This must be the alsa-driver or alsa-lib problem, rather than the app's
bug. I don't figure out yet...

Setting the slowptr option in dmix seems improving. I don't get noise so
far.

Could you try the attached patch, dmix-slowptr.diff? It's a patch to
alsa-lib, changing only dmix.conf config file.

As per advice from the bug on xmms I'm going to try the crossfade plugin to
do some resampling. It only supports 44100 and 48000 but I'm guessing that
with 48000 and 96000 set on dmix this wont happen...only time will tell
however.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Xero - 06-09-05 04:57

ok using crossfade and running at 48000 with dmix at 96000 still causes
distortion. Also, I tried 48000 at 88200 and distortion as well. So far
only 44100 and dmix at 88200 has no distortion. I'm guessing it might have
to do with buffer size but I'm unsure as to what value would be a large
enough increase to properly test this out. I don't want to add too much
latency...

8192 buffer size corresponds to less than 0.1 second in 88.4/96kHz. So,
the probability of XRUN is fairly high, I guess.

And, yes, the rate plugin is another cause of trouble. This requires
another transport layer which copies the data asynchronously. But the
biggest problem of the current rate plugin is that the drift of the
interrupt timing and the period position in the rate plugin buffer. Since
44.1 and 48 can't be aligned in integer, the real and virtual period sizes
conflict. This result in the irregular period updates.

Unfortunately, the problem of rate plugin above is _very_ hard to fix
(because of the principal definition of ALSA PCM).

with 48000 and 96000 set on dmix this wont happen...only time will tell

Summary: Distorted sound with enabled dmix plugin

how much bigger is much bigger? I'm running at the standard 1024/8192 for
period/buffer size. If that really is the problem then it's still odd that
this would happen at 96000 but not 88200, which is why I think it's more
related to sample rate conversion...I've attached my config file at 96000
for reference. When in 88200 the only change is just that, 88200 instead
of 96000 in the rate section.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 tiwai - 06-08-05 21:27
----------------------------------------------------------------------
8192 buffer size corresponds to less than 0.1 second in 88.4/96kHz. So,
the probability of XRUN is fairly high, I guess.

(because of the principal definition of ALSA PCM).

this doesn't happen as much with alsa 1.0.9 but still happens occasionally.
I also would get random clicks and pops which was pretty annoying by
itself. I still haven't had this issue when running at a sample rate that
is a multiple of 44100...my card is an echo mia midi btw...

hrm I should mention that I had upgraded to alsa 1.0.9 as well so that
MIGHT have been what fixed it, I see there was some commits made on the
19th. I was using 1.0.9rc3...I've switched back to 96000 and am going to
see if this happens again...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Xero - 06-03-05 07:40
----------------------------------------------------------------------
this doesn't happen as much with alsa 1.0.9 but still happens occasionally.
I also would get random clicks and pops which was pretty annoying by
itself. I still haven't had this issue when running at a sample rate that
is a multiple of 44100...my card is an echo mia midi btw...

I had this problem. It was fixed by running my card at a rate that is a
multiple of 44100. Dmix by default converts to 48000, and thus it occurs
in that case. I was running dmix at 96000, and it occured, I run it at
88200 and now it hasn't happened, well not atleast in the past day. It
seems you already have rate 44100 set though, so I suppose it's possible
we ran into different problems, unless you were playing mp3/oggs/etcs that
aren't 44100 perhaps?

btw I believe this is the same bug:

Setting the slowptr option in dmix seems improving. I don't get noise so
far.

Could you try the attached patch, dmix-slowptr.diff? It's a patch to
alsa-lib, changing only dmix.conf config file.

This must be the alsa-driver or alsa-lib problem, rather than the app's
bug. I don't figure out yet...

Patch bmp-0.9.7-alsa-fixes.patch (34,761 bytes) doesn't fix problem.
I performed 3 tests:
1. 8 instances of bmp player. One of them periodically has distorted
sound.
2. From xmms I have same problem.
3. 8 instances of aplay. I don't have any problem with sound. But I have
warnings:
Playing WAVE '01.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz,
Stereo

Did you get the similar problem on any other applications?

I still don't figure out where the problem is. It might be in my patch to
bmp...
Just to be sure, I attached the latest version of bmp patch.

Yes, this seems triggered with SMP/HT.

Anyway, could you try the attached patch with SMP/HT environment?

Also, try CVS version (with the path) instead of 1.0.8.

                rate 44100

    # bindings are cool. This says, that only the first
    # two channels are to be used by swmix, which is enough for
    # (most) oss apps and also lets multichannel chios work
    # much faster:
    bindings {
        0 0   # from 0 => to 0
        1 1   # from 1 => to 1
    }
}

I've seen similar problems only on ICH test boards around me.
The AMD machines are OK.

Are you using the patched xmms/bmp with multi-threading?
Does it happen with plug layer, too? (Give plug:dmix in the device entry
of ALSA output plugin)

I've seen similar problems only on ICH test boards around me.
The AMD machines are OK.

Are you using the patched xmms/bmp with multi-threading?
Does it happen with plug layer, too? (Give plug:dmix in the device entry
of ALSA output plugin)
