Anyone knows of a software for playing audio cd's (not just one track at
a time) for X
that makes the soundcard do the D/A conversion?

There are a few out there .... if you aren't afraid of compiling one up
then try :

You can try alsaplayer, it includes a CDDA plugin that rips audio tracks
and sends them directly to the soundcard DAC. It also allows for variable
speed (pitch) control, even backwards :)

Also there are :
'alsaplayer'
Pretty damn good ... just installed it today, can also play files as well
as do other output conversions like mp3, etc.
'dynamix' or 'project dynamic'
allows dumping to DSP as well as file (as raw data), allows real time
playing with time code for nonlinear tracking (which is also recorded
real time), as well as what I believe was the first app to let cd's play
backwards. It is a bit difficult to compile and only works with ATAPI
(ide) drives as far as I know.
