Hi folks,
Having snarfed (and fixed to build) elks from CVS, I've discovered that
bochs doesn't like the elks-images. It calmly informs me that it's not a
bootable disk, whether I put it on a real live floppy or use an image.
Does anyone have any tips or pointers, as I suspect I'm missing a step
on the "make a disk with useful stuff on it" procedure.
Thanks in advance,
Greg.

Thanks Tommy, but that's not an option; I don't have access to a "real"
computer < 80386, hence wanting to use Bochs. However, I can (for the
interest and amusement of everyone reading, no doubt) confirm that it
works just fine on MS Virtual PC 2004... so I better go buy floppy disks
before they get abolished :)
Expect me to ask lots of dumb questions as I get underway with this
stuff.
Greg.

Sadly, not all of us have access to a machine sufficiently under-used to
boot elks on. Since my coding environment consists of a Linux laptop on
which I build, and an XP box on which I do the many things I am required
to do in Windows, I need an emulator of some nature regardless of
processor type.

Your kink is not my kink (and obviously vice versa).
I'm concerned, Tommy, by the impression that you would far rather I gave
up on my interest in this project. Surely it matters not a jot that I'm
booting ELKS on Virtual PC? Or is there a deep philosophical objection
to such an activity, of which I'm not aware?
I'm unfortunately quite content to bicker with you all day about this,
but I'd prefer to do something more productive, like shooting fish in a
barrel with a shotgun.
So, does anyone here know how to persuade the "comb" disk image to load
a custom kernel image? It's not documented as far as Google could see
(though my Google results tend to be erratic at best).
Thanks,
Greg.

Huh? How do you derive this?

Heh. :-) I was just wondering why you couldn't reboot
the PC you are running on. The main "philosophical
objection" I have to Bochs is that it doesn't work.

If no one ever bickered they'red be no ELKS, no Linux,
no email, no Internet, no computers, and no
electricity.

I think you'd have to rebuild the comb image from
scratch to include your own kernel image.
