DP1 Monitor Flashes

Hello,

I have a Dell L502x which have a optimus Graphic Pack:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA
controller])
        Subsystem: Dell Device 050e
        Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 51
        Memory at f1400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
        Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        I/O ports at 4000 [size=64]
        Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
        Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
        Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [a4] PCI Advanced Features
        Kernel driver in use: i915


Using driver:
         2.99.905+git20131023.b70390b4

When I use a DELL U2713HM Monitor on the DisplayPort,  it will flash blank
for 5 seconds in a 10 minutes interval.
The monitor is at 2560x1440 (60hz).

This is not ideal, but I can live with.


The big problem is when using bumblebee with intel-virtual-output -b.

In this case the monitor will enter in energy save state instead.

The only way back is to turn it off and on with xrandr:

     xrandr --output DP1 --off
     xrandr --output DP1 --auto

The odd thing is if I use instead a Mini DisplayPort  adapter to a Dual DVI
output, this problem will not happen.

The downside of this solution is that I will need to add a new mode at 41hz
with:

     xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_41"    162.00 2560 2608 2640 2720 1440
1443 1448 1468 +hsync +vsync


So, What I am looking at is the source of the problem:

If the source of the problem is the driver, which debug information should
I provide?

Or is it a problem with the DP of the monitor?

Or a problem with the Display Card?

Or should I lower the frequency in the DisplayPort (as with the DVI)?

Please provide dmesg with drm.debug=0xe module parameter from early boot
to the problem. If the problem takes a long time to reproduce, you can
provide two dmesgs, one from early boot and another covering the
problem.

I was hoping for the dmesg from the start (which lets me check the
kernel command line and i915 initialization).

I don't see anything particularly wrong with that. There's the
occasional dimming of the backlight - that's not what you're referring
to is it?

Could you describe the problem a bit more please?

I will put into a few scenarios:


1 - LVDS1 + DP1

Dell U2713HM using a Display Port cable (display) to a Mini Display Port
(Notebook).
No adapters.

This is where the logs belongs to.

Some random  time after boot (15min, 1hour), the DP1 screen will blank for
a period between 2s to 5s and come back again.
This will keep repeating for 5 to 15 min endless.



2 - LVDS1 + HDMI1

In this case, the U2713M display is using the HDMI port and a HDMI do mini
Display Port adapter.

I can get the 2560x1440 resolution only if I lower the frequence to 41hz or
lower (which I believe is a HDMI limitation).

No problem at all.


3 - LVDS1 + DP1 + VIRTUAL2

Same as (1) with and extra screen on bumblebee: intel-virtual-output -b

This time the U2713M display enters in sleep mode instead of blanking and
does not come back (by itself).
I believe this is the same trigger from (1), but for some reason it is not
just blanking.

To revert this, I have to use xrandr to turn the display off and on
(--auto).


4 - LVDS1 + HDMI1 + VIRTUAL2

Same as (2) with bumblebee.
No problem at all too.


I am not sure if this could be a faulty display or cable if not the driver.
(or how to detect it).

I too am having the same issue. I'm running on kernel 3.12.6 (just updated)

The issue happens less frequently, but it still happens and it's quite
annoying.

Previously I would just get lines like this:

[  342.071567] [drm:ilk_display_irq_handler], Pipe B FIFO underrun
[  342.071584] [drm:cpt_serr_int_handler], PCH transcoder B FIFO underrun

But after the recent kernel update it looks like there are some more debug
messages being sent out like this:

[  624.430107] [drm:i915_driver_open],
[  624.439972] [drm:i915_gem_context_create_ioctl], HW context 1 created
[  624.450177] [drm:i915_gem_context_destroy_ioctl], HW context 1 destroyed

I have a bug open for this, but I haven't heard a response on next steps
unfortunately :(

I've gone ahead and updated to the latest nightly:

Linux rnavarro-thinkpad 3.13.0-994-generic #201401100405 SMP Fri Jan
10 09:05:49 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The release done on 1/10/14

I'm still getting the underruns, they're actually a bit more frequent
now. Right after I logged in I got one one my second monitor, and then
shortly after another on my first.
