Would it make sense to make this the only interface for creating TCEs?
That is, pass both a window_size and an IOMMU group id (or e.g. -1 for
no hardware IOMMU usage), and have a single ioctl for both cases?
There's some duplicated code between kvm_vm_ioctl_create_spapr_tce and
kvm_vm_ioctl_create_spapr_tce_iommu.
KVM_CREATE_SPAPR_TCE could stay for backwards-compatibility, or you
could just use a new capability and drop the old ioctl. I'm not sure
whether you're already considering the ABI to be stable for kvmppc.

Ben, David,
I had a quick look at sparc's of_set_property. Nothing special except it
depends on OF_DYNAMIC at some place. Using of_update_property instead
should be the correct function to use. Thanks for the hint, I'll update
the patches accordingly and send v5 hopefully by today.

The only thing is that of_update_property() is a bit awkward to use,
requiring the caller to provide an allocated struct property with
associated allocated content. It also leaks the old property which
is annoying but we haven't sorted out how to deal with allocation
of properties and property content yet.
It would be handy to be able to just do something like
of_set_property(node, name, ptr, len);
However, that wouldn't help much with the allocation/leak problem,
though at least it would be easier to use. It could also *try* to re-use
the current allocation if the new content is of smaller or equal size.
Cheers,
Ben.

* [PATCH 1/1] MPC831x: fix PCI express probing
From: Sergey Gerasimov @ 2013-05-27 12:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Benjamin Herrenschmidt, Paul Mackerras, Kumar Gala, Roy Zang,

Cc: Sergey Gerasimov, linuxppc-dev, linux-kernel
For MPC831x the bus probing function also needs the fixup to assign
addresses to the PCI devices as it was for MPC85xx and MPC86xx.
The fixup of the bridge vendor and device ID should be done early in
PCI probing. Else the bridge is not detected as FIXUP_HEADER is called
too late.

I thought that dtc tried to aggressively save space by folding identical
strings. If you tried to reuse a property that had its contents shared
with another one, you would get interesting results I guess.

Just few bits. Is there really much sense in making one function from those
two? I tried, looked a bit messy.

The old capability+ioctl already exist for quite a while and few QEMU
versions supporting it were released so we do not want just drop it. So
then what is the benefit of having a new interface with support of both types?

Is any bit of KVM using it? Cannot see from Documentation/ABI.

yes, mistake, should be VIO. thanks!

Cannot really tell without the userspace bits. But ioctl proliferation
is what the device and one_reg APIs were supposed to avoid...

I mean the userspace ABI (ioctls).

And this is so much better of an interface because it allows the
OF implementation to decide how to deal with memory allocation
and freeing.

It used to be only property names, unless that has changed in recent
dtc. But that's a good point, we probably want a flag in struct property
like we have for nodes, indicating whether it comes from the original
fdt data pool or not.

But isn't that what current sparc implementation of of_set_property does
when it marks the property as dynamic?
Anyway, this definitely exceeds my knowledge of OF API for sure, so what
do I do about the MAC workaround now?
Prepare the patch with global arrays and switch to some of_set_property
as soon as it is available?

This is similar to what the "OF_IS_DYNAMIC()" thing on sparc
indicates.

Printing it on the console is pointless. No one will read it.
If it's doing the filtering, then just drop the printk.
/* BHRB and regular PMU events share the same privilege state

That updated comment I think make it clear.
So drop the printk and add the comment, and it's OK with me.

