I seem to have a new/different problem with booting on a Sun V880. I have
tried Debian/sarge, etch, and lenny installers, each fails. After reading
through a bit of this list, I downloaded sparc-next-2.6 via git, and
compiled a kernel (based on Debian/lenny's 2.6.26-2-sparc64 kernel
config), and it still won't boot. I also updated to the latest OpenBoot
image, hoping that would help, but I didn't see any difference.

Boot with kernel compiled from git (I have the Debian/Lenny installer boot
below this one):

sparc-next-2.6 doesn't have the bug fix, sparc-2.6 does

Ok, with sparc-2.6, I get farther. If I pull the RSC card, it actually
gets to a point where it tries to mount the root filesystem (and fails,
because I don't have one for it yet). With the RSC in, it hangs after
the following output. I have tried this with the OpenBoot console set
to both ttya and rsc-console, and passed a "console=ttyS0" each time. At
the point that the machine hangs, it locks up hard enough that sending a
break doesn't send me to an "ok" prompt.

The RSC is running the newest (2.2.3) firmware, and works ok with
Solaris 10. Suggestions?

try booting with "initcall_debug=1 ignore_level" on the kernel command line

And in the mean time you can install and test with the RSC card removed

I'll try pulling the RSC later tonight or tomorrow. Booting with the
args you specified provide this (and it hangs after the
init_per_zone_wmark_min call):

{7} ok boot gem console=ttyS0 initcall_debug=1 ignore_level
Boot device: /pci@8,600000/network@1 File and args: console=ttyS0
initcall_debug=1 ignore_level

It doesn't seem that the RSC is the problem, but I have two bad slots on
the CPU backplane (as verified by booting this on my other V880). That
V880 is installed with "2.6.26-1-sparc64" from Debian/Lenny, which
booted ok on this one when I cloned the disk (and pulled the CPU modules
from the bottom two slots). It looks like this 2.6.32-rc3 will boot,
but I can't get the onboard (sungem) ethernet to work (on either
2.6.26-1-sparc64 or 2.6.32-rc3).

What are the symptoms, link simply doesn't come up?

We made some fixes to link type detection in sungem recently, maybe we
need some more touchups to get it perfect.

Can you please post the output of "prtconf -pv" either from Linux or
Solaris on this machine?

Thanks.

It looks like it's not detecting the PHY on the fiber port properly:

I re-ran prtconf -pv under the 2.6.32-rc3 from your sparc git tree, and
have the output here (it looks like it has what you're looking for):

Linus's tree has the fix, via my net-2.6 tree, so if you use a pure
sparc-2.6 tree you won't have it.

You can thus try adding the following patch on top of your sparc-2.6
tree, or alternatively, try Linus's current tree as all the sparc
fixes have been merged there now too.

commit e54d5512b600aa0d492010436ff7eb0c9194efc1
Author: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
Date: Tue Nov 17 04:46:18 2009 -0800

    sungem: Fix Serdes detection.

We need to look for the 'shared-pins' property to get
    this right.

Based upon a patch by Hermann Lauer.

Ok. this looks like it fixes the problem with the fiber-port gem, but
the 10/100 TP gem just bounces back and forth between these messages,
and never gets link:

[ 174.260495] eth0: switching to forced 10bt
[ 194.660290] eth0: switching to forced 100bt

Ideas? It does this even with the interface not configured (down
according to ifconfig), which is kinda annoying on the console... I have
to do an "ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off" to make it stop.

This is a feature. It tries different possibilities trying to
get a link going.

I'm not to thrilled about it and it is different from how other
network drivers behave.

I'll try to find some time to take a look at this, thanks for the
report Patrick.
