Hi! I am experiencing an issue where my internal USB fingerprint
sensor enters a continuous reset loop on Linux
System Info:
Laptop Model: MSI Prestige 16 Flip AI+ C3MTG
Device info: Bus 003 Device 002: ID 27c6:6090 Shenzhen Goodix
Technology Co.,Ltd. Goodix USB2.0 MISC
Kernel Version: 7.3.0-rc2-1-cachyos-rc
Linux Distro: Arch Linux
Behavior:
The device repeatedly disconnects and reconnects. I have tried
disabling USB autosuspend via udev rules, but the reset behavior
continues
Relevant dmesg log output:

Is this a new issue with 7.3-rc kernel, or something that can be
reproduced with older kernels?

Those resets are not that frequent, often several minutes apart.
First guess is that its still somehow related to power management, and device
is reset (in resume?) to recover.

If it works on newer kernels then git bisect can help you find the offending
commit.
Enabling usb core and xhci dynamic debug could tell us more:
echo 'module xhci_hcd =p' >/sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_debug/control
echo 'module usbcore =p' >/sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_debug/control
< Reproduce issue >
Send output of dmesg
Thanks
Mathias

This issue has persisted since I performed a fresh installation of Arch Linux on this device (which is Linux kernel 7.0)

Well, these messages seem to appear only when I use this fingerprint sensor

Ok, looks like xHC (and fingerprint sensor) were suspended, and sensor reset
at resume.
Does disabling runtime suspend for xHCI and the sensor help?
After boot, as root:
echo on > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:14.0/power/control
echo on > /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-6/power/control
Thanks

Hi,
Your log looks like they work - nothing is being suspended anymore ;)
Do you have any idea what kernel driver (try lsusb -tv) or userspace
software is using this device? It's quite possible that the driver
simply requests a reset explicitly, either as a matter of routine or
to recover from some problems.
Regards,
Michal

I'm using fprint to operate this fingerprint sensor

This all sounds like some userspace driver is used.
And to me, this below looks like completely normal and successful USB2
device resume, followed by a reset initiated for unknown reason.
[ 240.364611] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: clear USB_PORT_FEAT_SUSPEND
[ 240.364612] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: PORTSC 0663

# PLS is resume, write U0
[ 240.405029] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: Set port 3-6 link state, portsc: 0x7e3, write 0x10601
[ 240.405066] usb 3-6: usb auto-resume
# reached U0 state
[ 240.405138] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: Port change event, 3-6, id 6, portsc: 0x400603
[ 240.405148] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: handle_port_status: starting usb3 port polling.
[ 240.446041] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: Get port status 3-6 read: 0x603, return 0x40103
[ 240.446119] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: clear port6 suspend/resume change, portsc: 0x603
# this would be "finish reset-resume" if one was intended
# or "retry with reset-resume" if resume failed
# see drivers/usb/core/hub.c::finish_port_resume()
[ 240.456987] usb 3-6: finish resume
[ 240.457379] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: set port reset, actual port 3-6 status = 0x791
So maybe it's just the userspace software doing it for whatever reason
on every use. Guess you could run "strace -eioctl" on this program to
see if there is USBDEVFS_RESET each time the dmesg message shows up.
Or add dump_stack() in usb_reset_device(), recompile and see what pops
up. Probably ioctl syscall at the bottom of the call stack...

Michal

I changed the hub.c code like this
int usb_reset_device(struct usb_device *udev)
{
int ret;
int i;
unsigned int noio_flag;
struct usb_port *port_dev;
struct usb_host_config *config = udev->actconfig;
struct usb_hub *hub = usb_hub_to_struct_hub(udev->parent);
dump_stack();
// remaining code
}

This process isn't touching any USB device, maybe it forks something
or talks to a daemon which does the dirty work.

The reset was requested by some "fprintd" process with PID 3544.
At any rate, it's userspace doing this for whatever random reason.
Your xhci-hcd dynamic dedug trace doesn't even hint at any USB layer
problems like bad packets, device stalling endpoints, etc.
If you want to konw why it happens, you need to dig in userspace.

Michal
