Hi all.
I'm trying to install Xenomai on my pc.
To do that I'm following this guide
http://www.captain.at/xenomai-2.1-installation.php
I'm using Kubuntu 6.6, linux-2.6.17 kernel and xenomai-2.2.0
I have runned the script prepare-kernel.sh with the correct option as in
README.INSTALL
Everything go well untill I reboot the system, then I have those errors
Uncompressing Linux... ok, booting the kernel
MP-BIOS bug 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
Xenomai: incompatible timer mode(aperiodic found, need aperiodic)
Xenomai: VxWorks skin init failed code -16
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknow
-block(0,0)
Someone can give me an help? where I can found an official installation
guide
(Sorry for my bad english)

I had similar problems installing xenomai when I had seperate / and /boot
partitions. When I configured the system with no /boot partition, it work
fine.

I guess this this is a typo, isn't it? I would expect "periodic" here.

The VxWorks skin requires periodic timer mode. If you don't plan to use
it, drop it from the kernel config . If you do want it, either set
CONFIG_XENO_OPT_TIMING_PERIOD to some reasonable value (see also the
related kernel-config help), or turn the nucleus into a module and pass
the period via the module parameter "tick_arg" when insmod'ing
xeno_nucleus later.

Good that someone read the real error...
Was this issues related to Xenomai or the Adeos patch? Or were there
just some drivers missing in the kernel directly or initfs?
It is typically fine to derive the Xenomai kernel .config from an
existing one (e.g. that your your distro), just switching of the
features listed as problematic.

When you configure your kernel, watch out for Xenomai->Timing->"Use
periodic timer hardware" and "Time period". However, I guess this will
not solve the other issue.

The setup I'm using is ubuntu 6.06 on an Athlon XP 2100+. As to whether
it was adeos or xenomai that causes/caused the error I can't say. I
compiled the kernel using the ubuntu kernel configuration as a base and
enabling periodic timer support. When the system had grub installed on a
separate boot partition, I got that same error when trying to boot from
the xenomai version of the kernel. However, when there was no boot
partition, the system booted just fine. I used the same .deb in both
cases, so that was the only difference in setup.
Consequently, when the system had a separate boot partition but period
timer support was not enabled, it also booted just fine. However, I need
the timer for my work so that wasn't particularly useful for me.

Are you sure the attached config matches the real system? It has the
timer tick set to 1 ns(!), so your box should rather lock up on boot.

You need to build the native and POSIX skins as modules, so that they do
not override the timing mode (they both request aperiodic mode to the
nucleus, which conflicts with the VxWorks skin initializing after them).

boot into periodic mode.

That is the point: all skins are going to use the periodic mode, but not
all applications are able to handle this. E.g. the latency test will
force the timing to oneshot using rt_timer_setmode(), but the cyclic
test won't, so you end up with funky results such as multi-ms latencies
with the latter, albeit the real figure - would the timing mode be
aperiodic as assumed - should be a handful of us. In the same vein,
running the latency test first, then VxWorks's satch demo on your config
would break the box, since the latter does not force the timing mode
back to periodic (actually, there is even no interface to do so, except
linking the VxWorks app against the native lib to get rt_timer_setmode).
Having all skins as modules (RTDM included) is the way to go whenever
using oneshot and periodic modes alternately depending on the loaded
application is required. This way, the timer is shut off upon skin
unloading, which prevents any conflict and makes sure that the next skin
will obtain the required mode. I'm not saying that such approach is
intuitive though, but only that it voids a fair number of potential
issues.
Of course, if only VxWorks is needed, then one just needs to disable the
other skins, which would also solve the issue the eager way.

That all sounds a bit fragile configuration-wise, also given that native
and posix skins are on by default and that you can enable vxworks
without having to switch on periodic timer support (BTW, are the other
legacy RTOS skins with this dependency?).
I would suggest to enforce the later and maybe enhance the timer
initialisation interface in a way that a user/skin can request to lock
the mode if it only supports one. Than the latency test should fail to
start, thus indicating a wrong usage. Or we "hack" periodic support over
aperiodic mode, but that's a different topic.

Yes. Most of traditional RTOSes deal with periodic ticks.

source of fragility, which does not buy us anything now that we have a
scalable aperiodic timer management code.

... which need not mean it's a bad idea. Basically, it is one property
of the Kconfig system. Granted, a modification of xnpod_start_timer may
be skipped if we go the way below.

It sounds a bit complicated. vxworks emulator can run over aperiodic
mode directly: the only requirement is to use tickRateGet() instead of
assuming that this function always returns 100. I guess the same goes
for other emulators.
