The fact that you are going to Rwanda makes it even better.
One of the things I was working on is the following:
Originally, some of you guys were saying that ELKS, since it can run on
any pc, from an 8088 to a Pentium IV, could
be a very useful in developing countries where old computers are much
more common that the newest ones.
Is there anybody who can give me some infos about this side of ELKS?

Here's what I've found out from discussions with computer recyclers 
around the world. (Canada, BTW, has one of the most well developed 
computer recycling programs.) The resourcful ones have plenty of demand 
for pentiums, 486's, and even 386's, and put most of the ones they can 
salvage back into use. They even use 286's for word processing machines 
and are pretty much matched with supply and demand.

They have some use for 8086's for some science applications, but they 
have more supply than demand. If they had applications for the 8086's, 
they would love to put them to good use.

Even when they recycle the parts for scrap metal and keep them out of 
landfills, that's still a poor utilization of the resource compared to 
keeping them functioning as intact computers. As insignificant as these 
computers seem by today's standards, they are so far above having no 
computer, particularly with the right applications.

The value to society of keeping these computers doing something of value 
is huge. When you add the value of keeping them out of landfills it gets 
much bigger. With the billions of dollars companies are sinking into 
open source and the potential liability exposure manufactures like IBM, 
HP, and even Dell will face from the environmental hazards of these old 
computers in landfills, both the actual and PR value of supporting a 
program like ELKS is a no brainer. We just need to present this to the 
right people who do the funding for open source.

If anybody has the right connections to get some financial support for 
ELKS from some of the sources that are already funding open source, 
please get this info before them. Compared to what's being spent 
elsewhere, we're really talking small change and huge return on investment.

I'm planning to visit Red Hat in the next few weeks before I head for 
Rwanda. They probably don't have the funding themselves but should be 
well connected to those who do. I'm hoping to inspire them to put some 
support into this. Hopefully that will get the funders to throw some 
small change behind ELKS and get this project to a stable, functioning 
level.

It sounds really good to me and I can see a lot of material for a good story.
We at Lulop are thinking about opensource too for our videopusher software that
we use for videonews distribution to broadcasters, so this has a double
importance for us.
Going back to Canada, can you tell me more about this program? What is the name
of the organisation who is managing this?
By the way, I am looking forward to meet you in London and speak more deeply
about this issue so we can put a nice piece altogheter.

As far as meeting in London, I don't know what your timetable is, but 
mine isn't 100% definite yet. I am very committed to accetping the 
invitation to bring Inner Peace to Rwanda. Since I have no idea how 
involved things will be there I'm going with an openended return. So, I 
need to have my projects here well functioning enough to continue in my 
absence if I am gone for a long time. That may mean I would have to 
delay my trip to Rwanda a bit and not be able to meet you in London in 
mid July.

Feel free to email me offist if you want to discuss anything in detail 
that the list might not want to bother with.

I forgot who started this thread, but my hat goes off to whoever did. It 
has breathed new life into ELKS. This is an exciting project and I'd 
love to see it get to a stable and usable level.

Actually I have a better idea.
Please, take with you a dvcamera or any other camera in Rwanda and film yourself in
that enviroment anwering the questions I will send you about ELKS. The questions will
be very connected to the third world issues too and how computer running ELKS could
be used in countries like Rwanda.
Also, if you could send us the coverage of the Inner Peace project, we will be happy
to distribute it and syundicate it through our network of corporate and no-profit tv
broadcasters.

Dear Emanuele,

I'm not sure how ready the InnerPeace-8086 project will be by the time I 
go to Rwanda, even if I don't go until August. The current plan is to 
have a beta release ready in time for the eGovOS conference in Paris in 
November. We feel pretty confident of being able to do that. I'll keep 
you and the list posted as that develops.

On the first phase of the Rwanda project, I'll be teaching people who 
want to learn the Inner Peace process how to run it on themselves and 
teach it to others. The focus for the first phase will be with people 
who speak both English and the local language. After some of them 
demonstrate an aptitude for it, they'll be the ones to take it to the 
people who speak no English.

