Does this code introduce a data race in PCODE mailbox access during PCI error
recovery?
xe_pcode_probe_early() calls xe_pcode_ready() without locking:

}
The false argument explicitly disables tile->pcode.lock acquisition. However,
at this point in xe_pci_error_slot_reset(), the userspace interfaces like
hwmon sysfs are still registered and accessible.
If a userspace process reads hwmon sysfs limits (e.g., power1_max_interval)
while PCI error recovery is executing, the sysfs read will legitimately
acquire tile->pcode.lock and access PCODE. Meanwhile, this function will
bypass the lock and execute concurrent MMIO accesses to the same PCODE
registers.
Can this lead to hardware state machine corruption and the execution of
malformed commands by the PCODE microcontroller? Hwmon read handlers do not
check the wedged.flag, and sysfs interfaces are not removed until later
when pdev->driver->remove(pdev) is called.

The existing workloads are expected to crash or terminate for an error
that needs SBR to recover, before we reach to this state driver declares
the device as wedged anyways.

Considering that fact PCIe core will make sure that config space is ready post SBR,
but for GT MMIO access we need to wait for the pcode uncore init.

Secondary Bus Reset causes all VRAM state to be lost along with hardware
state. The goal is to keep the device in reset till the teardown is
complete to avoid device accesses such as GuC reset in an unknown state.

Could returning 0 here falsely signal a successful reset to callers?
When a GT reset worker (like do_gt_restart) races with a PCI error handler,
the worker might pass its initial reset checks before the PCI handler sets
the in_reset flag. If the worker then reaches xe_guc_reset() and receives 0
(success) because the device is in reset, it appears to proceed with MMIO
initialization (via xe_uc_load_hw()).
Since the device is disconnected or undergoing a Secondary Bus Reset,
would this lead to unintentional and extensive MMIO accesses, potentially
causing PCIe bus hangs, AER cascades, and multi-second thread hangs in
guc_wait_ucode()? Would returning an error code (like -ENODEV) safely abort
the racing GT reset worker while still being handled gracefully by teardown
paths like guc_fini_hw()?

alan: am i understanding correctly that in order to eliminate any race conditions,
we dont do the xe_device_clear as apret of the xe_pci_error_slot_reset... and thus
the xe_device_is_in_reset() check will always be true until the reprobe?.
Two questions:
1. Im not familiar with the SBR reset and need to understand more about the state transitions
of the GT and GuC before, during and after this reset sequence. Question: how does this
runtime SBR resolve the sudden mismatch of the driver state vs the hw state? if the old
xe-driver instance is just completely freed with no more CPU activity, and the reprobe
generates a new xe-driver instamce, why are we not just using wedged_mode before the SBR?
since "xe_device_is_in_reset" would need to be literred all over the place and we dont
need to duplicate further "points of checking" - just reuse the same places where we
check if we are wedged?
2. why this extra checking in "xe_guc_reset"? i believe most of not all runtime gt/guc reset
paths would catch the wedged-mode or in-reset mode much earlier in call stack before reaching this
point. Are we trying to focus only on eliminating that final mmio register touch? If so, why not
put this insode the mmio read/write wrappers?
