            Bug ID: 221569
Summary: Laptop fan too loud (spinning nearly always) hp-wmi
                    7.1-rc4 kerenel
           Product: Drivers
           Version: 2.5
          Hardware: All
                OS: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: Platform_x86
          Assignee: drivers_platform_x86@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
          Reporter: moravec@ukf.sk
        Regression: No

Hello, I'm testing 7.1 kernel tree end seeing much louder fan on my laptop even
when system is idling. CPU fan is spinning nearly all the time even CPU
reported temperatures are low. Currently:

migo@migo-HP:~$ uname -a
Linux migo-HP 7.1.0-rc4-00685-g4cbfe4502e3d #45 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun May 24
12:47:18 CEST 2026 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In 7.0 kernel tree is my laptop much quieter, fan spins only sometimes and with
lower RPM.

Machine is: HP OmniBook X Flip Laptop 16-ar0xx, with Arch Linux installed.

Is there any way I can make more exact/useful report or debug this issue?

Thank you!

I've no idea, but you could bisect:

https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/bug-bisect.html

to speed up the process of identifying the bad commit and fixing the
regression.

OK, thank you, I'll wait for final 7.1 and then when not fixed I'll do
bisection. Is it OK?

Well, then a lot more people might run into this (depending on how many
machines this affects), unless somebody else runs into the problem and fixes
it. But I haven't seen any similar reports. So waiting might just delay things
and broaden the impact.

Can you maybe share the full dmesg from 7.0 and one from 7.1-rc, too?

Yes, you can. I've tried do switch Power mode to Powersave (via Gnome menu) to
lower/disable FAN RPMs and got this error in dmsg:

jún 01 09:34:30 migo-HP kernel: platform_profile: Failed to get profile for
handler hp-wmi

but this is error is present in 7.0 too, so this is not new in 7.1 tree.

load is low:

All temperatures are low BUT wifi module reports: temp1: +82.0°C, I don't know

that's odd; is the wifi temp high with a working kernel, too? And could you try
to block the wifi driver from loading to see if it makes a difference?

I'll try with 7.0 tree after the work. I'm using wifi as only net connection,
so blacklisting is not a good idea here.

Just now is reported wifi temp. OK:

mt7925_phy0-pci-6200
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +47.0°C

But FAN is still 2100RPM :(

load is low:

migo@migo-HP:~$ w
 10:29:37 up 2:37, 1 user, load average: 0,19, 0,25, 0,25

Please also check if the CPU is using the sleep modes (powertop might be one
tool for that) and running in the low frequencies when idle, just to be sure;
afterwards I'll forward this to the hp-wmi maintainer

it seems that enabling Power save mode triggers that high temp. on wifi module:

mt7925_phy0-pci-6200

mt7925_phy0-pci-6200

Please really try once with blacklisting the wifi module. It seems this is
reproducible easily for you, so maybe a few minutes without wifi should suffice
to detect if that makes a difference.

Unfortunately wifi module temp is not reported in 7.0 tree, other temps. seems
to be in line with 7.1 measurements. But FAN is not starting so often like is
doing in 7.1 tree. Will try to blacklist wifi driver after the work, but it
will not be real test, because my work (load) is based on online work an I'll
be offline than.

OK, temperature reading from wifi module is implemented, but bugy, it is
reporting actual temp only after some/random reloading not after every
reading.

mt7925_phy0-pci-6200
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +43.0°C

mt7925_phy0-pci-6200
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +45.0°C

When value it is displayed, it shows much lower temp. than on 7.1 tree, IDK if
it is reliable reading now with this erratical behavior.

I've tried with mt76 module blacklisted. Hard to compare, but FAN started to
spin with cpu temp 41 deg.C and no load, only system booted and terminal

Seems to be solved into the road to rc7 so closing this report. Maybe caused by
AMD patches for this platform.

Thank you!

Let me know :)
Unfortunately I hadn't a proper hp to test it out: it worked on a simulated
virtme-ng machine but ofc it's quite differente compared to a real one.

But I cant resume from hibernation now :( migo-HP kernel: Hibernate

removing swap, recreating it doesn't helped. :(

The problem you are reporting is not directly correlated to my patch.

