Hi all,
I've got a au1550 board based largely on the pb1550. The ethernet  
throughput is ~66Mbps using the 2.6 kernel. This also consumes a
lot of cpu cycles to send.

We have older designs using au1000 and mvista 2.4 kernel that achieve  
full line rate throughput without using a lot of the cpu.

Can someone with a pb/db1550 and linux 2.6 do a quick test to verify
that is is not a 2.6 kernel problem, and is a problem with our HW/SW.

If anyone can do the same with a 2.4 kernel too that would be great.

I get low throughput with DB1200 also, although I did not measure
it (yet). I noticed very slow NFS mounted rootfs and I get a lot of:
NFS server not responding, still trying
NFS server O.K.
(Something like that, I do not have the board here right now).

AMD supplies smc9111 driver in smc9111.c/h. Should I use
this driver or is smc9x.c/h better?

Completely different ethernet drivers. The 1550 throughput should be
very good. I haven't noticed any issues with 2.6 on my db1550 but I
haven't run netperf lately. I'll do it when I have a little time.

I put a test into YAMON and I can get full line rate out no problem.

I think this narrows it down to a problem with the kernel or my port
of it.

The actual au1000_eth driver doesn't do much work other than copy a  
packet into cache aligned buffer. It must be more to do with the  
scheduling of sending a new packet. tx_ack.

The kernel I'm using is a snapshot linux-mips CVS of 2.6.11-rc5.
Can anyone tell me if there improvements/fixes to this area since then?

Clem sent me the output of a test. In which he is getting 11MBs
I'm assuming the B is bytes in which case that is as near line rate as
dammit.

Clem you said were using 2.6.11 was that a kernel.org kernel or one
from linux-mips.org?

The source I'm using originated from http://www.linux-mips.org/. It
was checked out from the head of
':pserver:cvs@ftp.linux-mips.org:/home/cvs' on 2005.03.18. At the time
of checkout, the linux-mips tree was missing a 2.6.11 tag. The closest
tag was linux_2_6_11_rc5, but the code is 2.6.11.

Yeah, UDP is running at near line rate, but it does consume a bunch of
CPU. I'm running our 1550s at 492MHz, but I have to run the memory at
123MHz (DDR). I just ran the test again, here's what ttcp said:

Mine was checked out at the latest was 2.6.11 rc3.

That looks ok though (Well it would be good enough for my application).

Yours is using ~30% cpu to send 100Mbps.
Mine is using 100% to send 66Mbps.

I've just checked out and  merged the latest CVS.
There were a few compile problems but I'll iron them out today and see  
if that solves the problem. It is encouraging that someone has this
working though.

i remember that ethernet thruput dropped from nearly 100Mbps to about 
60-70Mbps on our Au1500 based board, when we enabled CONFIG_NONCOHERENT_IO...

Thanks Bruno but I can't find that config option to select.
I did find CONFIG_
Changing from CONFIG_DMA_NONCOHERENT to CONFIG_DMA_COHERENT  make no  
difference, although I can see that if the kernel invalidates the cache
line for each packet on send there would be a performance hit.

Clem can you send me your .config to see if I can figure out why your  
setup works?

It is no longer an option in 2.6.  All Au1xxx processors force
CONFIG_DMA_NONCOHERENT because some cases still
don't work correctly.

It won't, because the Ethernet driver knows the hardware works
correctly for this peripheral and assumes coherent IO.

Any Ethernet performance differences among Au1xxx designs are
likely to be related to processor speed, the memory interface
configuration, or PHY issues (improperly configured or high
error rates).

I would agree but I see 100% throughput using YAMON on the same board.  
So it isn't the PHY or mem interface or processor speed as these are  
all configured from YAMON.

Even if I just send out rubbish packets (no memcpy) in au1000_xmit()
I don't get any better performance.

Basically for 40% of the time the MAC DMA is not busy and TX_ENABLE pin  
is zero.

So for whatever reason the kernel can only send 60Mbps. It is not  
limited by the MAC, it is limited by the speed that data is getting
through the IP stack.

My test just opens a socket and continually calls sendto().

There are no errors on either the MAC or PHY.

Turning preempt on made no difference, maybe a little worse.

I put a scope on the TX enable line and it is high for ~100us and low  
~50us. With the 2.4 kernel on au1000 it is high all the time.

This to me suggest there is some thing wrong in the au1000_eth driver/
interrupt handling/ packet scheduling in 2.6 as it is not keeping the  
DMA buffers full.