It's not clear that all uses of the MPC8315 SATA controller have this
problem. It obviously occured on the 8315DS, but apparently that
board never made it to production; it might or might not happen on the
8315ERDB; and it clearly happens on my vendor's board.
Given this lack of knowledge, Scott Wood was very hesitant to
implement any far-reaching changes, because we could not pin down
exactly what had to be tested.
My original patch:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ports.ppc.embedded/58710
did the speed limiting directly in the sata_fsl code; Jeff Garzik
mentioned that there was some existing infrastructure for this, and I
inferred that he would prefer that I use it.
So that's what my final patch does, and it's keyed off a single OF
value.
There's a small chance that I'll have the opportunity to move the
project to 3.9 (especially if that release gets declared
long-term-stable). Even then, I unfortunately won't have the
bandwidth to pursue getting any of these approaches into mainline.
The best I can do is get them onto the lists so that others might be
able to benefit later.
Either way, thanks again. I'll try to put together a package for my
vendor to test with; once I have demonstrated that there is a problem
with their hardware, they have been gracious about accepting that
result and pursuing it with Freescale if necessary.
Thanks again for your help!
Best regards,
Anthony Foiani

When the task moves around the system, the corresponding cpuhw

request value so that PMU could be configured appropriately with
that during the next call into power_pmu_enable().

In-Reply-To: <1369716452-28689-1-git-send-email-khandual@linux.vnet.ibm.com>
Completely ignore BHRB privilege state filter request as we are
already configuring that with privilege state filtering attribute
for the accompanying PMU event. This would help achieve cleaner
user space interaction for BHRB.
This patch fixes a situation like this
Before patch:-
------------
./perf record -j any -e branch-misses:k ls
Error:
The sys_perf_event_open() syscall returned with 95 (Operation not supported) for event (branch-misses:k).
/bin/dmesg may provide additional information.
No CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS=y kernel support configured?
Here 'perf record' actually copies over ':k' filter request into BHRB
privilege state filter config and our previous check in kernel would
fail that.
After patch:-
-------------
./perf record -j any -e branch-misses:k ls

I'm fine with adding your text as a clarification - but I think 'quietly
ignoring fatal conditions' very much implies an undefined outcome if that
unexpected condition does occur: the code might crash, it might corrupt
memory or it might do some other unexpected thing.
There are many other places that do a BUG_ON() of a NULL pointer or so, or
of a zero refcount, or a not held lock - and turning the BUG_ON() off
makes the code unpredictable _anyway_ - even if the compiler does not
notice an uninitialized variable.
So pretty much any weakening of BUG_ON() _will_ make the kernel more
unpredictable.
> And I come back to one of my previous arguments - is it not better to
> panic() if we hit one of these conditions so that the system can try to
> do a panic-reboot rather than continue blindly into the unknown?
It will often continue blindly into the unknown even if the compiler is
happy ...
The only difference is that it's "unpredictable" in a way not visible from
the C code: the code won't necessarily fall through the BUG() when hitting
that condition - although in practice it probably will.
So I think the same principle applies to it as to any other debugging
code: it's fine to be able to turn debugging off. It's a performance
versus kernel robustness/determinism trade-off.
Thanks,
Ingo

For Server, it is necessary to always enable CONFIG_BUG and call panic()
When analyzing core dump or KDB trap, we have to assume that the kernel
has already "continued blindly", but lucky, we can get the core dump or
KDB trap finally (sometimes, we really even can not get core dump or KDB
trap).
For PC, it is useless to disable CONFIG_BUG
The PC memory has already large enough to skip the minimal size
optimization. And its speed is also high enough to skip the speed
improvement by minimal size optimization.
For Embedded system, some of architectures may disable CONFIG_BUG.
Embedded system are widely used in many area, so the requirement of each
architectures for BUG() may be different,
some may need reboot as quickly as possible for urgent processing;
some may need dead looping in BUG() for avoid user amazing;
(if auto-reboot, users feel out of control, don't know what happens)
some may still need panic() just like Server requirements.
others may not care about it, just implement it as minimal size.

'minimal size' for BUG() is belongs to some of Embedded system specific
features, it is not 'generic' enough to be in "include/asm-generic/".
If we still provide the "disable CONFIG_BUG", some of 'crazy users'
(e.g. randconfig) may make 'noise' to most of architectures.
So we need not provide "disable CONFIG_BUG" features for all platforms,
since most of architectures need not support it, and the architecture
which really need minimal size, can implement it by itself as a
architecture specific feature.
Thanks.
