Intel/Pineview graphics won't load 1024x600 resolution in X11

Hello,

First: if this is the wrong place to ask, would you please 
point me to the appropriate channel.

I'm using an N450 processor with the GMA 3150 Pineview graphics
system.  When X11 starts, it seems to detect that it's capable of
1024x600, but then loads 800x600 instead.

Any idea why it won't load the correct resolution?

Basic info:

     OS:            Ubuntu/Jaunty with several backports
     X.Org Xserver: 1.6.0
     kernel:        2.6.33.2-rt13
     intel driver:  2.11.0
     libdrm:        2.4.18

Possibly related:

     /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf has this:

         options i915 modeset=0

     When it has modeset=1, the console has a nice 128x37
     display, but X11 won't load.

Because you're using the vesa driver, and you should be using the intel
driver.

How do I get/force it to use the intel driver?  I thought 
that was supposed to happen automatically.

It looks like Ubuntu's driver selection mechanism doesn't think the
intel driver can drive that chip:

(II) No matches found for this device in /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci

Which is pretty lols since it means they managed to introduce new
failure modes.  Outstanding work, cadet.

Simplest thing to do is remove the vesa driver, but that'll only work if
your kernel includes Pineview support, and I don't remember if 2.6.33
and/or Ubuntu's version of it includes Pineview.  Think it does though.

First:  I _really_ appreciate your help!

I added 8086A010, 8086A011, and 8086A012 to a file 
/usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci/intel.icv, and then I get:

    (EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
    (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected
    (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

So, I went back to /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf and set 'modeset=1'
(was 0).  When I do that, the Console initializes and uses a
framebuffer (which looks nice)... but when X11 starts is garbles the
screen and makes the virtual terminals unusable (like when vsync or
hsync is wrong).  I think the error messages are the same, too.

This suggests that I'm missing a kernel module, right?  What would
it's name look like?

How can I confirm?  I'm actually using Debian/experimental's version
of 2.6.33.

No, that suggests that you have a KMS driver, just that it's buggy.
It'd be called i915.ko.

At this point you probably need to consider it a Debian kernel bug.  I'd
try a 2.6.34 build, if they have any.

Your X server uses the VESA driver. This list is about the intel
driver. As 1024x600 is not a resolution defined by VESA, it won't be
used by the VESA driver. If you switch to the intel driver, it should
work (and also give reasonable and nice features like video and 3D
accelleration).

In the logfile, the intel driver is loaded but not used. I don't know
why. Maybe because it is loaded too late. You might try to remove the
VESA driver and the fbdev driver.

To be perfectly clear, because I see this mistaken interpretation far
too often:

The vesa _driver_ does not define modes.  At all.  Your (VESA VBE [1]
conformant) video BIOS does.  There is a list in the BIOS that varies by
platform, and that's all that the driver can use.  Some machines might
be able to do 1024x600 with the vesa driver, if their BIOS includes that
mode.  But it's nothing to do with any list of modes published by VESA
the standards organization [2], nor is it something that the vesa driver
can control.

[1] - Video BIOS Extensions, a set of real-mode programming interfaces
defined by VESA way back in the dark ages.

[2] - Many BIOSes do include modes that VESA has written down as
standards, and often exclusively modes of that sort.  But they _may_
include any modes they wish.

I build 2.6.34-rc5 and got the right resolution.  I have 
"other" issues, though.  I'll work through those before 
bugging you about them.  :-)

FYI:

I originally was using my own build of 2.6.33.2-rt13.  I 
also tried debian's current build 2.6.33.2 (or .1) and got 
the same results.
