Thanks for your comment and sorry for the late reply.

My question is about submitting DT properties/nodes (describing some HW) for
which there is no Linux driver. Like register addresses for HW blocks,
including HW capabilities of said HW blocks, which may or may not be setup
by Linux directly.

The idea being that since DT describes the HW and is usually shared with the
bootloader (yet stored in the Linux kernel tree), all layers of the stack
could use the same DT and each layer would use relevant properties. So the
DT would describe the whole SoC even if not all HW blocks have a Linux
driver.

3rd party users of said SoC could then write kernel modules for such HW
blocks using the DT description. The DT would thus become the authoritative
source of information regarding register programming for the SoC.

Currently, HW blocks for which there is no public driver (that it is
accessed through user-mode libraries or firmware) require a separate
HW description (be it Documentation, headers, etc.)

Since the DT describes the HW, it would make sense to expose the HW through
DT, that would centralise the HW description.

However, after discussing over IRC, it looks like there was no guidance on
this. Some people think submitting DT properties/nodes without a corresponding
Linux driver is frowned upon, while others thought it was an odd limitation
and suggested asking here.

Does that clarifies the scope of the question?

Best regards,

Sebastian

Another option is to not have a memory node if the start address is
not known at build time, since U-boot creates a memory node if is not
found in the FDT.

Sorry, I missed the fact that affinity bits is only required for gic-v2,
while what we have here is a gic-v3. So please ignore the comment.

This is confusing when people is looking at nodes in /proc/device-tree.
Why cannot we give it a reasonable default configuration instead of

* [PATCH v8 8/9] drm/mediatek: update DSI sub driver flow
From: YT Shen @ 2016-09-12 12:01 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-arm-kernel
In-Reply-To: <1473681672-47144-1-git-send-email-yt.shen@mediatek.com>

This patch update enable/disable flow of DSI module and MIPI TX module.
Original flow works on there is a bridge chip: DSI -> bridge -> panel.
In this case: DSI -> panel, the DSI sub driver flow should be updated.
We need to initialize DSI first so that we can send commands to panel.

* [PATCH v8 3/9] drm/mediatek: add shadow register support
From: YT Shen @ 2016-09-12 12:01 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-arm-kernel
In-Reply-To: <1473681672-47144-1-git-send-email-yt.shen@mediatek.com>

We need to acquire mutex before using the resources,
and need to release it after finished.
So we don't need to write registers in the blanking period.

* [PATCH v8 2/9] drm/mediatek: add *driver_data for different hardware settings
From: YT Shen @ 2016-09-12 12:01 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-arm-kernel
In-Reply-To: <1473681672-47144-1-git-send-email-yt.shen@mediatek.com>

There are some hardware settings changed, between MT8173 & MT2701:
DISP_OVL address offset changed, color format definition changed.
DISP_RDMA fifo size changed.
DISP_COLOR offset changed.
MIPI_TX pll setting changed.
And add prefix for mtk_ddp_main & mtk_ddp_ext & mutex_mod.

* [PATCH v8 0/9] MT2701 DRM support
From: YT Shen @ 2016-09-12 12:01 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-arm-kernel

This is MT2701 DRM support PATCH v8, based on 4.8-rc1.
We add DSI interrupt control, transfer function for MIPI DSI panel support.
Most codes are the same, except some register changed.

For example:
 - DISP_OVL address offset changed, color format definition changed.
 - DISP_RDMA fifo size changed.
 - DISP_COLOR offset changed.
 - MIPI_TX setting changed.

We add a new component DDP_COMPONENT_BLS, and the connections are updated.
OVL -> RDMA -> COLOR -> BLS -> DSI
RDMA -> DPI
And we have shadow register support in MT2701.

We remove dts patch from the patch series, which depends on MT2701 CCF and scpsys.

Changes since v7:
- Remove redundant codes
- Move the definition of DDP_COMPONENT_BLS to patch of "drm/mediatek: update display module connections"
- Move _dsi_irq_wait_queue into platform driver data
- Move mtk_dsi_irq_data_clear() to patch of "drm/mediatek: add dsi interrupt control"
- Add more descriptions in the commit messages

Changes since v6:
- Change data type of irq_data to u32
- Rewrite mtk_dsi_host_transfer() for simplify
- Move some MIPI_TX config to patch of "drm/mediatek: add *driver_data for different hardware settings".
- Remove device tree from this patch series

Changes since v5:
- Remove DPI device tree and compatible string
- Use one wait queue to handle interrupt status
- Update the interrupt check flow and DSI_INT_ALL_BITS
- Use same function for host read/write command
- various fixes

Changes since v4:
- Add messages when timeout in mtk_disp_mutex_acquire()
- Add descriptions for DISP_REG_MUTEX registers
- Move connection settings for display modules to a separate patch
- Remove 'mt2701-disp-wdma' because it is unused
- Move cleaning up and renaming to a separate patch
- Use wait_event_interruptible_timeout() to replace polling
- Remove irq_num from mtk_dsi structure
- Remove redundant and debug codes

Changes since v3:
- Add DSI support for MIPI DSI panels
- Update BLS binding to PWM nodes
- Remove ufoe device nodes
- Remove redundant parentheses
- Remove global variable initialization

Changes since v2:
- Rename mtk_ddp_mux_sel to mtk_ddp_sout_sel
- Update mt2701_mtk_ddp_ext components
- Changed to prefix naming
- Reorder the patch series
- Use of_device_get_match_data() to get driver private data
- Use iopoll macros to implement mtk_disp_mutex_acquire()
- Removed empty device tree nodes

Changes since v1:
- Removed BLS bindings and codes, which belong to pwm driver
- Moved mtk_disp_mutex_acquire() just before mtk_crtc_ddp_config()
- Split patch into smaller parts
- Added const keyword to constant structure
- Removed codes for special memory align

The PATCH depends on the following patch:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9289401/ ("dt-bindings: ARM: Mediatek: Document bindings for MT2701")
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9222997/ ("dt-bindings: pwm: Add MediaTek display PWM bindings")

Thanks,
yt.shen

Well, we should figure out what tree this is going through first. There
are a mixture of arm, arm64, driver and dts changes here and not all
of it is carrying the appropriate acks for me to queue it.

