Codex noticed that ssize_t can be smaller than int64_t on 32-bit
platforms, so we mustn't squash the kernel's @written parameter. Linux
will never do more than 2G of IO at any time so this is a theoretical
concern; but it's theoretically possible so we shouldn't lose data.
