* [LARTC] BGP and shaping
From: zain arrifa'i @ 2002-10-27 12:15 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: lartc

how can we do to assign flows in the shaping rules to
an AS number in BGP routing? I want to allocate some
of my bandwidth for the local internet exchange, which
is BGP routed.

* New nanosecond stat patch for 2.5.44
From: Andi Kleen @ 2002-10-27 12:13 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-kernel

Move time_t members in struct stat to struct timespec and allow subsecond
timestamps for files. Too big to post on the list, because it edits
a lot of file systems and drivers in a straight forward way.

This is required for reliable "make" on fast computers.

File systems that support nsec storage are currently: XFS, JFS, NFSv3
(if the filesystem on the server supports it), VFAT (not quite nanosecond),
CIFS (unit in 100ns which is above what linux supports), SMBFS (for
newer servers)

This is proposed for 2.6.

Changes against the last version:
- Now always take xtime_lock when accessing the whole of xtime
- Port to 2.5.44
- New filesystems supported: CIFS, AFS

Actually you need to patch a half dozen other places too.
I'll cook up a patch later.

Oops, it's broken if CONFIG_X86_MCE=n
Change arch/i386/kernel/cpu/Makefile line 16 to read
obj-$(CONFIG_X86_MCE) += mcheck/
and it should be ok..

* Trouble with a cmpci soundcard.
From: Nils O. Selåsdal @ 2002-10-27 11:57 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-kernel

Hi,
I have this soundcard:
  Bus 0, device 13, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8338A (rev
16).
      IRQ 5.
      Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=2.Max Lat=24.
      I/O at 0xe400 [0xe4ff].

And using the cmpci driver.
The problem is, mostly the sound is nogood, most sound comes from one
speaker, and it just sounds completly screwd up. Atleast with most
programs shuch as xmms, mplayer, most games. However with mpg123 and
ogg123 it sounds fine.
Now, for the programs which i can set to run in 8 bit modus (e.g.
esd -b, artsd -b 8 ) the sound is also fine. Is this really an 8 bit
soundcard ?
What troubles me is that with a 2.4.2 kernel(at least the one from
Redhat, 7.2 I believe it was ), I didn't have to do anything special,
the sound was always ok. The next kernel I tried was 2.4.5, not ok,
Now running 2.4.20-pre11, same problems here, so I installed ALSA
and with its snd-cmipci driver sound is alwasy fine, so I do think
there is something fishy with the cmpci driver...

Three reasons depending on the actual board/bios.

1. Some boards don't have the APIC stuff properly wired so APIC won't
work. Not something you should ever see on SMP boards
2. The APIC apparently has bugs (eg 440BX) and so interrupts
occasionally "vanish" with it enabled
3. BIOS APIC IRQ routing tables are wrong so the hardware may work but
the actual connections don't match up

hmmm you're talking about a development kernel, don't you ? So why are you
shouting at people who clean up the drivers that one day you'll be happy to use
on production machines ? you participation should have been :

"Hey! andmike and patmans, I inform you that your last changes broke these
drivers: <list of broken drivers>. Here is the patch to fix them : <patch>"

I really don't understand how you may reproach problems to people working on a
development kernel. This is work in progress. Nothing stable, nothing guaranted
to even compile. Perhaps you're too ignorant to understand that and bindly use
every latest kernel on all your production servers, believing it will fix any
unknown bug ?

Or perhaps you were drunk and will apologise today ?

Christoph,
The patch looks good. However ....
The header file "sd.h" is included in quite a few lower level
drivers in lk 2.5.44 (at least 55) and perhaps in a couple of
other subsystems. The reason it is included is for the
"biosparam" call in the API of lower level drivers. Whether
it is still used or useful, I'm not sure. [It does seem
quite unreasonable that lower level drivers need to include
an upper level header.]

You can drop my credit line (shown above) from sd.c . Perhaps
James could make a "credits" file for everyone who has helped
in the 2.5 scsi rework.

To: Andreas Haumer; +Cc: Jeff Garzik, linux-kernel
In-Reply-To: <3DBBBE1B.5050809@xss.co.at>

Hi !

I remember this discussion too, and am also used to symlink mtab to
/proc/mounts. But I also remember some people stating that /proc/mounts doesn't
contain all information (some mount flags, nfs options ...) which may be needed
for a mount -o remount, while mtab contains them.

I too agree that it's non-sense to have both mtab and /proc/mounts. If mounts
isn't usable, why keep it ? At the moment, the only reason why I would abandon
this symlink would be that mounts be removed from /proc entirely ! And I also
agree that mtab shouldn't be under /etc (this is the only file that needs to
be written to). At least, it should be moved to /var/state or something like
that, provided it's available early in the boot stage, but this issue is not a
kernel one anyway.

But at this time, I still think that a symlink to /proc/mounts is the safest
solution in embedded or diskless situations, because even if we cannot update
it for the very first mounts, at least it will be correct when /proc is
mounted.