It's introduced by f5d1499ae209 ("PM: hibernate: x86: Use crc32 instead of md5
for hibernation e820 integrity check"), in particular the lines below:

if (rdr->e820_checksum != compute_e820_crc32(e820_table_firmware)) {
        pr_crit("Hibernate inconsistent memory map detected!\n");
        return -ENODEV;
}

This means that the memory map (E820 table) presented by your UEFI
firmware/bootloader during the resume boot is different from the one recorded
when the hibernation image was created.

The hp-wmi driver has nothing to do with it: the e820_table_firmware is
populated very early during boot in arch/x86/kernel/setup.c by the setup_arch()
function, long before hp-wmi is even loaded, and hp-wmi does not modify it.

Hmmm. but why it worked fine before truing your patch and not after :) probably
coincidence, I've got GPU gang before during resume (black screen) maybe that
crash broke something else.

I'm compiling with hibernation patch now. Thank you very much for your help!
Will report back.

I thank you so much! It works again! Do you know what is this?

Regarding the message: hp_wmi: Unknown event_id - 131073 - 0x0

This event ID (131073 is 0x20001 in hex) is a standard notification sent by the
HP ACPI firmware during power state transitions (such as waking up from
suspend/hibernation or plugging/unplugging a USB-C charger). Since the hp-wmi
driver doesn't have a specific handler for this event, it falls back to
printing this diagnostic message. It is harmless log noise and can be safely
ignored.

As for the GPU hangs (amdgpu), they are unrelated to this WMI event. As said
before WMI events are handled entirely within the platform driver space,
whereas the GPU hangs are driver/firmware issues inside the amdgpu stack (often
related to power management or dynamic power states on newer AMD platforms).

Thank you for clarification, AWESOME work and support!

Don't you have by hand patches for custom FAN curve or setting trigger
temperature for FAN to make this laptop more quiet? :))) CPU temp is 39 deg.C
and FAN still spinning at 2100RPM. All other temps under 40 deg.C too, only
WIFI module is reporting high temp, but this is garbage probably.

--- Comment #32 from Marco Scardovi (scardracs@disroot.org) ---
Regarding the custom FAN curve or trigger temperatures:

On your laptop, the fan speed is controlled by the ACPI thermal subsystem
directly (acpi_fan-isa-0000 is reporting the 2100 RPM), while hp-wmi
(hp-isa-0000) reports 0 RPM because manual fan control interface is not exposed
by HP firmware on generic non-gaming (non-Omen/Victus) models.

Looking at your sensors output, the MediaTek WiFi card (mt7925) is reporting a
temperature of +86.0°C. Modern thin-and-light laptop firmware (Embedded
Controller) often monitors multiple sensors (CPU, NVMe, WiFi, and skin
sensors). If the WiFi card or NVMe SSD is hot, the BIOS/EC will keep the fan
spinning at a low RPM (like 2100 RPM) to cool the chassis, even if the CPU is
idling at 39°C.

You can inspect which ACPI thermal zone is triggering the active cooling by
running:

> tail /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/type
> tail /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp

Since the platform profile driver is now working correctly, you should try
switching it to quiet or low-power (if available on your model) using
powerprofilesctl set quiet. This is the official way to tell the EC/BIOS to use
a quieter fan curve and adjust the trip point thresholds.

--- Comment #34 from Marco Scardovi (scardracs@disroot.org) ---
The output shows that you have a single ACPI thermal zone (acpitz) running at
38°C (38000).

The reason the fan is still spinning at 2100 RPM is that the BIOS has
configured a very low active cooling thresholds (trip points). For example, the
threshold to turn on the fan at its lowest speed might be set to 30°C or 35°C.
Since 38°C is above that threshold, the fan stays on.

To confirm this, you can check your ACPI trip point temperatures by running:

> cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_*_temp
> cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_*_type

Since you now have 'power-saver', 'balanced', and 'performance' profiles
working, try switching to the power saver profile:

> powerprofilesctl set power-saver

Under the power-saver profile, the BIOS/EC should increase the temperature
thresholds (e.g. from 35°C to 45°C or 50°C), which should allow the fan to turn
off completely when the system is idling at 38°C.

--- Comment #36 from Marco Scardovi (scardracs@disroot.org) ---
Thanks for the details.

