[ath9k-devel] dwa-547 very slow

Hi,
I'm trying a d-link dwa-547 with ath9k, using

-2.6.28-rc6
-2.6.28
-2.6.28-rc6 with last compat-wireless
-2.6.28 with last compat-wireless

I can reach a throughput of just 1MB/s. (8mbps) In windows I can reach 7MB/s
(56mbps), but I use a 10/100 eth so it can go higher...
Why? maybe because the card associates in g only mode?

Some suggestions?

ok, I've made some more tests.
I discovered that if I use 20 Mhz frequency instead of "20/40" frequency,
the speed raises, about 3MB/s from router to the card. Is it a known
problem?

Here is a screenshot of throughput speed using iperf:

Also if I try to transfer data from the card to the router, I get a kernel
panic.

sorry, this happens with "20/40 Mhz" frequency only

What AP are you using? This could be a compatibilty issue. Are you using encryption? If so what type?

Can take a picture of the oops message? Please try running in the console to be able to capture
these. You can try increasing the size of the screen using something like vga=791 to use
the frame buffer. If all else fails you can try the nmi watchdog.

hmm, your benchmarks for 20/40 mode in linux are similar to mine in
throughput.  i'll put my router in 20-only mode this eve when i get home
and see if i can get better transfer rates.

Now if I could just get my cards to maintain IP connectivity when large
files are transferred!  luis, any luck reproducing my problems?  i can
give you ssh access to either of my boxes if you need it 8-).

you are asking about a separate issue on a different thread from which
I cannot easily pull your distribution info, kernel version, AP used, etc,
but whatever, lets hijack this thread and abuse it to talk about your issue,
I'm lazy to switch to the other one.

FWIW I am able to reproduce loss of connectivity after a large file transfer
on Ubuntu "2.6.27-9" which happens to be "2.6.27.2" actually so I'm upgrading
to 2.6.27-11 which is only available on intrepid-updates. To get this I had to add:

# Ubuntu proposed changes
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-proposed main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-proposed main restricted

to my /etc/apt/sources.list and then I apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic

About to give that a spin to see how it goes. This is 2.6.27.10 based. You want
at least a 2.6.27.8 based kernel if you are using ath9k as there were a few critical DMA
patches that went in there.

If you are experiencing issues as you mention on 2.6.28 then you need at least
2.6.28.1 as it has the patch, "ath9k: enable RXing of beacons on STA/IBSS", which
should fix the issue.

If you are using 2.6.29 then please let us know.

I was using 2.6.27 as 2.6.28 was giving me a 32KB/s max transfer rate. 
I'll try 2.6.28.1 and report back to you.

Lets address issues one at a time, you should not face througput issues on 2.6.28
if you are then its a bug! If its something we can fix we can try to merge it for 2.6.28
but it requires a lot of driver changes most likely your best bet is to use wireless-testing
or compat-wireless. Please see our guide on how to get the latest ath9k driver [1].

I'm not using any encryption.

I've noticed that the kernel panic happens only if I launch iperf on ssh
(strange). If I launch it from keyboard I don't get any kernel panic.

btw, here are some (bad quality) photos of the kernel panic. I don't know
how to copy it in other ways...

You have described a lot of different kernel versions you have tried
this on, you also mentioned using compat-wireless. What kernel was
this for? Did you use compat-wireless. If you have debugging enabled
on your kernel please run the following:

gdb drivers/net/wireless/ath9k/ath9k.ko

Then on the gdb console please run:

l *(ath_tx_complete_aggr+0x201)

And put the message here. I am not sure if that is 0x201 or 0x208 or
something else.. its not easy to determine from that picture. Anyway

Along with what Luis has described above, please load ath9k as
'modprobe ath9k debug=0x00002000', associate to your AP, store the dmesg log
in a file, and then run iperf to reproduce the crash. And please the post the log
here.

throughput.  I was hoping you had solved one of my throughput issues,
Xaero!  No luck tho.  Good idea, though!
