best guess" attempt to optimize and avoid
a fetch (but one that will always be overwritten by the _actual_
contents when you do fetch).

and then we accept that we don't know _which_ refs shouldn't have their
tracking branches updated (and we don't update any). But at least we
don't forget that the error occured.

And the better solution is an error flag (or bitfield) in struct ref.

You're right. There's both --numbered ([PATCH n/m] stuff) and
--numbered-files (0001.patch instead of 0001-subject-line.patch). I'll
revise my patch to clarify this.

It is not just "loose" objects here, but also unreferenced objects in packs,
since the "-a" option to repack is now only used when --prune is specified.
Without --prune, "-A" is supplied to repack instead.

So maybe the message should just be "prune unreferenced objects"

I agree that makes the most sense.

As Steffen has been advocating on another thread, depending on
your workflow, you do not care about some classes of push errors
per pushed refs.  The update of the remote and local tracking
refs should be done in sync (i.e. if the remote wasn't updated,
never update the corresponding local), but it can depend on the
nature of the failure if a failure to update a remote ref should
result in the non-zero exit status from git-push as a whole.

And to implement that, per-ref error flag would be a good way to
go, methinks.

You need to switch your mindset from centralized SVN workflow.

The beauty of distributedness is that it redefines the meaning
of "to commit".  In distributed systems, the act of committing
is purely checkpointing and it is not associated with publishing
the result to others as centralized systems force you to.

Stop thinking like "I need to integrate the changes from
upstream into my WIP to keep up to date."  You first finish what
you are currently doing, at least to the point that it is
stable, make a commit to mark that state, and then start
thinking about what other people did.  You may most likely do a
"git fetch" followed by "git rebase" to update your WIP on top
of the updated work by others.

Once you get used to that, you would not have "a dirty
directory" problem.

Okay, let's step back a bit.

We taught "git show" to show other objects than commits, by doing the 
obvious things.  So there _is_ a precendent to changing a commands 
behaviour to accept more than just commits.  And there was already another 
command for the same purpose, cat-file, which was never meant as 
porcelain however.

Now, what does "revert" _mean_?  At the moment, it wants a commit, and 
will undo the changes that commit introduced, _and commits it_ (asking 
for a message).

What would I expect "git revert -- file" to do?  It would undo the changes 
to that file -- and since no commit was specified, I would expect it to 
look at the changes against the index.  (IOW exactly what Steven 
proposed.)

To continue the analogy, it would have to commit the undoing of the 
change.  But since that change never was committed, I think it is more 
natural to _not_ commit it.

In the same way, I would expect "git revert <commit> -- file" to undo the 
changes in that commit to _that_ file (something like "git merge-file 
file <commit>:file <commit>^:file"), but this time commit it, since it 
was committed at one stage.

IMHO this would be a consistent behaviour _and_ help new git users.

After all, we are not Python, supposedly narrowing users down to 
one-way-to-do-things only.

That's possible, but I think we currently only care about per-ref stuff 
for whether we actually did a push to that ref, and we care about whether 
we had a failure that affects all refs, and we care (for the return value) 
whether we have any errors at all.

I think it's actually very significant what commits made locally have 
or haven't been made public.

That is, -2 means that we've done less than was asked, but nothing blew 
up; -4 means something blew up. When we skip something, we drop peer_ref 
from it, so there's nothing to update (and it's dropped from the set of 
mappings, in case we cared further about it with respect to reporting the 
actions we actually took). Then we update all refs that were acted on if 
ret isn't -4, and we return non-zero if ret is either -2 or -4.

Don't assume the "admin privilege" part, as you do not have to.

You are newly hired to work on project-X, and the sysadm throws
you into projectx group.  Thesysadm further prepares a directory
'/pub/project-X' and makes it mode 2775 (aka ug=rwx,o=rx,g+s).

Do you want to create a new repository for projext-X group's
use?  You do:

	$ cd /pub/project-X
        $ GIT_DIR=mine.git git init --shared

and you now have a usable /pub/project-X/mine.git repository for
project members.  I do not think you would need any chmod/chgrp
after this step.

An organization may use different SCM depending on the projects'
needs, and there is no reason members of projects A and B should
be in the same group 'git' while having members of project C in
group 'hg' only because A and B happen to use git.  It would
make more sense to either (1) make members of all three projects
belong to 'src' group, or (2) make three groups, one for each
project.

IOW, I do not think the above is a good suggestion.

Also with the "create new --shared repository for the project in
a group's directory that has mode 2755" approach, I do not think
there is any need to muck with umask either.

Strange behaviour of git grep on one of the projects I hack on...

  $ git --version
  git version 1.5.3.5.561.g140d

  $ git grep LOB lib
  fatal: insanely many options to grep

After a bit of head-scratching I realised I was in the middle of a
merge, with some unresolved paths in the lib directory. A bit of
testing shows that the unresolved index is probably the problem:

  $ git grep LOB lib
  fatal: insanely many options to grep

  # an unresolved file
  $ git grep  LOB lib/accesslib.php
  fatal: insanely many options to grep


  $ git grep --cached LOB lib
  (... expected grep output...)

  $ git reset --hard
  $ git grep LOB lib
  (... expected grep output...)

... not sure what the correct behaviour should be -- I guess the most
reasonable action would be to grep the files on disk for those
unresolved paths. In any case, the error message is insanely many
confusing to user! ;-)
