Unable to make kernel 2.6.8 up

Hi all
While booting with 2.6.8 kernel. giving error no ata_piix module found.

How to solve it.

Unless you have an Intel SATA contoler on your mobo, (and possably SATA disks) 
then i would imagen you could ignore this message, if you do have the above 
then "please" supply the needed info in your next reply.

What motherboard.
What chipsets does it have.
What disks do you have, make and model numbers please.
Name of distro would also help.

It all comes down you you forgetting to include support for Intel SATA 
contolers which is to be found under;
 SCSI low-level drivers
sub section;
 CONFIG_SCSI_SATA
When chosing the above you will automaticly get the following "option";
 CONFIG_SCSI_ATA_PIIX

I am furnishing the following details.
Motherboard : Intel 865
Processor    : P4 2.4GHz
SCSI           : Samsung Hard disk

I am trying to use 2.6.8 kernel from the GNU (downloaded from kernel.org)

You said your problem was;

"While booting with 2.6.8 kernel. giving error no ata_piix module found"

Now you say you have a SCSI disk, the two are completly different,
With SCSI its now the disk type which needs a driver but your SCSI controler.
It will also need to be compiled into the kernel and NOT as a module.

Simply choose the needed driver with 'make config' or 'make menuconfig' 
recompile the kernel install it and update your bootloader then reboot.

You are being to vauge to help precisely, please learn to explain your 
problem(s) better.

I was able to build it. 
But while, boot up it is giving the error message init not found.

This could be cause by many things, but considering you mentioned SATA and 
then SCSI leads me to belive your new kernel is looking for a partition on a 
differently named drive than you think it is.
For example, some SATA drivers use scsi (emulation) meaning your old system 
has disks defined as /dev/hdX and the new kernel with SCSI or SATA devices 
looks for /dev/sdX

Without knowing what you are doing no one can really say what you need to do.
I can point you to a search engine use "google.com/linux" as the address and 
type, "no init found" in the search engine, you will get a lot of information 
which may help you.

Hi Richard.

I had a kernel patch and i need to test in the latest kernel.
Before that i am trying to bring the kernel 2.6.x up and running.
That is all i want to do.

By the way 
vmlinux -- is the kernel 
vmlinuz --- is the boot sector. 

Why initrd is needed ? 
While mkinitrd, I am getting the error /dev/mapper not found, But
still it makes the initrd image.

Providing the patch you intend to use is for your kernel version why not.

The kernel can be called anything you want it to be called its up to you.

If you compile your own kernel and "include" disk or card drivers which are 
needed to boot the system then you dont need initrd.

Never use initrd so i cant comment.

There are plenty of sites around giving upto date info on howto compile and 
use a 2.6 kernel, i suggest once more that you use google to get more info, 
it is full of it i can assure you.
