The code was built into iproute2, so we don't need the .so file.
That rule does not work on arch/x86_64 so I had to do something
and the easiest was to simply compile the code in.  Like Patrick
did with his recent VLAN support.

The usefulness of a .so file seems to be distributing the code
outside of /bin/ip.  Although I think we currently have some issues with
mixed 32bit and 64bit systems because we have "/usr/lib/ip/link_*.so"
hard coded.

A .so file always seems to override the compiled in version so I don't
think we loose any flexibility on that front.

Actually, I want to clarify this situation.  In reality these
drivers are more consistent than different.

For some chips the cheapest way to figure out if there is more
RX work is simply to see if the amount of work processed is
less than "budget".  It's too expensive to recheck the hardware.

On some chips like tg3, it's extremely cheap to see if new work
arrived between the completion of processing the RX queue and
the NAPI completion check, so they do it.

But logically they are testing the same exact high level thing.

Yes, the comment definitely does not match the code and
should be fixed one way or the other.

I'll do some code history research to try and figure out
if this optlen==0 case ever worked properly.

The tx_cleaned logic change was not intentional, and
that's the bug that makes e1000 spin endlessly in NAPI.

The other part, the work_done < budget part, was intentional
so I'm going to keep it in there for now.  I've checked
in the patch below to deal with this.

I suspect the check "work_done == 0" is some shamans dance
to get slightly better performance, but it's 1) wrong and
2) at best needs to be explained in a comment and fully
quantified.

This can - as you can see I reallocate the name lower.

Can you please give me the exact command that caused an oops.
I try simple ip link add type veth and everything is just fine.

Let me handle this problem. AFAIR this was one of wishes from 
Patrick that we make two equal devices in case peer is not given, 
not just the default peer.

However I still think that this notitfication is redundant. I tried to look
at XORP, bird, USAGI , quagga and to see RTM_DELLINK handling. And imho
nobody depends on RTM_DELLINK message from ipv6.

I know it is problematic because we try to assign the same name
to both network devices, if we assign a name to the primary
network device.  That can't work.

Beyond that I had some really weird crashes while testing this
piece of code, especially when I did not specify a peer parameter.

So it was just easier to avoid the problem with this patch then
to completely root cause it.

I think the easiest semantic is to not have any peer parameters
if they were not specified, then to try and to figure out which
subset of parameters to copy.  If I hadn't been getting weird
kernel crashes I would not have cared.

You probably misread the code.

if (atomic_read(&svsk->sk_inuse) || test_bit(SK_BUSY, &svsk->sk_flags))
	continue;

This means: any socket where svsk->sk_inuse != 0 or SK_BUSY is set is ignored
by svc_age_temp_sockets: no attempt is made to close the svc.

This seems to be wrong: if svsk->sk_inuse is zero only if svc_delete_socket
has been called for it and will be deleted anyway (probably it is already
closed then).

But the intention of svc_age_temp_sockets is to close open temporary
sockets where no traffic has been received for more than 6 minutes. These
sockets have svsk->sk_inuse >= 1.

My patch does exactly this:

instead of

"skip sockets which are not already deleted or which are busy"

to

"skip sockets which are already deleted or which are busy"

Then svc_tcp_accept would be wrong, too (it closes sockets the same way just
without testing for sk_inuse and SK_BUSY).

I think this works because as long as a socket is in sv_tempsocks or
sv_permsocks svsk->sk_inuse can never reach zero. As svc_age_temp_sockets locks
the list nobody can bring svsk->sk_inuse to zero as long as
svc_age_temp_sockets holds the lock. As svc_age_temp_sockets calls
atomic_inc(&svsk->sk_inuse) when holding the lock there is no
problem. (the same is true for svc_tcp_accept).

This is the reason why I doubt that this check for svsk->sk_inuse in
svc_age_temp_sockets is usefull at all. It should be always false.

Thanks for looking into this.

I think the correct change is to test
		if (atomic_read(&svsk->sk_inuse) > 1 || test_bit(SK_BUSY, &svsk->sk_flags))
or even
		if (atomic_read(&svsk->sk_inuse) != 1 || test_bit(SK_BUSY, &svsk->sk_flags))

sk_inuse contains a bias of '1' until SK_DEAD is set.  So a normal,
active socket will have an inuse count of 1 or more.  If it is exactly
1, then either it is SK_DEAD (in which case there is nothing for this
code to do), or it has no users, in which case it is appropriate to
close the socket if it is old.
Note that this test is for "the socket should not be closed", so we
test if it is *not* 1, or > 1.

The tests are needed because we don't want to close a socket that
might be inuse elsewhere.  The SK_BUSY bit combined with the sk_inuse
count combine to check if the socket is in use at all or not.

You change effectively disabled the test, as sk_inuse is never <= 0
(except when SK_DEAD is set).

This bug has been present since

Commit aaf68cfbf2241d24d46583423f6bff5c47e088b3 added a bias
to sk_inuse, so this test for an unused socket now fails.  So no
sockets gets closed because they are old (they might get closed
if the client closed them).

This bug has existed since 2.6.21-rc1.

Sorry I didn't know.  Those changes are now in net-2.6.24
so installing sanitized headers should not change anything.

But if you compare this to non-NAPI driver the same softirq
overhead happens. The problem is that for many older devices disabling IRQ's
require an expensive non-cached PCI access. Smarter, newer devices
all use MSI which is pure edge triggered and with proper register
usage, NAPI should be no worse than non-NAPI.