I'll send you some more info on parts of the Inner Peace project 
unrelated to ELKS offlist.

I'll give you my take on it:  I suppose the U.S. it probably the worst
place to use as an example because you can probably get a good Pentium for
free :)  Anyway, I recently bought *another* IBM PC, in good working
condition, with a 30 meg MFM drive added, for $1, and decided I'd get
*another* IBM green mono monitor, so I spent another $1.  In other words,
the only difficulty I've had finding working hardware is that most people
have gotten rid of it years ago.  I made an ELKS boot and root disk and it
booted up with no problem, and works great.  I made another disks with a
terminal emulator on it, and had problems getting it working right.  I can
fool with all the usual UNIX commands, but that isn't very exciting, and
I don't know of any other good aplication.

In the new site we will have the status of the project, as well as the
TODO list and docs, this site is intended to be available in several
languages.
Regarding the project it self, the last commit was indeed several months
ago, i am trying to organize my time to get back into all this.

We are currently using webspace provided by sourceforget, but it would
be nice to some space at other server to have a mirror, and upload some

They don't appear to have CVS access though - you just download the
entire source. Okay if you're going from 0.9 -> 1.0, but annoying if
you're going from 0.9 -> 0.9.1 on dialup.

I've got my machine setup with DNS, Web, FTP and email (scanned with
ClamAV to check for virii too!). I was tinkering with the CVS server
last night, and have been meaning to get round to sorting out Mailman
on my server too. I don't have any download limits or quota to worry
about (it's hosted on my ADSL connection).

Besides, it'll give it something to do other than crunch SETI@home work
units all day!

I was getting annoyed last night because SF's CVS keep dropping me
halfway through getting the ELKS modules. I'm still not sure I've got
all of the files!

It hasn't totally died. While we're not working on developing ELKS 
directly, we are working on an application to run on it.

We plan to deploy old 8086's as single purpose computers in prisons, 
halfway houses, rehab centers, third world countries, and other places 
where it wouldn't make economic sense to put more valuable computers. 
While the apps won't be embedded per se, since the computers will have 
only one purpose that users will be able to access, they will have the 
same practical functioning as an embedded system.

We expect to have an alpha demo of one of our smaller programs ready 
within a month, maybe sooner. Here's a little more info:

If you have any interest in helping, we could use some input. I'm not 
personally doing the coding for this project, myself. Inner Peace is 
computer science applied to healing the human psyche. I'm stronger on 
the human psyche part, and I have some folks who are stronger on the 
computer science part working on the code part. From what I know, we'll 
be using C and probably ncurses. It'll be all gpl, just like all the 
Inner Peace software.

I did an Oxlug talk on Elks in March which was the last time I did any
work on the project, I can see if I still have the slides.  ISTR the
last flurry of discussion mentioned the lack of a project lead to drive
the project, especially as Riley and Harry seem to have quietened down.

I'm still around, but things have been hectic (as in crazy) for me
since my wife walked out on me in July 2002 and I've only just managed
to sort things down such that I can think about working on ELKS or
similar projects again.

Hi Richard,

I am still here. As you may be aware the Distribution Edition is my area on
the project.

I have to confess I haven't done too much work on it lately. EDE 0.0.5b kind
of goes as far as it can with kernels and ELKSCMD versions available. I have
a short list of things that I would like to add but time doesn't really
allow me at the moment. I do field the occasional off-list question that is
fired my way.

The main work that I have "in progress" is a package manager that I call
EPM. (<g>). A lack of packages has kind of dampened the enthusiasm to press
on with it for the moment but I am sure I will get back to it when work
allows me a little more time.

I have, recently, moved the EDE web site onto my own hosted web space as
well. I also registered a domain name for the sub-project. www.elks-ede.com
holds my EDE project notes and historic downloads. There is a link back to
the sourceforge site for the latest download.

I live in Cambridgeshire. If I can contribute to any media activity I would
be glad to.
