The memory is likely consumed before the slab allocator bootstrap code is
reached.

Yeah. I cannot make sense out of all of this. What is so special about
node 0?

GFP_THISNODE is also set at a higher level for fallback but it should not
be set for the initial allocation. If you try this with the debug printks
then please use this patch to make sure that all allocs fall back,

Hmmm... Still no fallback? Weird, would you apply the other patch that
filters the __GFP_THISNODE flag and try again? Could you try to add some
printk's to the page allocator to figure out what is going on there? Or is
it clear that the node is overallocated?

Could it be that the node online mask contains a node that has not been
bootstrapped yet?

Dont you have someone who can debug this? This is kind of an awkward back
and forth with me guessing what the system does. Someone with knowledge
about the way NUMA is implemented in the arch code?

There is about a gigabyte of memory on node 0.

What exactly does "available" mean in this context? The console log I
posted earlier showed node 0 as having an active PFN range of 32768 -
278528 (245760 pages, or 960MB), and then showed a "freeing bootmem
node 0" message, *before* we hit the BUG.

If "available" doesn't mean "there are active pages which have been
given to the VM system via free_all_bootmem_node()", what does it
mean?

Paul.

Available in the sense that the page allocator can allocate from them.
Will's console output shows that all memory of node 0 is allocated and not
available.

The page allocator must be running and able to serve pages from the boot
node. This fails for some reason and the slab cannot bootstrap. The memory
not available is the first guess. Could you trace the allocation in the
page allocator (__alloc_pages) when the slab attempts to bootstrap and
figure out why exactly the allocation fails?

Great, thanks. I don't see how to connect this PHY to ucc_geth driver yet. I think
it needs some PHY work first.

Maybe this patch,http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/2006-October/026690.html, will make it better?
Why hasn't it been applied yet?

Ugh ?

I'm not sure what the patch you pointed to has to do with fixups :)

Anyway, the irq code should work with Pegasos. I think the problem is
that it's missing a call to irq_set_default_host() on the i8259 when no
MPIC is present. It's strange, I though I had it... BriQ needs it too.

Possibly... there are still flags that it can't figure out by itself,
like segher never put "big-endian" in the SLOF DT of the blades etc...

But yes, I might move in that direction.

* [PATCH] Slight refactor of interrupt mapping for FSL parts (take 3)
From: Andy Fleming @ 2006-10-20 0:52 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: linuxppc-dev, Kumar Gala, Jeff Garzik

* Cleaned up interrupt mapping a little by adding a helper
function which parses the irq out of the device-tree, and puts
  it into a resource.
* Changed the arch/ppc platform files to specify PHY_POLL, instead of -1
* Changed the fixed phy to use PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT
* Added ethtool.h and mii.h to phy.h includes
---
The 3rd iteration of this patch. Notice I removed the change to
PHY_POLL's definition. While I think it's a reasonable idea, I found
several places where PHY_POLL is assumed to be <= 0, which may not be true
on all architectures (Some could set it to be 32768, or something). So
for now, I'm going to hold off on that change. Also, I know another patch
has been submitted which adds the ethtool and mii headers to the phy
header, but this patch requires it, in order to be warning-free.

No, there's a bigger issue. The UCC driver has not been brought over
to the PHY Layer. Hopefully, this will be rectified in short order.

* [PATCH 1/5] powerpc: consolidate feature fixup code
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 1:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list

There are currently two versions of the functions for applying the
feature fixups, one for CPU features and one for firmware features. In
addition, they are both in assembly and with separate implementations
for 32 and 64 bits. identify_cpu() is also implemented in assembly and
separately for 32 and 64 bits.

This patch replaces them with a pair of C functions. The call sites are
slightly moved on ppc64 as well to be called from C instead of from
assembly, though it's a very small change, and thus shouldn't cause any
problem.

* [PATCH 2/5] powerpc: support nested cpu features
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 1:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list

This patch adds some macros that can be used with an explicit label in
order to nest cpu features. This should be used very careful but is
necessary for the upcoming cell TB fixup.

