Please tell me if I can now help.  Myself I only know to try:

a) SATAPI UDMA DVD without CONFIG_SCSI_SATA

b) SATAPI UDMA DVD with CONFIG_SCSI_SATA, with compile-time options and 
other patches applied near include/linux/libata.h

c) Add Di <= Hi PIO auto sense, now that we/ you have overcome:

On Intel ICH5/6, the BMDMA 'interrupt' status bit will be set even on

Please correct me if I err in thinking,

Still today in kernel.org Linux .config we choose one of two SATAPI 
UDMA.  The post:

tells us of an lk 2.6 SATAPI UDMA available near make defconfig when 
CONFIG_SCSI_SATA is not set.  But the focus of this "Subject: Re: Linux 
Serial ATA (SATA) status report" thread is the Linux SATA/ SATAPI we 
get when CONFIG_SCSI_SATA=y.

Easiest for me to try first was plugging an unreleased SATAPI device
into:

Linux 2.6.8-rc1-bk6 i686

After defining ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI ATA_DEBUG ATA_VERBOSE_DEBUG in
include/linux/libata.h, then still I saw the disappointing:

kernel: ata_bus_reset: ENTER, host 2, port 1
kernel: ata_bus_softreset: ata2: bus reset via SRST
kernel: ATA: abnormal status 0x80 on port 0xE007
kernel: ata_bus_reset: EXIT

I guess next I'll fall back to trying an old device, and if need be an
old kernel, to reestablish a base line.  Til I have an interesting
question or patch to share, I may remember to blog how life goes to

Ahhh, trouble was,

Linux to SATAPI/ PATAPI bridge to PATAPI DVD choked over DVD ID jumper
set to 1. Change jumper to ID 0, and life is good again.
