Hi,
This morning I get this bad news.
I beleive that this is a moment when Hans need help. So, if someone
is close to San Francisco
and Bay area, I think is a good move, visit him and ask him for
help, money, food, etc.
Just some words are a great help.
About the trouble, at first is not my problem, but like an immigrant
generally when people
are in troubles, back to the most stable place. I simply think that
Hans's wife back to
Russia, for troubles. Troubles that are personal between them, like
a family, and is not
our business.
Again, locate Hans and offer comfort and a path to leave this situation.
Thanks,
Giovanni.

sure, it is opensource after all :)
Question is, if it is going to be community effort ?
I guess guys in .ru and area are getting paid for it, so what's now ?

I would instead hope Nina is found and both can be reunited with their
kids. The question if reiser4 will continue is IMHO a bit insensitive
when compared to the situation they are in.

Thanks Toby.
If this is the case we can simply pray for him that the true come up
(wherever is) and the matter get solved softly
and in peace.

Amen to that.
"I hope reiser4 development still continues despite this..." is a pretty
stupid thing to say.

Yes, I must apologize for that to Hans and everybody else. Amazing how
disconnected one can become. I must say that it has been kind of you to
only term me as a bit insensitive.

Not a competition and I only wanted to bring up the human aspect of the
situation. And it was also not meant as an accusations. I understand
this may have sounded like it was but it was not. So sorry Christopher
if I made you feel I was accusing you.
Please continue the technical discussion but as David said: "I want to
hear from Hans. We can leave the gossiping to Slashdot; I'd rather not
talk behind his back, or try to guess what he wants."

Sorry but did he die or get convicted? No but people are a 1000 steps
ahead of the current situation. So before speaking about his legacy
and/or how to continue, let things take it's course and see where it leads.

It would actually be a good example in favor of FOSS. Proprietary
software usually disappear with the company, FOSS does not. But this is
totally off-topic.

We are human being first (and not claiming other people are not !) and
*my* first thought is with Hans, Nina and especially with their kids. As
they will get the biggest hit from the whole situation regardless of
what happens next. I feel it is inappropriate to talk about these things
while nothing is certain yet.IF and only IF it turns out badly in the
end a discussion can be started about what will happen with reiser4.
Until then this subject should not be discussed IMHO.
I tried to be very mild and objective in my response and if it was not,
my apologies.
Best
Sander
PS: I will not debate this any further. I have made clear how I feel
about this and what my opinion is.

Hans would be wise not to discuss anything about this case with anyone
other than his lawyer. Especially not publicly.
Divorces are messy and the media often gets things wrong. Who knows
what's true.

It would seem that the establishment of a legal defence fund is going to be

Let's not jump to conclusions', and wait and see as to how the things
shape up. People first, and technology later - I sincerely wish that
the Reiser family comes out of these bad times pretty soon.

"Even his lawyer can't see him" is the sort of thing that only happens
in 3rd world countries with shaky grasp on human rights.
Of course, this *is* the US, so maybe in fact Hans isn't being allowed

I will try to reach his mother and ask what can be done there.
At this moment there is
$25 Gets You
an Answer <http://www.namesys.com/support.html>
at our webpage, but i'm not sure at this moment if its a good idea to use
this
since Hans most likely cant manage this account, being under arrest.
Thanks guys.

Let's try to help in a practical way. It would be important to try to
find out (ideally from Hans, or someone who has spoken to him recently
or close to him) what help he needs. The people who may know most about
the situation are probably his parents, but I am not sure that we can
disturb them, they must have other worries than to talk to us. Has
anyone from Namesys or anyone on this list spoken to them recently? It
is probably best if only one person tries to get in touch. All we
should try to find out if there is anything we can try to help with.
(Probably no other information should be made public anyway.)
Toby Thain wrote:

Has anyone actually checked that this is in fact true.
According to news reports, Hans is held in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

Could someone try to find out for certain?

I am a user of Hans Reiser's latest software, and am therefore concerned for
and about him as a fellow human being in his current circumstances.
I'd just like to ask a few questions, and would be very grateful if you would
be so kind as to tell me:
1) Is there a need for the establishment of a legal defence fund?
2) Can I take it that the delay between his arrest and the date set for him to
plead is an indication that a serious professional effort is being made to
ensure that he is in fact psychiatrically fit to plead?
I ask this question simply because some of his public writings would indicate
that at times the state of Hans's mind hovers directly over the line which
separates true genius from insanity.
3) I'm not American so I would like to know if capital punishment still used
in California?
4) Is Hans currently able to receive postal mail or e-mail? If so what is his
address please?
5) Is he in need of any small items for his physical comfort?
If you would care to tell all Hans's user and development community what the
situation is then an e-mail to:-
reiserfs-list@namesys.com
which I believe is still working, would get to us all.
In any case I would be grateful for a reply to my own address:-
csawtell@paradise.net.nz
Many thanks.
ps Please would you be kind enough - with appropriate subtlety - to let all
the various law enforcement people concerned know that what they are doing is
being watched carefully by people all over the world.

Sincerely etc.,
Christopher Sawtell
