Well it seems it's not full of information here but it's something I can't
get to make work too.
I was using an intel8x0 and I had problems, now I've got a hda-intel and
still having similar problems.
I can start timidity as player without problem, I can start it as alsa
soft synth but when I use some apps to play with it through virtual port I
got no sound. It's the same with fluidsynth so maybe a problem with
something in new alsalib (can't say how much new)?

Description:
Can`t get timidity woking in "soft synth mode".
======================================================================
----------------------------------------------------------------------
rlrevell - 03-20-06 01:28
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Please give the exact steps to reproduce the bug
----------------------------------------------------------------------
fdoffizi01 - 03-20-06 01:42
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even using timidity:
timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os1l -s 44100
Requested buffer size 2048, fragment size 1024
ALSA pcm 'default' set buffer size 60208, period size 3760 bytes
TiMidity starting in ALSA server mode
Opening sequencer port: 128:0 128:1 128:2 128:3
that creates:
Port Client name Port name
128:0 TiMidity TiMidity port 0
128:1 TiMidity TiMidity port 1
128:2 TiMidity TiMidity port 2
128:3 TiMidity TiMidity port 3
Then when I use aplaymidi, pmidi, kmid to play on one of these 4 ports I
only get this output in timidity:
Requested buffer size 2048, fragment size 1024
ALSA pcm 'default' set buffer size 60208, period size 3760 bytes
top tells me timidity seems working but I can't see nothing nor hear
nothing.
playing timidity namefile.mid works:
timidity AHardDaysNight.mid
Requested buffer size 32768, fragment size 8192
ALSA pcm 'default' set buffer size 60208, period size 3760 bytes
Playing AHardDaysNight.mid
MIDI file: AHardDaysNight.mid
Format: 1 Tracks: 11 Divisions: 384.
Same with fluidsynt and qsynth, I see just a "flash" in qsynth control
panel (when instruments are set up) and then nothing.
Kernel is 2.6.15, alsa drivers are cvs for hda-intel Vaio FE11M support
(but I told I had same problem with intel8x0 on my old notebook with
2.6.15 stable driver&kernel).

fluidsynth -m alsa_seq -a alsa your_soundfont.sf2 foo.mid
this works, I can hear midi notes... suddently fluidsynth get crazy with
noise but this is another problem, the important thing I think it's I get
some sound from it.

Description:
Can`t get timidity woking in "soft synth mode".
======================================================================
----------------------------------------------------------------------
fdoffizi01 - 03-20-06 12:55
----------------------------------------------------------------------
fluidsynth -m alsa_seq -a alsa your_soundfont.sf2 foo.mid
this works, I can hear midi notes... suddently fluidsynth get crazy with
noise but this is another problem, the important thing I think it's I get
some sound from it.

drolyk - 03-20-06 22:19
----------------------------------------------------------------------
fluidsynth works for me:
$ fluidsynth -m alsa_seq -a alsa 8mbgmsfx.sf2 Desktop/MIDI/WALTZ.MID
but, I`ve got sound from too:
$ timidity Desktop/MIDI/WALTZ.MID
My problem is that I can`t got any sound from timidity in soft synth mode.

Same here, direct playing works, soft synth doesn't, for timidity and
fluidsynth. Using pmidi, aplaymidi and kmid... don't know whatevere else
to use to test soft synth but I think it's enough to understand there's
some problem with the way these synth receive data from virtual port that
I think alsa creates for them.

So this is something magic?
ciccio@Vaiolo ~ $ aplaymidi -l
Port Client name Port name
128:0 FLUID Synth (5036) Synth input port (5036:0)
Fluid synth HAS soft synth function and suffer the same exact problems as
timidity when used in this way: player plays but no sound comes out (and
only first few midi (instrument settings I think) commands are received as
I can see from fluidsynth message log).
That's why I think it's not a timidity issue. Is alsa who actually creates
port for these soft synths? May be the problem is there...

Ah OK. I was confused by your use of "soft synth mode", which I
interpreted to mean synthesis vs. just triggering samples, but you are
referring to the ability to receive MIDI input from a sequencer port vs. a
file.
What was the last kernel+ALSA version where this worked?

I'd like to use timidity or fluidsynth as a software synth to hear midi
file from any midi application, rosegarden, kmid... web browser...
I can't say when it stopped working... now I changed pc so I can't even
tell if hw module make difference (but I'm tryin it on different machines
and let you know soon!)

I can't say when it stopped working... now I changed pc so I can't even
tell if hw module make difference (but I'm tryin it on different machines
and let you know soon!)

I did some test with another pc (but with different sound card, sblive)
with older kernel and new (2.6.11 2.6.15) but it worked and it works.
I really don't know what to think.
I tried exactly as Raymond but I get no sound or only the first note
looping. (it depends on midi files I play). It seems as the virtual port
receives the first midi event and then stop working.

There is some difference when using hw:1,0 and default:1
export TIMIDITY_PCM_NAME=hw:1,0
timidity test.mid

How do you build ALSA ? ( ./configure --with-sequencer=yes )
How do you build timidity ?
Do /proc/asound/seq exist ?

Well I configured it with standard ebuild (gentoo user) system.
I have some info. It's not really broken! I can use it by Rosegarden, by
Band in a Box emulated (wine). So it works. But If i play the same midi
files throw amidiplay or kmid, it locks on first events.

This might have been a bug introduced around 1.0.11rc4. 1.0.11-final
should work fine.

If drolyk can load snd-mpu401, your motherboard must has an onboard superio
chip for midi. (most likely PNP is also enabled when there is no extra
option passed to drivers)