* [PATCH 3/5] powerpc: Support feature fixups in vdso's
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 1:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list

This patch reworks the feature fixup mecanism so vdso's can be fixed up.
The main issue was that the construct:

.long label (or .llong on 64 bits)

will not work in the case of a shared library like the vdso. It will
generate an empty placeholder in the fixup table along with a reloc,
which is not something we can deal with in the vdso.

The idea here (thanks Alan Modra !) is to instead use something like:

1:
        .long label - 1b

That is, the feature fixup tables no longer contain addresses of bits of
code to patch, but offsets of such code from the fixup table entry
itself. That is properly resolved by ld when building the .so's. I've
modified the fixup mecanism generically to use that method for the rest
of the kernel as well.

Another trick is that the 32 bits vDSO included in the 64 bits kernel
need to have a table in the 64 bits format. However, gas does not
support 32 bits code with a statement of the form:

.llong label - 1b (Or even just .llong label)

That is, it cannot emit the right fixup/relocation for the linker to use
to assign a 32 bits address to an .llong field. Thus, in the specific
case of the 32 bits vdso built as part of the 64 bits kernel, we are
using a modified macro that generates:

        .long 0xffffffff
        .llong label - 1b

Note that is assumes that the value is negative which is enforced by
the .lds (those offsets are always negative as the .text is always
before the fixup table and gas doesn't support emiting the reloc the
other way around).

* [PATCH 4/5] powerpc: Support feature fixups in modules
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 1:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list

This patch adds support for feature fixups in modules. This involves
adding support for R_PPC64_REL64 relocs to the 64 bits module loader.
It also modifies modpost.c to ignore the powerpc fixup sections (or it
would warn when used in .init.text).

* [PATCH 5/5] powerpc: Cell timebase bug workaround
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 1:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list

The Cell CPU timebase has an errata. When reading the entire 64 bits of
the timebase with one mftb instruction, there is a handful of cycles
window during which one might read a value with the low order 32 bits
already reset to 0x00000000 but the high order bits not yet incremeted
by one. This fixes it by reading the timebase again until the low order
32 bits is no longer 0. That might introduce occasional latencies if
hitting mftb just at the wrong time, but no more than 70ns on a cell
blade, and that was considered acceptable.

Surely it doesn't need exporting is its only caller is in
arch/powerpc/platforms/chrp/setup.c?

* [PATCH] powerpc: Fix device_is_compatible() const warning
From: Benjamin Herrenschmidt @ 2006-10-20 1:49 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Paul Mackerras; +Cc: linuxppc-dev list

Fix a const'ification related warning with device_is_compatible()
and friends related to get_property() not properly having const
on it's input device node argument.

Shouldn't the last one be mftbu(), since that's what the asm used to do?

* [RESEND][PATCH] ucc_geth: changes to ucc_geth driver as a result of qe_lib changes and bugfixes
From: Kim Phillips @ 2006-10-20 2:07 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: jgarzik; +Cc: linuxppc-dev, netdev

From: Li Yang <leoli@freescale.com>

changes due to qe_lib changes include:

o removed inclusion of platform header file
o removed platform_device code, replaced with of_device
o removed typedefs
o uint -> u32 conversions
o removed following defines:
  QE_SIZEOF_BD, BD_BUFFER_ARG, BD_BUFFER_CLEAR, BD_BUFFER,
  BD_STATUS_AND_LENGTH_SET, BD_STATUS_AND_LENGTH, and BD_BUFFER_SET
because they hid sizeof/in_be32/out_be32 operations from the reader.
o removed irrelevant comments, added others to resemble removed BD_ defines
o const'd and uncasted all get_property() assignments

bugfixes, courtesy of Scott Wood, include:

- Read phy_address as a u32, not u8.
- Match on type == "network" as well as compatible == "ucc_geth", as
device_is_compatible() will only compare up to the length of the
test string, allowing "ucc_geth_phy" to match as well.
- fixes the MAC setting code in ucc_geth.c. The old code was overwriting and dereferencing random stack contents.

Jeff, this is a bugfix. ucc_geth does not currently build, let alone run. It's a re-send of this:

http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/2006-October/026690.html

but with the removal of the inclusion of a platform header file. So, this patch fixes all buildtime and runtime errors; please apply.
