This is v2 of [1]. Improve the abstractions for display code.
The main goals are:
1) The display code does not access struct drm_i915_private or struct
xe_device. It only uses its own struct intel_display instead.
2) The i915 and xe driver cores do not access struct intel_display
directly. It becomes an opaque pointer to them, stored in struct
drm_i915_private and struct xe_device, and passed to display code.
This will mean a lot of churn, unfortunately. But it will better
separate the display code from the xe and i915 driver cores, and pave
the way for a) removing -Ddrm_i915_private=xe_device from xe Makefile,
and b) stop building the display code twice.
What's presented here goes a long way, and could get us started. But
there are still opens, such as:
1) How to handle platform checks such as IS_TIGERLAKE().
2) How to handle access to non-display members of i915/xe, such as
i915->uncore.
There are other similar things, but I believe those are the most
prevalent, and are the biggest blockers for converting a lot of
functions over from i915 -> intel_display.

Long term goal: Separate display code from struct drm_i915_private and
i915_drv.h, and everything in them. Ditto for xe.
First step, draft some ideas how we could use struct intel_display as
the main device structure for display, while struct drm_device remains
in struct drm_i915_private (or, in the case of xe, in struct xe_device).
To get at struct drm_device * given a struct intel_display *, simply
store a backpointer.
To get at struct intel_display * given a struct drm_device *, require
storing a struct intel_display * right after struct drm_device in
memory. It's slightly hackish, but devm_drm_dev_alloc() facilitates
defining the enclosing struct as we wish.
A shared named struct for this would be nice, but that would require
changing all the i915->drm and xe->drm dereferences. The use of an
unnamed __packed struct avoids that.
Users are added in follow-up patches; the patches may be squashed
together before final submission.

Convert various pointers to struct intel_display * using _Generic().
Add some macro magic to make adding new conversions easier, and somewhat
abstract the need to cast each generic association. The cast is required
because all associations needs to compile, regardless of the type and
the generic selection.
The use of *p in the generic selection assignment expression removes the
need to add separate associations for const pointers.

To emphasize, getting from struct drm_device * to struct intel_display *
is the biggest problem this solves.
We have a lot of drm hooks that have a drm device/connector/encoder/etc
parameter and no additional context. We can always get from other
objects to the drm device, but how to get from that to intel_display?
We don't want to know the definitions of struct drm_i915_private or
struct xe_device within display code. We don't want to have a function
call to i915 or xe cores to translate drm device to intel_display.

For a moment I almost complained of this because of the generic magic,
but mostly because I had guc related code in mind where you can never
find the definition, but here it is different. the used 'to_intel_display'
can easily be searched by cscope/ctags and then you are able to see
below what are the accepted cases, so I ended up liking it.

Yes. I just kept them separate while still juggling the whole thing.
And it occurs to me we could make *this* the first patch in the series,
by making the above function:

}
Then we could only add the struct drm_device *drm backpointer in struct
intel_display from patch 1, and proceed with patches 3-4, avoiding the
whole magic thing for starters. It would unblock a whole lot of
refactoring as the first step.

as long as we don't lose the ability to use cscope/ctags to find
these definitions I would be okay.
right now a cscope on intel_crtc would show the _assoc(intel_crtc...
but if we lose that we kind of go to the dark side of the macro
indirections.
