[PATCH] fix extern inline errors with gcc 4.3.0

[Benny Halevy]

gcc 4.3.0 needs -funit-at-a-time for extern inline functions
otherwise it doesn't find their body.

For example:
$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.3.0 20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8)

/usr0/export/dev/bhalevy/git/linux-pnfs-bh-nfs41/fs/buffer.c: In function ‘alloc_page_buffers’:

Fix follows the lines of commit 22eecde2f9034764a3fd095eecfa3adfb8ec9a98
that was reverted by commit c0a18111e571138747a98af18b3a2124df56a0d1,
just limiting the flag for pre- gcc 4.3.0 rather than 4.0.

I don't know what was the root cause for the crash you mentioned.
FWIW, with these options UML/x86_64 builds on Fedora 9, w/ gcc 4.3.0
and runs well for me.

-fno-unit-at-a-time flag with the proposed patch.

That said, this option or the lack of it ought not to cause any
runtime crashes.  If it does, I'd feel much more comfortable to know
exactly what the root cause is before deciding to use the flag to
workaround^hide it.

The constraints on [no-]unit-at-a-time that I see are:
	i386 uses no-unit-at-a-time for pre-4.0 (not 4.3)
	x86_64 uses unit-at-a-time always

	Uli reported a crash on x86_64 with gcc 4.1.2 with unit-at-a-time
	Ingo reported a gcc internal error with gcc 4.3 with
no-unit-at-a-time 
	You are seeing extern inlines not resolved with gcc 4.3 with
no-unit-at-a-time 

I'm tempted to follow x86 on this, with the results that
	extern inlines should be fine
	Ingo's gcc crash should not reappear
	Uli's crash may reappear

If that crash does come back, I'd say we should just debug it.  It's
likely UML implicitly relying on some gcc behavior anyway.

Hmm, arch/um/Makefile includes $(srctree)/$(ARCH_DIR)/Makefile-$(SUBARCH)
before add -fno-unit-at-a-time to KBUILD_CFLAGS.
Will this override the flag set first here?

The only gcc versions that ever supported unit-at-a-time without 
enabling it by default was some patched gcc 3.3 that included a
backport of unit-at-a-time to gcc 3.3.

Just as a note that I doubt this matters in practice today.

The only gcc versions that ever supported unit-at-a-time without

Well, I'm seeing the crash in stock 2.6.26.  For the moment I'm reverting

I tried to build a UML 2.6.26 kernel on Debian (32-bit) and ran into the 
same problem reported here http://marc.info/?t=121011533500002&r=1&w=2. 
  If I use gcc 4.3 everything works fine, but if I use gcc 4.1 or 4.2, 
UML crashes on startup.  I changed the gcc version check to 0430 and 
both 4.1 and 4.2 compiled kernels worked fine.

Also, is there any chance of getting a SKAS4 patch against 2.6.26?  I 
was trying to test it against 2.6.25.10 and had some strange issues.  I 
was running Debian Etch inside VMWare with a 2.6.25.10 SKAS4-enabled 
kernel.  When I tried to start up a UML instance from root or a non-root 
account I was getting the same problem reported here..

weird part is if I started UML via sudo from a non-root account I'd get 
a segfault somewhere in libc but then UML would boot up into a working 
Linux environment saying SKAS4 was enabled.  Was hoping to try and test 
it some more on a newer kernel if there's a patch available.

It's really 2.6.26, and not something from a day or two earlier?  I
fixed the compilation bugs, supposedly, just before 2.6.26.

If the crash says ptrace in it, then I'm currently trying to figure
out what's happening with that.

Yeah, it's a vanilla 2.6.26, and when comparing it to 2.6.26-rc9 the 
only difference in arch/um was the change for no-unit-at-a-time.

It's crashing in wait_stub_done just like the poster of the message was 
having, it appears gcc 4.1 and 4.2 need -fno-unit-at-a-time.

OK, I misunderstood - I thought you were saying you got compilation
errors, rather than crashes.  Hence my incredulity, since that patch
was supposed to fix the compile errors.

Well, we need to figure out why the initcalls aren't happening with
-unit-at-a-time and some versions of gcc.

It's been seen on both i386 and x86_64.  Initially, it was x86_64.  I
couldn't reproduce it here despite having the same environment and