May be we should just accept this case as a common one, and update tools
(mount, umount, df, ?) to be able to use both mtab and /proc/mounts, and simply
ignore any rootfs entry.

Just my 0.02 euros.

From: Matthias Kleine @ 2002-10-27 11:08 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-smp

Dear kernel developers,

I am using an ASUS CUV4X-D mainboard since the days this
board came out (about beginning of 2001). Right from the
beginning, it was necessary to start the kernel with the "noapic"
option. This is, of course, a limitation of an SMP system, because
there are not all the IRQ's of both CPU's available when booted
"noapic". So I guess it must have some strong technical reason
why this kind of board cannot be used in apic mode. Can anybody
explain me the very reason why this is the case?

I think you own these two gentlemen a great big apology.
Their changes were cleanups and relevant to everyone.

How come you didn't flame Doug Ledford or Jens Axboe
when they broke the build of a few scsi drivers due to
their changes, or anyone else for that matter?

Furthermore, even a 2 second glance by a competent C programmer
can get these driver builds fixed, in fact what you end up needing
to do is deleting the lines the compiler is complaining about.

Again, you owe these people an apology for your childish outburst.

* [LARTC] Can I use sk_buff->cb in Qdisc?
From: jbonf @ 2002-10-27 10:43 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: lartc

Hi everybody,
The situation is that I'm creating a queuing
discipline works similar to prio. There's something I
need to record in each packet, and I wondered that if
I can us the control buffer sk_buff->cb? Though the
comment wrote "It is free to use for every layer.
Please put your private variables there." I'm still
not sure... Please help me to make sure of it, thx.
By the way, thanks werner for helping me last time
:-)
    Bon from TW.

Clean pagecache usually doesn't cause much trouble...

Please send a `vmstat 1' trace which covers the episode.

* Pauses in 2.5.44 (some kind of memory policy change?)
From: Adam J. Richter @ 2002-10-27 10:33 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: akpm, linux-kernel

I run /usr/bin/mail to read my mail box file, which has about
24 megabytes (in 2300 messages, mostly spam). After this, about half
of the time, my keyboard and mouse will intermittently stop responding
for a second or two, maybe one or two times, and then everything
seems to be OK. This happens *after* the mail spool has been read.
This did not happen in previous kernels (well, maybe 2.5.43, I can't
quite be sure about that one).

The mail spool is on NFS, but I suspect the culprit might be
some kind of memory balancing change in 2.5.44.

It's quite a while ago that I worked on assembly level with HPPA so I
might be wrong. But as far as I know most of the HPPA (at least 8200 and
8700) implement static and dynamic branch prediction. Which scheme is
used is controlled on a per page basis with the P-Bit in the ITLB.

With the HP c/c++ compilers you can control this behaviour using the
+O[no]static_prediction flags.

Yep. If it's implemented it has to be on chip.

In this case a branch history table is used which records the results of the
last branches. HPPA uses a three bit shift register (256 entries).
The fetch unit checks this register and predicts the branch according to the
content. eg. if the branch was taken two times before it is predicted that it
will be taken again.

If you are interested in more details I can check tomorrow when I'm back to
office. I should have a paper somewhere which compares static and dynamic
branch prediction on PA2.0.

  hope that helps

* 2.5.44 - constantly need to reexport mount permissions
From: Adam J. Richter @ 2002-10-27 10:15 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: nfs

I know there is more that I can do to track down this problem,
but I've been preoccupied with some other tasks, so I thought I ought
to post a description in case the information is helpful to other
people in shedding light on other problems in the recent NFS updates
which wide use of 2.5.44 may be helping to uncover. Here goes.

I have a file server and two machines that NFS mount its
mail spool and also run autofs to NFS mount its root file system
and all of its subordinate file systems.

Often when I reboot client A, client B get this when it
tries to access the area that it has aotomounted from the server:

call_verify: server accept status: 1
call_verify: server accept status: 1
call_verify: server accept status: 1
RPC: garbage, exit EIO

	The accesses fail with EIO.

Logging into the server and doing "kexportfs -avr" fixes
everything. I believe that the problem also occured in .43, but
that the process doing the "kexportfs -avr" would sometimes hang,
and it would be necessary to reboot the file server.

Anyhow, I hope this report is helpful.

Jeff, this remembers me on some discussion on LKML we had almost
exactly 2 years ago (look for the thread starting with Message-ID
Pine.LNX.4.02.10010251043060.5657-100000@rimbaud.xss.co.at)

Do you remember?

My opinion on this issue is still the same:

- Not only "embedded guys" symlink /etc/mtab to /proc/mounts!
We do this for years now on our diskless workstations, because
here our root-fs (and therefore /etc) is mounted readonly and
so there is no way to update a _regular_ "/etc/mtab" file on
   a running system.

- /etc should contain only static configuration information.
The table of mounted filesystems is not this kind of data.
It's state information and should live somewhere else.

- the table of mounted filesystems is information which
the kernel must have, anyway. Why maintain a separate
   file in userspace?

Comments?

- Andreas