This has been running in our internal test suite for a week on various TI
platforms. There haven't been any surprises.

Is it a good idea to at least put this in -next for a wider test audience?

Hi,

The changes in arm64's <asm/arch_timer.h> are going to conflict with
some cleanup [1,2] that just landed in the arm64 for-next/core branch.

Could you please rebase atop of that?

This doesn't match the code, which doesn't seem to write TVAL at all,
and instead does the work manually, reading CNTVCT then writing to CVAL.
Please update the patch description.

Following recent cleanup, please use read_sysreg().

Rather than defining a number of inline functions here as wrappers for
read_sysreg(), can we pass the reg name down instead? e.g.

#if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_FSL_ERRATUM_A008585)
extern struct static_key_false arch_timer_read_ool_enabled;
#define needs_fsl_a008585_workaround() \
	static_branch_unlikely(&arch_timer_read_ool_enabled)
#else
#define needs_fsl_a008585_workaround()	false
#endif

#define arch_timer_unstable_reg_read(reg)		\
({							\
	if (needs_fsl_a008585_workaround())		\
		return __fsl_a008585_read_##reg();	\
	else						\
		return read_sysreg(reg);		\
})

... with __fsl_a008585_read_{cntp_tval_el0,cntv_tval_el0,cntvct_el0}
defined appropriately in the driver code.

Please add ARCH_TIMER_REG_CVAL to enum arch_timer_reg, and move these
accesses into arch_timer_reg_write_cp15().

Please:

* Rename this to __fsl_a008585_read_reg, as it's used for registers
  other than the counters.

* Make this a macro, to which the register name is passed in, such that
  it can use read_sysreg(), as with my suggestion above regarding how to
  restructure the function.

* Move this into the ifdef'd block in the arm64 header, leaving the
  callers where they are in the driver code.

Nit: use 'old' and 'new', so as to not imply that this applies (only) to
CNT{V,P}_CVAL.

Nit: s/timeout/retries/

What's the ISB for?

The core should order accesses to the same counter, and any ISB required
for ordering against other counters should already be present. So I
don't follow what this is trying to achieve.

If this is necessary, please add a comment explaining what it is
intended to ensure.

like:

I'm not keen on the magic hook to reset the function pointers, and the
additional phys/virt stubs seem pointless. Instead, can we fold this
into the existing set_next_event? e.g. have that do:

	if (needs_fsl_a008585_workaround() {
		fsl_a008585_set_next_event(access, evt, clk);
		return;
	}

... with a stub BUILD_BUG() fsl_a008585_set_next_event() when
!CONFIG_FSL_ERRATUM_A008585, and:

#ifndef needs_fsl_a008585_workaround
#define needs_fsl_a008585_workaround()	false
#endif

... in the driver, so as to not cause issues for 32-bit.

Can we move the next patch before this, and avoid messing with the name
entirely?

Please log something, e.g.

We could, but then we'd corrupt the task state in sigreturn, since
we wouldn't have been able to save/restore part of the state.

For internal interfaces within a single component that's tolerable,
since a single value would be used for each of these constants
throughout the build of that component.

A quick search on sources.debian.org suggests that the total number of
packages that expose {,MIN}SIGSTKSZ dependent definitions in their
public interfaces is small (I couldn't find any after paging through
dozens of pages of results -- so the total is maybe in the range 0-10)
-- hopefully few enough to eyeball.

> >I wonder whether we should make the signal stack size runtime
> >discoverable through sysconf() instead...

I will likely suggest this for the future, but of course it doesn't help
for current binaries.

Note that MINSIGSTKSZ stared life wrong for arm64, and has since gone
through a few ABI breaking changes. I don't condone this, but we have
form in this area :/

sigaltstack() already fails with ENOMEM for software that passes
ss_size = MINSIGSTKSZ, and is built against glibc<2.22 [1], [2], running
on linux>=4.3 [3], which is an ABI break in case where sigaltstack() is
otherwise guaranteed to succeed.

The bottom line here is that the sigaltstack() API is broken with regard
to extensibility, so we cannot extend the amount of signal state without
breaking something.

The least-wrong thing I can think of to do is:

* deprecate but continue to support the existing sigaltstack API/ABI
with today's {,MIN}SIGSTKSZ definitions

* guarantee (as much as possible) that software using this ABI continues
to work (by saving/restoring only data that _must_ be saved/restored at
each signal, which may be small enough to fit)

* providing a clean failure mode (fatal signal) when this proves
impossible at signal delivery/return time;

* define a new interface for runtime-querying the required signal stack
size;

* define a new syscall or new stack_t.ss_flags flags (say, SS_STRICT)
that permits the kernel to enforce a runtime-determined minimum greater
than MINSIGSTKSZ when calling sigaltstack().

Another option would be:

* define a new interface for runtime-querying the required signal stack
size, and

* support the current API/ABI, but make a call to sigaltstack() SEGV or
SIGILL the caller if it specifies ss_stack >= MINSIGSTKSZ but smaller
than the actual runtime minimum.

(this would cause old software to break immediately in an obvious way on
new systems, forcing people to fix their software -- which they might or
might not actually bother to do).

Thoughts?

Cheers
---Dave
