* [PATCH 0/6] bonding workqueue and lock rework

Following are patches to update the locking used in the bonding
driver. This involves two basic changes: conversion from timers to
workqueues for the various periodic monitor functions, and conversion of
locking. These patches should resolve the majority of locking and
might sleep related warnings that occur during certain operations.
The workqueue conversion is fairly straightforward, and
substitutes workqueue driven events for the existing timer driven events.
The locking changes are of two types: first, changes to resolve
deadlocks created by the conversion to workqueues, and second, changes to
make the locking more correct, which generally involves holding RTNL and
no other locks during specific operations. Some of the RTNL-related
changes are fairly extensive, and involve either conditional locking or
releasing and reacquiring locks in order to obey lock ordering
constraints.
These changes were developed and extensively tested by Andy
Gospodarek <andy@greyhouse.net> and myself over the last few months.
Patches are relative to linux-2.6.

Convert bonding timers to workqueues. This converts the various
monitor functions to run in periodic work queues instead of timers. This
patch introduces the framework and convers the calls, but does not resolve
various locking issues, and does not stand alone.

Convert mii (link state) monitor to acquire correct locks for
failover events. In particular, failovers generally require RTNL at a low
level (when manipulating device MAC addresses, for example) and no other
locks. The high level monitor is responsible for acquiring a known set
of locks, RTNL, the bond->lock for read and the slave_lock for write, and
the low level failover processing can then release appropriate locks as
needed. This patch provides the high level portion.
As it is undesirable to acquire RTNL for every monitor pass (which
may occur as often as every 10 ms), the miimon has been converted to
do conditional locking. A first pass inspects all slaves to determine
if any action is required, and if so, a second pass (after acquring RTNL)
is done to perform any actions (doing a complete rescan, as the situation
may have changed when all locks were released).

Interesting. After some asking around, it appears that the mv643xx
ethernet silicon block is indeed very similar to the ethernet silicon
block found the in Orion ARM SoCs.
We'll work on getting Orion to use mv643xx_eth. Thanks for pointing

Could you give a concrete example as to why it needs a smp barrier?
The test_bit is going to get a consistent result. Are you worried about
operations ordering before the test_bit()? In that case, one of those
smp_mb__before_xxx functions is probably what is needed.

test_bit is just a read, without any ordering constraint. It can thus be
totally mixed with anything before.
we want to synchronize. Basically, make sure that whatever we did before
the call is visible to whatever we are synchronizing with (NAPI poll in
our case). That is, in our case, that a previous/concurrent NAPI poll
(that hasn't seen the effect of what we did before) is complete or any
new one will have seen that effect.
thus we need a barrier. At least a read barrier semantic to avoid the
test_bit to dance around and be speculated but I think a full barrier
also making sure that any previous store is visible before we preform
the read is also necessary in pretty much any usage scenario of this
function. I believe this is also a bug in synchronize_irq and possibly
even in napi_disable(). I sent a patch for synchronize_irq() a minute
ago.
Besides, it's not like this was a hot path :-)

[BNX2]: Fix Serdes WoL bug.
The bug is in the code in bnx2_set_power_state() that assumes copper
devices when setting up WoL. This is no longer true after adding WoL
support for Serdes devices.

This might be a coding style fix, as far as I can see, but I can't
imagine how it can effect compilation at all. It just removes a space
between the "*" and "dev" but that space is harmless.
