Okay, I made a 1G file, built an ext3 filesystem on it and mounted it
as a loop device. Then I copied the whole C drive directory onto the
loop fs and changed the symlink (~/.dosemu/drives/c) to point to it.
Word still thinks the disk is full. :-(

This probably deserves an RTFM, but... How dow I use mkfatimage16 to
(most likely) solve my problems? Do I build the FAT image and then
mount it as a loop device or is there something I do to tell DOSEMU to
mount it itself?
Thanks.

Hello.

OK, could you try swapping FreeDOS<-->MS-DOS
to see if it is not the DOS problem?

In your dosemu.conf you should add that
image file to $_hdimage. No mounting is
necessary, no lredir either.

Sorry to have dropped this for so long. I tried MS-DOS 5.0 instead of
FreeDOS and that did the trick - Word works perfectly! Thanks for the
suggestion.

Good, but it would be even better if
you raise that problem to FreeDOS people.
This way you'll do the favour to both the
dosemu and FreeDOS users.
FreeDOS developers on that list are scarce,
so you can try opening the bug-report here:
http://www.freedos.org/bugs/bugzilla/
and maybe they will have a look.

Hi,
I have the same problem, but with Word5.5 - it displays "The Word
program disk is full".
The funny thing is that the same setup (same version of
dosemu/freedos/word, same autoexec.bat/config.sys) works just fine on
another PC.
The partition is the same in both cases (it is mounted over NFS) and is
140GB (of which 100GB free). Since in both cases all directories are the
same (NFS is great) this is not a problem with the setup (permissions, etc).
However, the PC that works OK is an Uniprocessor one, and the one which
does not work is 2xXeon+HT.
Luke, does this ring some bells? Is your machime SMP too?

Unfortunately, no. It's just a little VIA Epia-based system (so a
single C3 processor) running Fedora Core 3. Some older versions of
Red Hat seemed to default to an SMP kernel (even on uniproc machines),
so I checked that - turns out this kernel is configured without SMP.
That is interesting though - I wonder if the issue is related to
kernel configuration. Or maybe system libraries. Are both of your
systems running the same glibc? (Of course, system libraries would
imply that the issue is in DOSEMU instead of FreeDOS - I don't know
how much that makes sense.)

The bug number is 1857:

No, it definitely claims to be version 6.0. The about box shows...
Microsoft Word 6.0
Copyright 1983-1993 Microsoft Corporation
All rights reserverd.
And the help menu has an item that pops up a whole section that
describes transitioning from 5.0 to 6.0.

the fix is below, it will probably apply against many dosemu versions.
It is an obvious fix, a surprise it hasn't triggered before.
Still in *this* case the problem only affects freedos, but that's because
I think freedos does the correct thing (forward a commit request to the
redirector), which msdos in my tests did not.

Thank you very very much. You've just converted a couple of desperate
Windows users into happy linux users :-)
Patch applied to dosemu-1.2.1 (Debian) and tested. Now Word 5.5 works
just fine! Great!
Many thanks again,
