[Bluez-users] GNOME bluez applet request

Hello,

As part of the Bluetooth support in Mandriva Linux 2007, which will be
released shortly, the GNOME bluez applet is required. "Applet" is a bit
of a misnomer here, because the icon settles in the notification area.
Once activated, it stays there and the only thing it does is showing
discoverability status changes.

I would like to point out that it goes against the GNOME Human Interface
Guidelines to display a notification icon perpetually.[1] The reasoning
behind this is that the notification area is designed to inform the user
of important events, and when lots of notification icons are displayed
at the same time, this waters down the primary function of the
notification area.

In fact there is another bluetooth-related icon in my notification area
that spends 99,9% of its time doing nothing, for which I've filed a bug
already.[2] Is there a bug tracker for bluez where I could file a
request to only display the notification icon for important events?

the CVS version of bluez-gnome has an option (compile time) to hide the
icon, when no adapter is attached. This should become a GConf option,
but it hasn't been integrated yet. Feel free to send patches.

Thanks for your reply. However you didn't address the crucial point of
my request, that is that the icon should be hidden always, whether an
adapter is attached or not, *except* when an event occurs that the user
should be notified of.

If bluez were written in Java I probably would, however I have no hope
of producing C patches for this in the forseeable future.

this is not my understanding of it. I might add such an option at some
point, but right now, I won't bother.

That's a bit disappointing to hear. Please realize that every single
icon on the notification area that isn't notifying the user of anything,
is diluting the usability of the desktop.

I am happy to accept patches, but for now I am not going to write this
by myself. There is more important stuff that needs to be done first.
