Hi everybody!
I have this problem:
I should put USB port on an older box, that has no
USB on its mainboard.
I thought about an USB PCI card, but have no any
experience with them.
Are they completely supported, or what should I
check befor buying one of them?
And the other question: how should I set it up?
(If I can use one of them)
Is it that simple, that I just have to enable USB
in the kernel? Does the kernel treats an USB PCI card
the same as an on chip USB?
If you point me to the correct documentation, it would
be enouht too.
Thanks in advance,
Akos

Here's your problem. You must have a bios on that computer that has a
date on or after July 1, 1989. If you don't have or can't get such a bios
on that machine working happily it doesn't matter what you do with any usb
technology it's simply not going to work for you. Many unethical computer
vendors were installing usb equipment before July 1999 and if the owners
of that equipment didn't manage to get their bios upgraded they still
haven't got their usb equipment working to date.

Thanks! And if the bios is newer, than this date
(I could check this only in weekend), then
there are no other problems?

Based on reading Jude's original reply, I'm almost certain that "1989" was
a typo and should read "1999". (USB was not even an idea in 1989, let alone
a BIOS feature. The original message went on to comment, "Many unethical
computer vendors were installing usb equipment before July 1999....")
Beyond that ... this should be sufficient to let the kernel's USB support
work. Whether you have "other problems" or not depends on the specific USB
devices you want to use ... an increasing number are supported by the Linux
kernel, but there's no way to know if unnamed devices are supported or not,
or what the difficulties of getting them to work might be.

Correction on that date. The bios needs to be no younger than july 1,
1999. Anything newer actually does support at least usb 1 and maybe usb
2.

Thank you.
Sadly it's date is almost certainly before july 1, 1999, but I will
check it anyway.

Hi everybody!
Finally I have an USB port!
This happened:
I searched for the date of the BIOS. The only
date I could see was a date at the bottom of the
screen, when the memory has been checked.
This was 22.06.1999 (this is before July 1. 1999),
and I became sad...
BUT I found in the BIOS an "Enable USB Support" option,
and if I enabled it, then an "Enable USB Keyboard" support!
And I became hopefull...
And then I took the machine to a serviceman, and he found
a USB port preparation on the maindboard, and put an USB
port on it.
So thanks for the advices.
I'm very happy!
Best wishes,
Akos
