Hi all, 

This is what I want to do: guitar into the line input on the live drive,
that going into ardour, through a few ladspa effects, and out to the
speakers.  I can't seem to do this.  The only way I seem to be able to
get the input into ardour is to have it going through the speakers as
well so that both the input and the ladspa-processed output can be
heard.  I only want the ladspa-processed output.  Is this possible? 

I've had a search through the alsa-devel, alsa-user and ardour-devel
archives, as well as the alsa wiki and a google search.  I am yet to be
enlightened.  The SB-Live-mixer.txt is a probably a nice set of notes if
you're a driver writer, but I'm not.

What's the ADC capture FIFO?  What's the standard capture PCM device? 
What have these to do with recording from hw:0,0?  Why is it that ardour
only seems to be able to hear the line input when I put up the volume on
"Line LiveDrive" and not "Line LiveDrive Capture"?  What is the
"Capture" device sitting in alsamixer?  What difference does the little
red "Capture" make above the sliders in alsamixer? 

If it's not possible to this with only the sblive, I have the
motherboard's "soundcard" as well but how do I get jackd to deal with
more that one bit of hardware?  

I hope somebody can help as I'm utterly confused.

That will give you some info about using alsamixer correctly.

While you are there might as well read the ardour howto also which could 
(I hope) make things clearer for you. That's assuming you haven't done 
so already.

sure. assuming we're talking stereo:

add 2 routes (*without* diskstreams)
set the inputs to "in 1" and "in 2" respectively (from the mixer window)
set the outputs to "out 1" and "out 2" respectively (from the mixer window)
add the desired plugins to each route
listen ...

before you do all this, however, you need to have set up the line
input as the capture source. that's an sblive specific issue on which
i have no knowledge whatsoever.

you will also probably want to turn down the line-in level, so that
the direct feed is not audible. that is also an sblive issue. 

ALSA has a correctly designed mixer API to reflect the true
capabilities of various mixing hardware, but the vast differences
between audio interfaces and the lack of a standard ("every card must
provide the following mixer controls if it provides any at all") makes
this stuff much harder than it should be. or so it seems from reading
messages to the list.

it controls which sources are being used for capture *by the
hardware*. they should be over the relevant sources in alsamixer.

jackd -d alsa -d hw:N

where N is the relevant card number for the motherboard audio
interface.

Getting ardour to be able to record/modify the incoming sound isn't the
issue.  It's getting ardour to do that without it going through the
speakers beforehand.  I don't want to hear any sound if I put the mixer
slider down to nothing in ardour.  At the moment, I hear the original,
clean guitar signal.  I assume the line input is getting routed to both
jack's alsa_pcm inputs and the soundcard's amp.  I want it only to go to
jack, and then the ladspaified signal to the amp afterwards.

It's, unfortunately, the only issue :/

Err.. I mean have *both* cards in jack.  I have a ~/.asoundrc with
"platinum51" and "via" devices defined.  I normally do "jackd -d alsa -d
platinum51".  Doing "jackd -d alsa -d platinum51 -d via" makes it only
use the via card.  How can I tell it to use both?

I wish I knew the answers to your questions. This is just to let folks
know there has been a page ready for some time to help with these controls
but it needs a bit of input...

the emu10k1 has three different capture pcm devices: from ac97, mic
and fx.  well, callint as "ac97" is not exactly correct.  but
anyway,the "standard" capture pcm refers to the first one.

on emu10k1, the signals from ac97 are routed to the capture fifo and
then you can record them.  in addition, you can route other sources
and mix them to this capture fifo.  the switch shown above does this.
if these switches are on, then the signals from livedrive are routed
and mixed with the signals from ac97 (if enabled).

there are another switches, "Line LiveDrive Playback Volume".
this will route the input of livedrive to the DAC, i.e. you'll hear 
the sounds from front speakers.
i guess, these switches are still turned on, in your case.

Something appears to be going wrong, then, as I've still not got stuff
being recorded while the "Line LiveDrive" (in alsamixer, which appears
to correspond to the "Line LiveDrive Playback" in amixer) is not turned
up.  The amixer output that is attached doesn't record what's going into
the line-in.  In fact, the only way that I can get stuff to be recorded
from the line-in is to turn up the line-in playback and turn on capture
on the "Mix" device (whatever that is.)  The amixer output for that
setup is also attached.

Having eventually compiled alsa from cvs, I hoped maybe this problem had
been solved.  It's still there :(  To recap, I'm setting the livedrive line to
capture, putting the linedrive line capture level right up and the livedrive
line level right down, putting the ac97 capture level right up and setting the
"Capture" thingy (whatever that is) to capture and putting its level right up.
It does NOT capture the livedrive line.  From what was said before, it
should be.  The output of amixer is attached, so as there's no ambiguity.

I sincerely hope this can be fixed.

Thanks. I don't see the problem at first glance. Are you trying to capture 
signal from LiveDrive line #1?

Could you follow these steps?

Please, turn everything off (volumes and mute controls). And type 
this command:

amixer sset 'Line LiveDrive',0 capture 100 cap

It should be sufficient. If not, it might be that we have some different 
names for EMU10K1 inputs. Then could you try these commands 
(simultaneously, if input works, try determine the right one)?

amixer sset 'Line LiveDrive',1 capture 100 cap
amixer sset 'IEC958 TTL',0 capture 100 cap
amixer sset 'Zoom Video',0 capture 100 cap
amixer sset 'IEC958 Optical' capture 100 cap
amixer sset 'IEC958 Coaxial' capture 100 cap
amixer sset 'Line LiveDrive' capture 100 cap

AC'97 controls should be off. There's none connection between AC'97 
and these inputs. Good luck.

You may try: snd_extin=0x3fff and try set Zoom Video and IEC958 TTL 
controls again to verify, if signal is not there.

how about to give a model module parameter (preferably in string),
such like

	options snd-emu10k1 model="5.1"

and set the extin/out masks inside ?
