I am not a power management expert. Looks like a BIOS issue where the
BIOS has configured the device to disable power management but the
user wants to override that value. There is no method to determine
when the BIOS is broken versus when the BIOS setting is correct and
we should follow what it says.

I'm not a power management expert either.  I was just wondering
whether the known broken BIOSes could be encoded in a blacklist or
something, because it looks like a case where a user might have to
request help or debug the problem again before discovering this flag.

Doesn't packed penalize all access to the structure on some
architectures, eg sparc?

A static assert is a better choice than packed...

That patch was good because it prevented bonds using ARP monitoring from
sending frames with an invalid source IP address.  Unfortunately, it
didn't always work as expected.

When using an ioctl (like ifconfig does) to set the IP address and
netmask, 2 separate ioctls are actually called to set the IP and netmask
if the mask chosen doesn't match the standard mask for that class of
address.  The first ioctl did not have a mask that matched the one in
the primary address and would still cause the device address to be
overwritten.  The second ioctl that was called to set the mask would
then detect as secondary and ignored, but the damage was already done.

This was not an issue when using an application that used netlink
sockets as the setting of IP and netmask came down at once.  The
inconsistent behavior between those two interfaces was something that
needed to be resolved.

While I was thinking about how I wanted to resolve this, Ralf Zeidler
came with a patch that resolved this on a RHEL kernel by keeping a full
shadow of the entries in dev->ifa_list for the bonding device and vlan
devices in the bonding driver.  I didn't like the duplication of the
list as I want to see the 'bonding' struct and code shrink rather than
grow, but liked the general idea.

As the Subject indicates this patch drops the master_ip and vlan_ip
elements from the 'bonding' and 'vlan_entry' structs, respectively.
This can be done because a device's address-list is now traversed to
determine the optimal source IP address for ARP requests and for checks
to see if the bonding device has a particular IP address.  This code
could have all be contained inside the bonding driver, but it made more
sense to me to EXPORT and call inet_confirm_addr since it did exactly
what was needed.

I tested this and a backported patch and everything works as expected.
Ralf also helped with verification of the backported patch.

Richard - Intent is to make the readers(get_time) wait (or return last
read value if the seq_counter tripped because you know that this value
was recent) and let the tx/rx path continue. I haven't looked in more
details but as Jake mentioned you will also need to change the way you
read the values(by not using timecounter_read in get_time).

It appears this feature is not available in kernel tcp implementation,
is it trivial to make a custom patch to make this feature available?
can someone give a hint on how to make a patch for this?

We had a situation that we want to make linux kernel tcp stack behave
this way so we can reproduce another issue at hand.

The driver must implement adequate locking -mostly bh or irq spinlock- if
you want to change the MTU at any time. It is possible to temporarily stop
some bh as well too, see napi_disable for instance.

net_device stats locking is a different beast.

Other than that, some serializing is already done with rules such as
"xmit happens in locally bh disabled context" or through special purpose
lock (think Tx locking).

So, yes, there are some mechanisms. However most drivers only care about
the net_device itself when it goes up or down. As soon as the net_device
is up, it won't change much behind the driver's back (nor should the driver
try to modify it much btw).

I guess that was to allow the client's ACK of the server's SYN|ACK of 
the client's SYN to be piggybacked with the client's initial request. 
Probably did nice things on either netperf TCP_CRR, or some 
connect()-heavy workload.    Probably not a good thing for those 
applications where the accept()ing side sends first...

No kernel patch is needed, you already can do this on linux.

This is what I have recommended since the alx driver was rejected, and
our team has been working on the atl1c driver now but we need to get
the legal approval to get contributions out to atl1c (I know this is
silly, but hey just letting you know).

Anyway, in the meantime another topic has creeped up, and that is to
share with BSD and also help kill proprietary drivers [0]. Me and
Adrian intend on sharing our thoughts on how we intend on doing this
at LF collab but was in hopes we can use alx as a test case. We've
gone back to the drawing board for another simple driver to test our
work against but... we come back to alx.

Would it be worthwhile to consider alx upstream only for the newer
chipsets (regardless of the litmus test, which I do agree with on
technical grounds) in consideration for helping pave the way on
killing proprietary drivers?

* [PATCH net] tg3: Fix RSS ring refill race condition

The RSS feature in tg3 hardware has only one rx producer ring for all
RSS rings.  NAPI vector 1 is special and handles the refilling of the
rx producer ring on behalf of all RSS rings.  There is a race condition
between these RSS NAPIs and the NAPI[1].  If NAPI[1] finishes checking
for refill and then another RSS ring empties the rx producer ring
before NAPI[1] exits NAPI, the chip will be completely out of SKBs in
the rx producer ring.

We fix this by adding a flag tp->rx_refill and rely on napi_schedule()/
napi_complete() to help synchronize it to close the race condition.

Update driver version to 3.123.

* [PATCH net] cnic: Fix parity error code conflict

The recently added parity error handling used an error code that was
already defined for a different error.  This could lead to bnx2x
firmware assert.  We need to fix this with new error codes that are
defined for parity error only.

Just some further information concerning my earlier question
concerning vhost and virtio.

I'm using virtio to implement an emulated mac80211 device in the
guest. A simple network simulation will be used to control delivery of
frames between guests and for this I am using the vhost approach.

A simple first-cut attempt at the tx and rx kick handlers are given
below. When the guest transmits frames the vhost's TX kick handler is
executed and copies the buffers onto a queue for the intended
recipient(s). When the vhost's RX kick handler is run it copies the
buffer from the queue and notifies the client that the buffers have
been used.

The problem is that if there are no frames in the queue when the guest
rx kick handler runs then it has to exit and I have to arrange that it
runs again. That's done in the current prototype by having the guests
poll using a timer - which is ugly and inefficient. Can I get the
vhost tx kick handler to wake the appropriate vhost rx kick handler?
How can I achieve this?