Looking at the trip points for acpitz, there are only critical, hot, and
passive thresholds, but no active trip points. This confirms that the OS
thermal subsystem has no direct control over the fan via ACPI tables; the fan
is controlled entirely by the Embedded Controller (EC) firmware.

Even with the CPU idling at 37°C, the MediaTek WiFi 7 card (mt7925) is still
running very hot at 79°C. In many modern designs, the EC will keep the fan
spinning at a minimum speed (2100 RPM in your case) if any monitored component
(like the WiFi module or NVMe) is hot, to prevent localized heat build-up.

To test if the WiFi module is indeed the one triggering the fan, you can try
this quick test:

Block/disable WiFi and Bluetooth completely:

> sudo rfkill block all

Wait a few minutes (with the system idle) to see if the mt7925 temperature
drops.
Check sensors again to see if the WiFi temp drops and if the fan under acpi_fan
slows down or turns off.
If the fan turns off, it confirms the fan is triggered by the WiFi card's idle
temperature. (You can re-enable it later with sudo rfkill unblock all).

Additionally, you can check if you have any exposed ACPI cooling devices in
sysfs:

> tail /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/type
> tail /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state

Sometimes you can read the current fan state there, though the EC usually
overrides any manual changes to cur_state.

Another suggestion I can give you, if you feel confident enough, it to open the
chassis and check for dust around the WiFi module.

Thank you, laptop is 5 month old, and it is clean. That high temps. are
strange. There is not always that high temp. on that device, net connection is
not heavily used, only some web pages and some ssh sessions to remote hosts.
Why is that temp so high? :(

Will try without WIFI, but that is the only one net connection on this device,
so not really useful without net connection. :)

Please check if ALPM is enabled or disabled under LnkCtl

> sudo lspci -vv -s 62:00.0 | grep -i aspm

Note: 62:00.0 is the PCI address of your mt7925 card.

BTW disabling the WiFi with rfkill is only meant as a temporary 5-minute test
just to verify this theory. If the temperature drops to <50°C and the fan turns
off after blocking it, we know for sure where the problem lies.

--- Comment #40 from Marco Scardovi (scardracs@disroot.org) ---
That is a great improvement! 52°C is a very healthy idle temperature for a WiFi
7 module under Linux.

Your lspci output shows that ASPM L1 and the ultra-low-power L1.1/L1.2
sub-states are correctly enabled on the PCIe link.

The powertop auto-suspend option you noticed is for the Bluetooth component of
the MediaTek card (which operates over USB). Enabling USB autosuspend and PCIe
power tuning via Powertop is often what allows the card to finally enter these
low-power states, explaining the drop from ~80°C to 52°C.

Now that the WiFi temperature has dropped to 52°C:

1. Has the fan slowed down or turned off completely?
2. Did you use powertop --auto-tune or manually toggle the power savings?

Those settings are there from beginning on (from session login), not changed
anything recently. Sometimes is 45 and sometimes is temp. 80 C deg. with the
same usage... no changes at all. hmmm. IDK. Will try disabling it later, and
will report back. Thank you for your 1st class help! :)

fan is the same.
powertop ia manually enabled.

--- Comment #43 from Marco Scardovi (scardracs@disroot.org) ---
Since all your temperatures are now very low (CPU at 39.9°C, WiFi at 49°C, NVMe
at 37.9°C, GPU at 38°C) but the fan is still spinning at 2100 RPM, there are
two likely explanations I can think of:

1. HP BIOS "Fan Always On" Setting [1]: HP laptops commonly have a BIOS option
called "Fan Always On" (usually under System Configuration or Power settings).
When enabled (which is often the default, especially when plugged into AC
power), the motherboard firmware will keep the fan spinning constantly, even if
the laptop is freezing cold. It will only ramp up when hot, but will never
stop.
2. BIOS Thermal Hysteresis: Firmwares use a cooling hysteresis window to
prevent the fan from constantly pulsing on and off. For example, the fan might
trigger at 55°C but will only turn off once the system cools down below 35°C or
30°C. If your idle baseline is around 37-40°C, it might stay just above the
cutoff threshold.

Thank you! Fan Always On is disabled in BIOS, that was the first thing I've
done. :) Than it is the BIOS Thermal Hysteresis, but that can't be changed. :(
