OK, so it wasn't as hosed as I thought, and I got back in action :)
So I tried disabling CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL, but upon the next boot
it couldn't load the firmware image either.
I'd appreciate it if someone could suggest the best version to revert to,
so that I can continue testing the previous bug (as opposed to this new
one)...
