Any recommendations on units that can get up and running with little to
no pain? I know that they're definitely not all created equal. Running
openSuSE 11.1.

I have used several of them and so far never have had a problem with Linux,
I have the programming software for the IC-92AD on both my laptop and my
home machine both running Suse 11.1 with the software under Wine, no
issues. The corporate laptop is XP, I have 4 of the things 2 I can not use
under XP because I can not find the drivers, but they work just fine under
Linux.

Sure wish Icom would bring out a Linux version, cheee they run linux on
the D-Star repeater stuff and database, why not provide a Linux version
of the programmer....

I use KEYSPAN, they work great, no problems.
But what are you wanting to use them for?

I don't recall using hardware handshaking on mine so YMMV...

ALCON:

There are several good choices. I recommend the Prolific, which is based
on the PL-2303 or PL-2313 chipset, and Prolific has been good about offering
drivers to function within a MacOS, Linux, and Windoze environment.

I have found their product to work perfectly in all three of those types
of environments, and recommend it.

To be more specific, I have found the Bafo BF-810 product to work well
under Linux. Indeed this product uses the PL2303 chipset, but without
knowing in advance it's very hard to be sure the product you are buying
has this chipset.

The Aten UC-232A also uses the PL-2303 chipset and works with Linux and
Windoze.

my experience is very mixed.
USB->serial seems no problem at "normal" 9600 but had serve problems with
more unusual settings. The quality of the circuits vary very much. They may
run for days and fail suddenly to be ok again after a reset.

The next thing is that companies tend to change the chipsets inside without
notice. I remember one occasion where an older device was working fine
while the latest production failed completely.

I was very disappointed since you have no real change to debug WHAT causes
the problem. Now i try to avoid USB->Serial so far as possible.

.Thanks to all for the info. It appears that the PL2303 units show the
most promise; I'll have to track one down. Over the weekend, I dug up
an old Socket Communications PCMCIA adapter that seems to work, but the
connector is flimsy.

I'm not doing anything too strenuous, just using the port for PTT and CW
keying.
