[Bluez-users] Trouble loading firmware with bcm203x

I just bought a Bluetooth dongle that uses the Broadcom 4503 chipset
and I am having trouble getting stable use out of it. I have got it to
work twice before with the following steps

plug it in
modprobe bcm203x
hciconfig up
hciconfig reset (hours of googling to find out this is required)

My only problem is that the firmware loading works with the same
chances as winning the lottery. How can I make it just work on the
first try loading. After the firmware is loaded I can use the dongle
fine. But it is rare to get that to work as can be seen by my trying
for 3 hours last night till I just gave up.

I am running Ubuntu Edgy and have tried using various kernel versions
from 2.5.17-2.6.20-rc1

For my Broadcom BCM2045B2 chipset dongle loading the hci_usb module
with "reset=1" worked wonderfully. Thanks again to Marcel Holtmann
from this list.

Thanks that info will really help.

I thought I should add that I get no errors when trying to upload the
firmware. It just does not work.

if you post the content of /proc/bus/usb/devices, I can make the reset
option permanent for this dongle and you don't have to worry about it
anymore.

Here is the output. Note that the firmware is not loaded. When it does
load it adds a fourth entry in lsusb with 0a5c:2120 (Note the device
may be wrong since it is from memory) this one is the one that gets
ran by the hci_usb before the firmware is loaded the dongle +
mouse(included in package) work like any wireless usb mouse.
I also in my first message mixed up the chipset info it is a 2045 I
accidently wrote the device id
If I ever get the firmware loaded again I will get the devices output from then.

BCM 2033 no firmware load 	works 	         works but slow


I have looked and all my usb ports on my laptop and dekstop are ohci.
I have found a really old laptop that has a uhci port but none of my
live disks work because it is decreped hardware so when I find one I
will see if the firmware loads better.

no it is not your problem. You simply don't have a BCM2033 and that was
the only one needed the firmware download.

Yours looks like an HID proxy mode device it might need some extra love
to switch it from HID into HCI mode. However that is always a magic
sequence and for some devices the reset=1 is fully enough. Some others
need some crazy init command. I prefer you try a clean vanilla kernel
and check if the /proc/bus/usb/devices shows a Bluetooth device.
Otherwise you have to sniff what Windows is doing to init your device
and it would be good if someone sends me one of these to have it in my
device library.

I will compile a vanilla kernel to test. I unfortunately can't test in
Windows as I started single booting Linux years ago.

I really think mine needs a firmware upgrade because it has worked
before after running modprobe bcm203x. One time using firmware from
your package and one time I took a file called frmUpgrade.sys from the
windows driver cd renamed it BCM2033-MD.hex and ran it through your
hex2bin program to get a bin and used that. The frmUpgrade.sys

I should of played the lottery because I got lucky again and it is
working. Any tests I should run need to be done fast I can't leave my
laptop turned on constantly

Would knowing that the box says if comes with the Widcomm bluetooth
driver help figure this out. Also I got it to show 0a5c:2120 once with
trying to use the firmware so you where right.

You recommended sniffing it's startup in Windows. If I borrowed a
laptop that had Windows installed would you be able to tell me what
software to use to do that. Noting that I am a end user not a
developer of software so it can't be to technical.

Please help, I still can't get regular use out of this dongle and
can't afford a different one.
